Use smaller cameras with invisible IR Lights and blend them in with paint on the house and don't paint the lens or the IR Lights you need patience before doing this or it won't come out right!! I use a tiny vehicle back-up camera and it works amazingly well in day or night!!!! Inside the window no IR Lights are needed if your outside lights are super bright enough!! NO NEED TO SPEND over $500 or thousands of dollars to catch thieves these days!!!! It's easy and simple!!!!
Why don't you set up your box below your attic entrance and pull the wires to the edge of the house and tape the wires to the fishtape you stuck through the soffit and pull them through, then backfeed your wires from the attic entrance to wherever you want the DVR. It seems like it would save you a lot of fishing in the soffit. Great video though. Very good explanations and easy to understand
Good question! I try to avoid backfeeding as much as possible on projects since it is hard to get the estimate the wire just right. If I'm even short by 2" the whole run is scrapped and the wire might be wasted. That makes me over estimate everything by 10' so I end up burning a lot of wire.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV 10' of wire is a lot cheaper and quicker than another trip to the attic, not to mention all the unnecessary fishing and need for an extra tool. And if you're worried about wasting cable just pull a pull string from the attic entrance to your recorder, snip it off, and use that to measure how much to backfeed for the cables before you send them over
I have a 2 story house. Is it possible to run cables/wires through the floor between the second floor and first? Or does everything have to go through the attic?
I think it’s easier to cross the house in the attic then drop down the wall on the second floor into the walls of the first floor. I think this will be my next video. You’ll need an in-wall scope though. Hopefully I can make the video in the next few weeks.
I used to have a very small low voltage installation business. We did cable/satellite, speakers, TVs, networks, security cameras, etc. We had PLENTY of work but we also installed several systems. Getting lights into an attic in those hard-to-get-to places is a nightmare so I doubt I'll be able to fix that in a satisfactory way though.
You're probably OK doing that, but it may be cheaper just to run the wires. Also, by using the right wires you'll eliminate another piece of equipment and potential failure point.
I have wood fascia. I drilled a hole to run my cable through and had my wife hold the fish tape in the hole. There was approximately 10ft of fish tape through the hole. When I went up in attic I could see where the fish tape would be but there is a baffle in that spot. Any suggestions to get the tape through? Or drill somewhere with no baffle? Thanks
I agree with 7orres. Using a glow rod will “thump” the obstacle so you’ll have a better idea of where it is and how far it is. Better than that would be to use an in-wall scope to see what is going on. I know most people don’t have one, but it’s a great tool for home repairs so put it on the Christmas list.

it seems to be very backwards as you said. wed o this every day for a living.. at certain points and time it is better to hire a reputable company. if that is not possible always pull from where the recorder will be placed so you only pull once. also make sure they are aware that if the router/modem is in a different location they will have to run more wire to be online, or buy a separate device
I don't remember. Typically I use a 3/8 if I am only running one wire and I know for sure that I will never run another. I use 1/2 when I am running 2 wires and a 3/4-1" depending on the application if I need a bigger hole.
And I bet those boxes of wire are super expensive. I’m debating right now with battery operated or wired. Since my home is much older I’m not sure how well it’ll go through my walls to the attic

They are both 2 TB or is one 2 TB and the other is 2 Gig? I would go with the 2TB if that’s the case. Pic quality will likely be pretty similar. Make sure they’re both offering indoor/outdoor cameras too. Indoor cameras are cheaper and less useful.
Wireless is not good. Batteries go bad and they will go in and out. Save yourself the headache and run the wire. It isnt that bad, to be honest some of the older houses are built better than the pre-fabricated stuff I see today.
POE, is always an option too, Power Over Eithernet, THEN you ONLY need one cable. Also I put wood down EVERYWHERE in my attic, so I can walk everywhere in it. SOME people have recommended ONLY 3 cameras lol, I guess I may have gone WAY over board lol, 3 lol. I watch the road/my drive way, ALL of my fence/gates, all my doors and so on, baisicly I surveillance, ALL of my property, so I have certain cameras that watch certain sections/alert me/notify me. Meaning I have two cameras, in each place, I put cameras. Meaning ONES designed to pick up motion AND the other is designed to continuously record. I have 15 outdoor security cameras, that I use, to view, Most of the time, BUT I have a total of 30 cameras, that are outside, meaning 15 of them are for continuous recording and 15 are for me to see whats going on, without having to go outside/be there, from my phone or a tablet. I don't use night vision, because ONE I don't have to, and TWO, because I don't like it/I prefer 4k/3840x2160p, color vs black and white, SO each place a camera is/in good areas, I have BRIGHT motion lights, SO I never use night vision. I also have a motion sensor, in my mailbox, that when, triggered, it says inside, mail has been delivered, plus I have motion lights/lights that can be turned on and off AND that are triggered by motion, and ALL of my out door lights are really really bright. I also use door armor, its a product, that includes everything you need to protect your doors, I also put these clear plastic sticker type things, on my windows, surprisingly they protect your windows, and they can with stand MULTIPLE/A LOT of hammer/crowbar/pry bar/baseball bat hits, its kind of crazy how durable it makes your windows, I also have door sensors and window sensors. When a window opens, it says on speakers, certain window open/closed. Same with doors, basement door open, garage door open, front door open, back door open, patio door open, certain balcony door open, shed door/window open, bedroom door open, for bedroom, I only have certain speakers sound out, my office/theater room/gaming room, and I get notifications on my phone for ALL of these as well. The open/close notifications/sounds, have a one minute delay, meaning, if you open and close the door a few times in a row, it wont say open close, open close and so on, after a minute has past, it will say open or close again. I also have video door bells, at every door, when they detect motion, speakers inside say, motion at garage, motion on porch, motion at front door, motion at back door, I also have a motion sensor, at the end of my drive way, and when it detects motion, it says, motion at the end of the driveway, also if someone rings the door bell, speakers say, someone's ringing, a certain door bell. All of my lights, fans, garage doors, doors, gates, sprinkler system/lawnmowers and vacuums and so on, are able to be closed/locked/turned on/off, from where ever I'm at, MOST things are on schedules though, meaning my vacuums/lawnmowers/sprinkler system, are ALL on schedules, I can also Manually open my garage doors, for my lawnmowers as well, if im not home, my lights have motion sensors, that either come on or give you dim lighting, depending on the time of day/night. Also I can view on a camera, to see if a doors open, ALSO my phone shows if the lights on or off or the doors open or closed, also sensitive items, I can either view, or look to see if its on or off, sensitive as in, fridge, freezers, curling iron, iron, you get the idea, ALSO lights come on and turn off at certain times, they are also voice controlled/EVERYTHING IS. My vehicles go in my garage, and I don't have windows on my garage doors/all my windows have blinds AND dark out curtains, each window/access point, has a camera over it, as well. I also have vacation mode/I'm able to have outdoor lights come on and off, outdoor/patio/porch/balconies, tvs come on and off at times/music, that are in outdoor areas. Also I don't post on social media, SO thats not a security risk for me, but I DEFINITELY DON'T, post when I'm going out of town on FB/where ever lol. Anyway I feel like security cameras/systems are NEEDED. Lol I don't know about three cameras though lol. For SOME people I guess thats FINE, but EACH of my cameras has a section/area its responsible for AND one of the cameras picks up motion AND the other continuously records, yeah I could just see my whole front/back/sides, with 4 cameras, BUT that wont even include door cameras lol, 3, just wouldn't cut it, MAYBE 6, 7 or 8 cameras, 4 for each side of your house, front back and both sides, then you NEED one for your, front door and back door, so if you have two entry doors, 6 would WORK, if you have a basement door, 7, is needed, ALSO the garage, so thats 8, BUT thats not efficient, ESPECIALLY IF multiple events are happening/it cant pick up everything, plus, the motion cameras have delays, anyway, its just not ideal, BUT it WILL WORK,JUST NOT EFFICIENTLY AND this is why I have 15/30, 15 that I view AND 15 that continuously take video AND this is JUST OUTSIDE. That doesn't include cameras that are in my shed,in my garage,at my safe, for my dog,on my balconies, at door entrances, ANYWAY FOR SOME PEOPLE, THIS MAY WORK, BUT,ITS NOT IDEAL.
Oh. My. Gosh. You are my hero! This is awesome! YOU need to be making videos on your system. I agree that three is not enough. I had a customer build a house and I recommended camera for 360 degree coverage and she didn’t want it. I asked one more time and she said “No. Two or three is enough.” Then she finished the house, we installed the cameras, and she got MAD at me for not insisting she install more cameras. She said “Oh I wish I had more coverage. I’m really annoyed that you weren’t more insistent that I install more.”
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV This MAY also help SOMEONE. If you don't want to spend A LOT, you can get $20 Wyze cams/these ACTUALLY work FINE OUTSIDE, they aren't designed to work outside, BUT in the past, I haven't had a problem with them, I put electric tape on the back of them, where the speaker holes are, AND around the ports, on the back,I also TRY and keep them under eves, AT LEAST slightly, now I use these, if I go out of town/on vacation, I use these/bring a few of these with me, to monitor, where ever I'm at, ANOTHER OPTION is the Kamtron Outdoor 1080p cameras, BUT Wyze ACTUALLY have an outdoor camera too now, I think the Kamrton is slightly better though, compared to the Wyze cams, and my system is the Reolink POE 4k camera system.

The factory provided wires should only be use for holding up vegetables maybe tying a tomato plant maybe walking a very small dog their garbage anything over 100 feet the signal will degrade

That's a clever trick! Did you invent that or did you see it somewhere?
Dude you need more insulation!! Maybe take those cameras back and buy some pink panther.
And if you're worried about wasting cable just pull a pull string from the attic entrance to your recorder, snip it off, and use that to measure how much to backfeed for the cables before you send them over
It was really helpful. 😊
Sweet! I'm glad to help
Liked for professionally delivered Dad Joke
Years of proper training and diet are required to pull off a dad-joke of this quality.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV awesome! I’ll be watching!
Great 👍 video man, Thanks 😊
Thanks for watching
Hi !! I have to ask, do you do this as your business ?? Is there any real Money to be made in it for fulltime work? Thanks in advance
I used to have a very small low voltage installation business. We did cable/satellite, speakers, TVs, networks, security cameras, etc. We had PLENTY of work but we also installed several systems. I would not have been busy just doing cameras but I also didn't push that side of my business as much. Most of my work in cameras was accompanied by home theater work or came from referrals.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV I've actually began my own security systems installations buiseness I'm loving it so far as a side thing brings in quite a bit of money when I was able to work while also having a regular full time tech job.
@@bluestratos1901 Oh SWEET!! Congratulations on running a successful operation! It's a lot of work but feels good to create your own work and success. Best of luck to you!
if you turned on light this could be seen as well as heard
You're right. Getting the lighting right is always a challenge. These are real installations, not a set so it's hard but I'll continue to make an effort to figure it out. Thanks for watching!
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV Thank you for this courteo as wells reply sir. I think I ammaybe more sensitive than many having been a pro in vieo production but I also am now night blind.
@@peytonquinn3095 Getting the lighting right is always a struggle for me. I actually use a lot of light when I shoot, but I always watch the videos back and think "Man! I wish I used more light." Getting lights into an attic in those hard-to-get-to places is a nightmare so I doubt I'll be able to fix that in a satisfactory way though.
The little thought captions for your daughter 🤣
What is your thoughts on using BNC - CAT6 Baluns from cameras to recorder?
You're probably OK doing that, but it may be cheaper just to run the wires. Also, by using the right wires you'll eliminate another piece of equipment and potential failure point.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV Thanks, I appreciate the info.
Thanks
Try with glow fish tape
I agree with 7orres. Using a glow rod will “thump” the obstacle so you’ll have a better idea of where it is and how far it is. Better than that would be to use an in-wall scope to see what is going on. I know most people don’t have one, but it’s a great tool for home repairs so put it on the Christmas list.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV which inwall scope would you recommend?
@@RicardoHernandez-zr1pw I use a Teslong Scope. They're pretty solid and I'm happy with mine. I setup a coupon code with them too. You get 10% off anything you buy from their site. It's "ALANCLEGG_10%OFF"

Loving your last name.
That’s actually how I installed the security cameras on my grandparents house!
Sweet! You didn't even know you were a pro already
it seems to be very backwards as you said. wed o this every day for a living.. at certain points and time it is better to hire a reputable company. if that is not possible always pull from where the recorder will be placed so you only pull once. also make sure they are aware that if the router/modem is in a different location they will have to run more wire to be online, or buy a separate device
Great reminder. Thanks for the comment!
What size drill bit did you use?
I don't remember. Typically I use a 3/8 if I am only running one wire and I know for sure that I will never run another. I use 1/2 when I am running 2 wires and a 3/4-1" depending on the application if I need a bigger hole.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV thank you and great video by the way.
And I bet those boxes of wire are super expensive. I’m debating right now with battery operated or wired. Since my home is much older I’m not sure how well it’ll go through my walls to the attic
Wired. Always always always wired. Wired always work. They never lose signal and they never lose battery. It’s way more work but it’s SO worth.
@@AlanCleggYouDoAV Swann enforcer 16 channel 12 camera wired 4K UHD 4K 2TB FOR $899 or
Lorex 4K 10 wired Cameras with active deterrence-white 2 GIG HD for $899 as well. Wondering what you’d choose if either of them.
Thanks!
@@WentworthCCTV Couldn't agree more! Wireless is easier to install, but a nightmare forever after.
Wish you were my neighbor. Neighbor's 2 acres away. Prowl at 1 am , Drugs too. Police can only do so much without a video. It's 1 person against druggie and their friends. So I'm always trying to fix the cameras better.
@@foxiedogitchypaws7141 Oh man! Sorry to hear that. I can tell you that night camera picture quality is always lower than day. I know that sounds like a no-brainer, but the point is that it would help if you had lights up to assist the cameras with night clarity.
Ya POE definitely the way to go.
I agree. These have been great for what I paid. I have no complaints except I wish I had a little better quality image. These are fine, but I'll move to PoE next time. Luckily, the wires are already pulled so it should be a piece of cake.
Question: Want to buy PTZ for my cabin in the mountains. Cable provider through WIFI, it only has 0.66 upload/download. Is this enough to run a PTZ and view it remotely? If not, would it be better just to go with a fixed wireless camera through DVR system? Thanks!
Oh man. I’m not the right guy for that type of question. A network manager is better a source of information. Sorry!
