A completely silent Tyrannosaurus Rex chasing down a person would be A LOT more horrifying, actually.
cough Peter Jackson's King Kong cough
Nah
No it wouldn't. Not as a movie. Irl maybe but not in a movie
*re-quote my own comment*
Daniel D. Totally, and if they did that they could have music playing, and the audience could the sounds of stomping as it's running after them.
Wanna know how the real dinosaurs sounded like?
YEE
*REEEEEEEEE*
Ahahahah
Konrad Heinkel this deserves more like dude
Yeat?
I get it.
"What would movie monsters actually sound like?" *talks 4 minutes straight about how dinosaurs should've sounded like in movies*
Isn’t that... the point?
And there were no examples of anything either. It's just like "well, they use sounds that are impressive in movies, rather than anything realistic". What did I learn here? Nothing, really
Golden Spino lol
Exactly
i wanted proper recreated monster sounds from just about any popular movie that features monsters
Am I the only one that noticed the man in the banana suit on the stairs at 3:23? XD
Jan B. dancing too
Or the guy picking his nose
Jan B. 😂🤣😂
Jan B. He knows how to party
He's going places XD
why does their host look 72 and 22 at the same time?
j e b it's her clothes and hair
Dead meme.
j e b she a hippie
j e b
72-hair, somewhat the clothes
22- voice, face
What even is her accent?
"He's a different creature, as far as the movie is concerned."
*insane laugh*
He's the man who was used as a consultant on many films, and yet he has to still explain how wrong much of it is. Lets you know they don't really want to listen to his input but are more interested in getting just enough right to feel justified in their "creative vision." He must spend quite a bit of time slamming his head against nearby objects in response to the idiotic decisions made by directors. I'm sure that insane laugh comes from years of pent up frustrations.
PreposterousWorld Unlike Jack Horner, who loathes in it and rolls with it
At least as time went by
that duck dinosaur sounds like one of the dark ambient albums my washing machine released
Hopkinsville Goblin If I was in the woods and heard that noise. I'd be out of there very quickly
I love how she looks like she's straight from the 80s. Like The Verge traveled back in time to the 80s and brought her back in 2017 so she could discuss about movie monster roars.
hipsters.....they try really hard to look like they're not trying
does King Kong or Godzilla have a better roar
Andru Marino I think King Kong's roar is ok but I like Godzilla better also, question I want to ask you. End of the credits there is more to the movie King Kong is like a god there but why is there a Godzilla painting on the wall there I'm confused about that have any idea why is that.
Justin Estep I think they are going to make a King Kong/Godzilla crossover movie
Andru Marino probably so how would they do that though.
They could do it in ww2 where instead of the US sending bombs to hiroshima and nagasaki they send Kong to Japan and Japan sends Godzilla to combat him.
Andru Marino Godzilla
I like her accent... 'anniemals'
timothyzc dinozars
timothyzc Eemoo's

This girl is so cute and very expressive, I like her.
John Robitnytskyj same bro
John Robitnytskyj right?? and her accent is exquisite!
same lol
is it a girl?
Her name is Alessandra Potenza. She's originally from Rome, Italy.
Here's her Twitter: twitter.com/ale_potenza
and her bio www.alepotenza.com/about/
I like this new girl, she's cool.
I thought the same thing. She needs to host more Verge videos! Love her vibe.
Yeah, she needs to do more videos, come on the verge.
I liked her as well. Very beautiful.
😍😍
The reason why the Tyrannosaurus in JP roar before chasing it's prey is to determine whether there is something to hunt, kinda like a fear tactic. Scaring it would make it run, due to the Rex's vision is based on movement (like some species of frog in Africa) But hey, I still love Rexy even if she's an inaccurate specimen
Glenn Nolasco Fun factdinosaurs eidher made low frequency sounds (like in the vid) but saposably also hissed honked and quacked but.none cares about that :-)
Glenn Nolasco Im not sure if your talking about JP rex but a real rex had excellent vision and it was not based on movement
For a movie that explanation might be enough, but realistically it doesn't really makes sense
Sure, there's lots of organisms with poor vision, but those that can only tell bague shapes or even just light and darkness don't need it for anything else
But an active predator? You could argue that T. rexes could be specialized scavengers, but hyenas and vultures are really specialized scavengers and they have excelent eyesight
But again, movie logic
Glenn Nolasco That would make sense in the movie's logic, but in reality research has shown that T. Rex probably had better eye-sight than even an eagle
Also, it's a reptilian creature who's closest living relatives are avian, which genomes crossed with amphibians. It's been frankensteined to heck and back, and that might've screwed with it's anatomy in small ways (poor eyesight).
I like her weird accent. It's weird but different and kinda cool.
My first bet was Spanish then Italian, and her name (Potenza) suggests Italian. Now I'm pretty sure she's Italian.
Who's judging her?
She's Italian, that is definitively an Italian accent (I'm from Italy, and this is the accents that I hear when somebody speaks English). My guess she's from the north of Italy as myself, and the Italian accents Americans are used to portrait is from the south of Italy (because Italian immigrants were mostly from the south).
Joe Nicholls Exactly. I didn't judge her at all. I am tired of sjw's.
mslockedeye Mmm. Interesting. Thanks for the info :) But I gotta say, the south accent is just hilarious :D
This, and not Kardashians news, is the reason I follow The Verge. Great job.
Why do I love this video? Is it her voice, the originality of the video, seeing someone different...?
This video, although largely accurate, makes too large of generalizations. One counterexample to this video is the domestic cat, which infamously makes chirping noises at some of its target prey, for unknown reasons. Another counterexample is the very high pitched screech of the male elk, despite weighing up to 730 pounds (331 kg).
Manchease Skrelpher not to mention that there are extant avian dinosaurs which are some of the most vocal animals on the planet. Comparing Velociraptors to crocodiles instead of birds was a poor choice.
James C, if you are thinking of Pterosaurs, they are not dinosaurs, they are avian reptiles and we dont know if they where vocal at all since we cant go back and listen, there were half- avian dinosaurs that could glide but they still wouldent scream at their prey
Pterosaurs are only avians in an analogical sense, and they're all extinct. I was talking about the only remaining taxon of dinosaur: Aves. Birds are theropods, like tyrannosaurs, raptors, etc. While it's important to note that it's impossible to determine when exactly the syrinx developed, I'd guess that most theropods, especially the smaller, later ones, had at least an early version which allowed some amount of vocalization. The ability to produce a range of sounds is extremely advantageous for any social animal.
i might have read your comment wrong
So a cheetah, we don’t need to try too hard to sound smart now.
Who is she? I like her
Still no answer
Michael _ Ripley from Alien.
Michael _ But she's actually Alessandra Potenza.
Tali'Zorah nar Rayya vas Normandy
Dillon Cookson Eleven from ST, but older
Is it just me or does she look like Ripley from aliens?
yes, its just you
Anyone else find it strange that Kong walked upright in the new movie?
Enoch Hart Most versions of King Kong walk upright.
Kong walked upright in the original...
Chris Peckford No, humans are the only ones
All of Kong's design choices where intentional.
*@Stranger Happened*
It's science fiction and FANTASY, why are you trying to apply boring and dull reality into it? Reality sucks and there's nothing good from it, so why do we wanna be reminded of it? Have you no sense of imagination, man?
This was a great video! I like the new host, she seems to have done a great job on her first video!
BronzeManul her first video was complete click bait
Her accent is really irritating to me, too.
BronzeManul her voice hurts
BronzeManul she’s hot
What ethnicity/nationality even is her accent?? European or south american I can't tell
Interestingly, one animal *is* known to roar right before pouncing its prey: the tiger. Biologists have discovered that the pitch, power and timbre of the tiger's vocalizations are capable of causing disorientation, dizziness, and shock within a few feet, meaning that the tiger can roar to stun its prey before making the last jump or sprint to subdue its prey. This might account for the not-so-great decision-making skills of people being chased by monsters; the movie monsters could have similar vocal blasts that disorient the humans they're hunting. Or maybe they're just surprised and panicked.
A source would be an awesome read! :D
Wow, I like this girl. :) Cute and cool.
Aleksandre Mzhavia is that the only reason you watched the video?
Why? Are you OFFENDED for no reason? xD
Trap Why does it matter?
Trap Its easier to watch someone with a pleasing face than an unattractive.
Davit Fisher Hello my friend from Georgia, I really like tarhun.
damn right we all like this girl! 😍😍
Roy she is lovely ♡
Roy She's adorable. Those eyes...🤤
Roy all of you guys must be desperate
Anthony I no but you are
Sofia You took the bait
True that most creature are quiet while on the hunt... godzilla doesn't need to hunt... the same nuke that horribly burned mutated and scarred him also changed his stomach into a gland that produces the atomic breath energy
it says movie monsters..instead we get jurrasic park
I like this new girl alot
but what do movie monsters actually sound like tho?
That was actually really interesting, thanks for the video Verge!
She looks like a young grandmother
It's PARA-SAUR-OLO-PHUS not PAR-FOR-OLO-PHUS
But i don't care it was a cool video, and one more thing, the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park are excused in the film universe as not being accurate because the scientists couldn't get complete DNA sequences.
wow keep it up .. need to see a verge version of Vsauce.
aragog in harry potter wasnt actually a tarantula, it looks more like a wolf spider to me
Great journalism Verge
Nice. We needed this to know that Jurassic Park and King Kong are not documentaries.
wait! you've made a dinosaur video and Ross Geller isn't there? that's unfair.
The cuteness. It's distracting.
real title - How to ruin movies
that moment when she says parasauropholus when it's parasaurolophus 3:32
PARA - SAUR - OLO - PHUS!!!!! Why is it so hard for people to say this properly? I don't care about how you say it "AW" versus "OH" but its OLOPHUS NOT OPHOLUS!!! Why do so many "documentaries" (and even real ones) mess this up?? Read the word properly. Professors would eat you alive if you presented this in university.
Why do so many people mix up the "L" and "ph" sound in Parasaurolophus? It's OLOPHUS not OPHOLUS. Why is this such a common error?
Horsedogz because it’s how we all read it as kids and it gets programmed in that way cause it’s easier to say.
Jurassic World mentions this issue when discussing the name of I.Rex.
Parasaurolofos kakakaka
3:24 there's a guy dancing in a banana costume on the stairs in the background
"No predator vocalizes when hunting." Lol k
Tyler Breaux because they don't. That would be dumb
The Wolf of Comedy except for the animals that hunt in groups or use echolocation, which is a lot of them.
Pack predators like wolves do it in order to communicate with one another, but solitary hunters like bears and big cats do not vocalize at all. All you hear from them is the crunching of vegetation and heavy panting.
It's like a hunter shooting at the sky when looking for a deer
Cool video idea. It would have been a lot better if you actually answered the question posed in the title...
It's weird that when the video starts out you don't hear her accent as much and as it goes on you hear it much more
Valentin Wurth yeah that's what I was thinking
I can prove Phil center wrong, in Jurassic parks case the dinosaurs are genetically modified to be what the park visitors want to see, its not supposed to be the real thing
3:33 Parasauropholus..?
Lwf That triggered me
It hurt me
This entire vidro gave me cancer
But that literally killed me.
You can thank the Discovery channel for that mispronunciation. They got the same guy to narrate a few dino vids, and now it's becoming an epidemic.
Lwf - I'm ded XD
They prob sound like those annoying google RUclips ads.
I love this person's accent
The name should be what dinosaurs sound like
Tahmid Ahmed pokemon, that would be pokemon
I agree
Excellent video
Actual quality content from the Verge? It's a little too late for an April Fools joke.
Man. Everything has to be Historically Accurate Nowadays. . . . . .
Jaden West would you rather lie about what really happened?
Maybe. . . . . .
+flysinsoup For the sake of entertainment, yeah, why not? Like that guy said, we're not making documentaries.
It doesn't have to, but then it can't be claimed to be accurate, as many like to do
you are very pretty not in a douchey way.
Velociraptors were only as tall as a medium size dog
But made them the size of Utahraptors
Random Meme they are actually a made up species in the movies called "Velociraptor nublarensis"
And Dr.Wu explained it that they look like this because of the side effects of mixing other animals dna into the embryo
That Keeps Killing You In Titan Mode That one Satyr no they didn't make make a new species ( where did you find that?) They are in cannon called velociraptor antirrhopus which we all know as deinonychus antirrhopus. They aren't Utahraptors
"We need to know what a T-Rex sounded like, better find a chicken!" Why? Because they're the closest, still living, relatives to the T-Rex. The title should've been "what could movie monsters actually sound like?"
It's funny how many comments are about how the reporter sounds with her in my opinion very lovely accent and not the subject matter in hand, by the way her name is Alessandra Potenza
This is a great reportage and are actually something me and my friends have been discussing a lot over the years 😄
But when you are on some
good ol' fox hunt the dogs that Chase the animal barks
that's some high quality content.
By now most of you have probably realized that the question in the title is still glaring us in the face....
What would movie monsters actually sound like?
She looks like she's going to explain 42 genders lol
For theropod dinosaurs, my theory is that instead of chirps and growls, I believe that they chirp, growl, hiss, and roar.
OMG you guys are geniuses. I've always wondered what movie monsters would actually sound like in real life, but thanks to you, I know exactly how these fictional monsters that could never exist or ever have existed sound like. you are so talented. And thanks to you,I now know that dinosaurs didn't roar as they were chasing their prey. They were silent hunters. They used stealth. They probably played a lot of Splinter Cell and Metal Gear in their downtime to hone their stealth skills. Because I've never traveled back in time to 65 million BC, I never knew how or when dinosaurs roared, but now I do. Thanks to your genius intellect. I don't know how I could live and gain knowledge if you weren't around. Thank you soooooo much! !
Dennis Wixom dude she only talked about dinosaurs and didn't explain what ACTUAL movie monsters sound like
Oh wait you were being sarcastic, sorry
My science part of my brain active 200% during movie that's why I hate movies with cartoon logic in it
yoo that girl sounds just like Pewdiepies girlfriend Marzia 😂♥️ i thought Marzia just talked like that but i guess its an accent , it's pretty cool
"What would movie monsters actually sound like?"
Sounds like an alternate life form herself...
Parasaraphalus? No, it's parasaurolophous. At least, that's the pronounciation (I probably misspelled it.)
They'd sound like the scream the guy made on the United Airlines flight
What would movie monsters actually sound like?
Hmmm, you know, I think I'll put one on tonight and find out.
Great, those things sound almost as terrifying as a flock of wild turkeys (which is pretty creepy btw).
Just a quick question, would predators roar at say, maybe intruders invading their territory? or when they're trying to protect their young?
I cant remember what this vid was about and I just watched it. all I can remember is how amazingly cute the girl talking was . WOW
That bit about the tyrannosaurus in Jurassic Park is kinda null. It was already attacking it's quarry, it wasn't sneaking up on the car so its not like it had broken it's cover is it?
Low frequency sound are the most accurate sound we could get but in movie, we are searching for inpress those viewver
Birds are not dino relatives. They are dinosaurs.
Just as we aren't mammal relatives, but mammals.
I think a giant goose crocodile hybrid would be very scary
that is true predators are silent hunters. only thing i know that makes a sound when ambushing or changing is humans. humans have the need to make noise when they charge maybe be give humans more rage power idk.
real fans are early
Jump on their back and kill em
Shadow of the Colossus style
Well the monsters would sound as they do in the movies because, believe it or not they are fictional.
The long neck/dinosaur
Slow motion of a horse mowning for food or water or something
the velociraptor calls in the movie were turtle mating sounds
Ik that godzillas roar is from a big violin
(Correct me if im wrong)
Even lion hunts with its mouth shut. They roar to scare other lion. But yeah that will not translate well in the movie
never noticed that in movies...but from now on surely😒
Well I assume that since the parasaurolophus is in distress it would blow air through its crest with more force resulting in a higher pitch.
Also the guy at the end is wrong about one thing, spiders make noise. Tarantulas hiss, rattle, whistle and even bark in some cases. But again that's only as a threat
That's an Italian accent, I can recognize that anyday...
She looks like Eleven from Stranger Things
Can someone tell me the bird species at 2:24
They would sound like it is wensday my dudes
*This doesn't answer the question*
Dinazours Yeah Right.
the only good thing said about this video is her (the lady in the video)
Listens to weird fart sound nice
3:42 it sounds like a tripod
Am I the only one who thought this girl was a bit annoying?
Tyler Dicostanzo I just said that too lol I said am I the only one who things this girl is annoying so yea I do agree whith you😂😂😂
3:53 omg...THAT'S A REAPER!
Was the raptor in jurassic park debunked to be a dienonycus cause raptors were small
Justin Ferrell oh ok thanks!!
Deinonychus? Huh... I always assumed it was a Utahraptor, due to the size.
mroldnewbie Oh, ok. I didn't think about it like that. Good to know.
2:29 sorry but ostrocheese😐
2:24- You don't say!?
