  • The Potomac river in Washington D.C., just minutes from the Nations Capital, sets the stage for some great fishing for huge blue catfish, as well as other species, in an inexpensive boat rented from Fletcher's Boathouse at Fletcher's Cove along the C. and O. canal.

We have really taken a liking to fishing there. Always seem to catch some good ones. The marbles, on the other hand, may be difficult this year. It's already very wet on the area, and only looking to get wetter as time goes by. Good news is Michael has a big trip planned that should lead to a great fall herping video (fingers crossed)

here's a well-known secret. you can catch those same huge blue cats in the tidal basin in washington dc., without the need of renting a boat and without having to deal with losing so many hooks and sinkers in the swift rocky waters at fletcher's boat house. the tidal basin is shore fishing only and the basin has a mostly mud and gravel bottom. the blue cats are huge and plentiful and you can catch them while sitting in a lawn chair, lol.

That's also a great place to try. We like getting out for a float at Fletchers though, it's closer to home for us. When you're out there in those rowboats, you can get a snag off most of the time by rowing over to it. We've also learned where the spots are where that wont be much of a problem. That takes a little time, but after a while you find the spots that are trouble free.

No, this is right outside the Nations Capital, I'd be really surprised to find a mountain lion near this spot 8^)

Yes, it hasn't changed much at all over the years, still a bunch of fun to go there and spend the day fishing.

what bait did you use for that big boy?

For those blues we use cut bait. We buy what they have at the boathouse, I think it's herring, and we will also use left over bait from surf fishing trips, like squid and shrimp. Not sure exactly what this one took, one of those kind of baits though.
