  • Peak Evernote was roughly a decade ago. Since then, the product has often felt stagnant (or worse), the company churned through executives and business plans, and it seemed like Evernote was slowly turning into a zombie app. Not gone, not even forgotten, just sort of... there. For the third and final installment in our series about productivity and digital life, we sit down with Federico Simionato, the Evernote product lead at Bending Spoons. We talk about the acquisition process, how he perceives Evernote in today’s landscape, what it took to start shipping new stuff again, why Bending Spoons changed the subscription price, and much more.

The core functionality of Evernote has changed. Instead of being the absolute best pure note taking app it’s trying to be a Notion knockoff-but worse. The way it handles text is terrible. The visual design is a giant step backwards with regard to basic layout. Bullet points don’t scale with text size! The one thing it does better than its competitors is tables. If you really want to make Evernote better, allow users to turn off some of the help “features.”

    •  3 дня назад +1

I completely agree. The Evernote legacy editor was the best of all versions. I use font size 18 for all my notes. Why can't I set this as the default?

Evernote last year made it impossible to export all your notes and then dramatically raised their rates. Effectively holding your notes hostage. This is very anti-user. No guarantee they won't continue to raise their prices. Don't trust your notes with this service.

I've been a paid user for over a decade, and I went through the painful transition stage when they first took over and it was almost unusable. I was going to quit, but they made improvements and now I'm quite happy with it. It's still pretty slow on my pixel 8 and PC, but listening here I'm pleasantly optimistic about their intentions. What really got me steamed was all the formatting on 12+ years of software dev notes suddenly going away. That wouldn't be too bad except that the option to disable auto-formatting went away too (e.g. #, ##, and ### turning the line into a header, or "---" turning into horizontal dividers, etc). Not only that, but there's no way to specify a default font anymore either: I would probably pay 1000 bucks to just change the default to Consolas (the default for ALL notes I mean - I know you can do one note, but there's no way to set defaults, or configure multiple notes at once, etc. The ONLY way to get Consolas back on all my source code in Evernote is one.... note.... at.... a.... time. Damn, bra!
IDEA: Why not just give each Notebook a customizable .css file or something? That would be DOPE AF!

For me, Evernote is worth the money because it handles my notes, to-do tasks, and calendar (synched with google calendar) all in one app. The interface is nice and the organization is simple. It definetly helps to hide some of the functinalities I don't need from the side bar. Notion, on the other hand, feels too overwhelming, even with pre-made templates that just do not work as well.

It’s hard not to laugh at Evernote’s policy of "I’ll talk, you listen," where they post hour-long conversations in full, despite the fact that users aren’t really interested. There are shorts that can capture the key points, after all. I’ve been using Evernote for over ten years because I couldn’t migrate countless notes, but I’m ready to leave without any regrets. The slow startup often makes me forget what I was supposed to write, and the issue of letters lagging or disappearing when typing in non-English languages has been unresolved for the past decade.

The same here. I held out as long as I could, too. The thought of having to migrate thousands of notes kept me using Evernote, but it got to the point (bloated, pricing) where I couldn't ignore it anymore. I used Evernote since 2012 and it was the best and my only note taking app. Fast forward to yesterday was the day I had to part ways with Evernote. It has become a slow, too pricey, and limiting the synced devices. Thank God exporting notes and importing to other app was a breeze. Bye Evernote

What made it easy to export your notes? So many others are saying it was difficult. I’m a senior and while not great with exporting tasks, I’m not sure I can do it myself. Any suggestions to make it easier? Thanks

Beginning a productivity podcast with "sorry we're late" is hilarious, thumbs up. Naming one's company "Bending Spoons" after a famous con-man is ... an interesting choice ...

Thank you for your hard work. I am a user who loves Evernote. I have been using Evernote for a long time, and it is increasingly becoming a provider-oriented rather than a user-oriented Evernote. Changing the configuration and evolving is not desirable if it causes a lot of inconvenience to existing users. I use an Android phone and the notification function doesn't sort the most recent notifications in descending order. I requested this, but it hasn't been fixed for a long time. We hope to become a user-centered Evernote.

Everyone has switched from Evernote lol. For those looking for something industry-specific, Immersive Translate now allows you to customize your own AI expert, it also allows translations in the technology field become more accurate and professional.

I’ve got some old notes in Evernote and they use some of the most annoying deceptive UX to try and get me to pay whenever I log in. Definitely not using them going forward.

I’m waiting for Apple Notes and the AI of Apple Intelligence to come to fruition. Probably middle of 2025. Then I’m gonna offload all my Evernote into Apple notes and get rid of my subscription to Evernote.

Being that’s Bending Spoons an AI company I’ve come to realize Federico is not a real person but an AI as is 90% of the staff. Federico’s graphics are incredible on his “Where We Are at Evernote” RUclips videos.
