Imagine the a7III full frame sensor, AF, low light capabilities and battery life combined with GH5 image stabilization and BMPCC color science, and BRAW codec. That would be the ultimate camera.
bqgin bmpcc 6k is a super 35 sensor, which isn’t full frame, probably the closest thing to what this person is saying the canon c500 but that’s a 16k camera... it has almost everything the c500 has
Personally I see GH5 as a nice compromise between A7III and BMPCC4K. I owned the A7III for a year and was a huge Sony fanboy, but when I started taking my color grading more seriously and using Davinci Resolve, the image just fell apart. All the artifacts were really nasty. Therefore I instantly jumped on the BMPCC4K bandwagon and haven't looked back. I admit it's a pain in the arse taking the BMPCC4K for casual "run and gun" shoots though. Attaching an external monitor to it is an absolute must to use it properly, in my opinion. Oh and another HUGE thing I hated about the A7III was its user interface. It was attrocious. I can't even describe how relieved I felt when I got my hands on the BMPCC4K. The UI on it is absolutely gorgeous and so ridiculously easy to use. I was wasting my life away digging through Sony's confusing menus.
Completely agree. I have a a7r ii which is great for gimbal work. But you are so right when it comes to color grading. It's not even a fair comparison. If you want a good video look then Sony A line is great but if you want to shoot film then BMPCC4K/6K is amazing. And what I don't understand is everybody ends up "rigging" out their cameras anyways so you might as well rig a great cinema camera. Good post!
Hi buddy . I wanna do commercial and wedding and I am between A7iii or A7riii vs bmpcc 4k . let me know what's ur opinion ? and other question can bmpcc 4k jump on Ronin sc ?? thanks in advance
So how exactly would there be be more artifacts (you mean noise?) with a full frame sensor that's 36x24mm than the small Micro Four Thirds sensor (18.96mm x 10mm) the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K sports or even the barely even Super 35mm chip (23.1m x 12.9mm) in the 6K Pro? That doesn't add up. The A7III has a 4.5 times larger sensor!! To put the Blackmagic sensor in perspective, my many years old Sony A-57 mirrorless has a 15.6 x 23.5mm sensor, compared to the Blackmagics at 18.96mm x 10mm. Even the 6K Pro has a smaller sensor than my old A57!! So how could such a small sensor provide better image? I watched a few comparisons, and the Sony looks much crisper details.
@@johnnybrist6699it’s not about the sensor. it’s about the heavy codec compression (h.264 on Sony) that causes artifacts when pushed in grading because there simply isn’t enough data. also it’s 8-bit (12-bit on BRaw in bmpcc) that falls apart on color heavy stuff like sky introducing banding.
GH5+Metabones speedbooster. AF works with my Sigma and Canon lenses. I mainly use manual focus but with the latest update and some focus tweaks, autofocus can be used more or less decent. Depends on shooting conditions etc. Lots of GH5 AF videos in youtube. Mainly use GH5 for efficient codecs and relative small form factor. Also, the price is okay regarding that you don't really need to rig this to get camera working decently. Also, the Ronin-S focus wheel works great and is suprisingly responsive for GH5+speedbooster. Oh... 4k50p is necessary for work that i mainly do.
I have used a GH5 for 18 months filming wildlife in the South Island of New Zealand. From a standing start, (My previous experience having been mainly with a Leica M3, bought new in 1959), I found it baffling, but being a firm believer in 'hands-on' I persisted and evolved my own methods of working. My editing software allowed for the use if AVC-intra, and so I paid the premium which allows me to use it. I abandoned VLog in favour of HLG (BT2020), but currently grade my stuff in BT709, using several LUTs which I have arrived at myself, using '3D LUT-creator' (plus a certain amount of luck). My lenses are hand-picked 'Tamrons', some primes, but mainly zooms from the 1980's; everything manually focussed and used off a tripod. My greatest 'reach' for wildlife video clips, is a Tamron 500mm 'reflex' (mirror), lens, and in good light I am able to add a 2X teleconverter, but that is mainly for windless days. Because I shoot at 50fps, the problem of securing good stills and especially action stills is not a problem, just page through the individual 'intra' frames to find 'peak', or whatever, action. To keep my files compact, I stick to 'Full HD' and only use Super HD (3840 x 2160) for computer graphics, since that downscales very easily to HD. I have found that I may, at my discretion, blow up many shots to 125pc without any sacrifice in quality, subject to the shots having been tack sharp to begin with. I might add that, as future-proofing insurance, my video is archived in the original HLG BT2020, although it is converted to BT709 at present for showing. Ultimately, it is destined for HEVC h265. I have the BMPCC4K, I am very happy with the results, it is super cinematic and shooting Raw is another level, the only issue I have is it is a brick when you attach the cage so it is hard to carry in a trip, but at the same time because of that I need no stabilizers and it still looks very good. I think the Sony is more versatile.
At first I used sony a7s, then I invested money in a7sii, but never satisfied with sony. It was like be with a woman you don’t actually love. she can do all you need and some things she can do even better than the others (like great lowlight), BUT this little important things! but I was very frustrated with bad Ibis, dark screen in 4k mode and its bad quality (it is hard to know what really on focus). SO! I bought GH5 with speedbooster and use it with sigma lenses. and I am so happy with that! footage is much more cinematic. only one issue: color are not so great like canon ones, but... it’s a wonderful camera for run and gun documentary and fashion videography. and I didn’t sell a7sii and use it to shot events and weddings )
Great summary of the cameras. I have all three and I like them for different reason. GH5: Just awesome, great cinematic look, not as good in low light - but I love it! BMPCC4K- just awesome picture quality, esp when shooting raw. Just amazing. But if you set it up properly it's pretty big (Cage, batteries, ssd,...) - best picture quality of the three by far. Sony A7III - I was totally disappointed by the picture quality when I filmed in SLOG - grading is just a pain. That's why I only use it in HLG3 BT.2020 - the results here are pretty good. Great allrounder, great glas und big sensor which is not only good in low light. So ... I'm waiting for the A7IV with more than 100 Mbit/s, 10 Bit 4:2:2 internal and 4K60fps ;)
I own a GH5 & GH5s and as far as I'm concerned... I have it covered. With the new Panasonic 10-25mm f1.7 and the Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 with a 2x converter it's all I need in my bag! I've looked at FF, Sony A7 lll and the Panasonic S1 and I don't see the need for full frame. AF is NOT THAT IMPORTANT as most real FilmMakers know, the GH5's image quality holds up just fine from 1080p to 4K and I love the slow mo in my cameras. I work alot in a rainforest so weather sealing is very important while these other cameras can't touch the GH5's. Although the Blackmagic has great picture quality, it isn't very well built and I would be afraid of breaking it within the first month. When Panasonic comes out with the GH6, we all know it will be greatly improved across the board especially with AF as it already apparent on the S1 series. If I'm going to jump to a new camera (as cost have risen greatly the last gen). then I'll save my money and wait until there are more options in a smaller package at better prices for an 8K camera. Otherwise, I don't see the need. Cheers
I recently spent a ton of time deciding between Pocket cinema and GH5-S. I ended up getting the 5S and I really like it. They both have great image quality and low light, but I can still take photos with 5S. It also feels a lot more solid, whereas Pocket is mostly plastic.
Hi, I am a Sony shooter, two a7iii's and overall I am really really happy. It is a great all-round camera, gives you everything you need in a super-compact body. That being said, I am considering the BMPCC4k/6k for a while/now. Having two systems is a pain in the butt, but I am thinking about keeping one a7iii for occasional photos and gimbal work and I do love the Zeiss batis lineup. So if I am doing more action shots having a light camera on the gimbal with autofocus is a must. But when I see what BM can produce, the colours, the look, the 12-bit ... Recently I started using the HGL on sony and to be honest the dynamic range is amazing. If you expose correctly, you don't need RAW to change the settings in the post and it can also handle solid colour correction without destroying the image. That being said, when I am using 100fps in FHD, the picture can easily fell apart. So you can get super clean 4k 25fps or very average slow-mo. With BM you can get solid 50 fps in 4k/6k now, in 12bit - so here we go. Autofocus can be helpful, but sometimes manual focus is a must as well and that with gimbal and fly by wire lens is pretty much not possible. In the end, it will come down to the skill of a person who is using the camera. And every camera is a trade-off for something. I agree with you and your recommendation. I would do totally the same. For more or less the same reasons. But I am dying to try out the BM so.... hahaha
Sold my bmpcc4k for a GH5s mainly because of red cast issues on bmpcc4k and better low light results With gh5s. Also use the x-t3 for image quality and great autofocus whenever 30 minutes limit not an issue. For outdoor handheld I use the GH5. I mainly work with cine lenses with the gh5 ang gh5s. I do as much photo as I do video so if I could only have one camera, it would be the x-t3. Tried a7iii but did not work for me whether in photo or video.
I think people need to realise that Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is well a "cinema" camera and BM Design has little to interest catering to people's vlogging and casual needs. Its PURELY made for filmmaking, for people who cannot afford a RED or to rent out an ARRI. Complaining about autofocus, bad stills, and stabilisation is not a valid critique of the camera. By this definition, RED and Alexa both would be ranked inferior to Sony A7iii lol.
I'm using a gh5 with a speed booster. Love using this camera. Only missing thing is auto focus. It makes things lot harder when you filming your self alone. Mainly when you are standing in front of the camera. Otherwise low light doesn't bother me much thanks to your tutorials and luts you have provided. ♥️. Looking forward to see the footage comparison and how can you take maximum out of a7iii. Also I saw Canon 1dx has very good auto focus and 4k 60fps. Also colour profiles are always friendly out of the camera. But no Idea how much flexibile when colour grading & adjustments. Thanks jooo for the video. Looking forward to see more!
I use the GH5 because I was already invested in u4:3 lenses, having started many years ago with the GF1. The GH5 never overheats, even in direct sun, unlike the A7III (see Peter Gregg's recent video about that). Perhaps the one reason I'd buy a Sony FF camera is for improved Bokeh which even the best u4:3 lenses cannot give you on the GH5. For example, to get the equivalent bokeh of an F1.4 85mm FF lens on the Sony, you'd need an F0.7 lens on the GH5, which doesn't exist even with a MetaBones adapter.
Shooting with the Sony a7iii and HLG is a great look. I just did a music video with one. BUT, as a primary VIDEOGRAPHER, the BMPCC4k wins hands down. I’m not going to argue RAW at all because everyone isn’t going to use RAW, but the colors, look, and overall ease of editing trumps the a7iii on all points. If you want to take pictures and video, sure the Sony wins. If you have a secondary camera for photo, or have no desire in photos anyway and are primarily a video shooter, get the Blackmagic. It WILL NOT let you down. The only gripe about the BMPCC4k is battery life and that’s solvable with an external power solution. It’s a budget cinema camera versus a hybrid photo/video camera. Cinema wins
I just got an a7 III and have been using the GH5 for a while now at work. I hear you on the color blocking artifacts, but the GH5 8bit footage is a little worse, especially in low-light, where the Sony beats it even with noisy shadows. In fact, I see less banding in the Sony footage vs GH5 footage in 8bit, @ 60p for instance (really the only time I use 8bit on GH5). Of course, 10bit beats both settings, but the Sony color science, though not perfect, seems to approximate gradations in color and tone better than the GH5 8bit codecs, and is even comparable to the 10bit footage most of the time. They're both in the same price range so you inevitably get trade-offs, at least more drastic than comparing much more expensive cameras. I went with the Sony as my personal camera because of the full frame look and low-light capability. I recently shot a wedding with the GH5 and STRUGGLED, even with a speed booster. I had to stick to a 50mm @ f1.4 the entire time during the reception. My other primes were f2.8 and they didn't work at all without using horrible-looking high ISO's. But the Sony even @ f2.8 still looked very clean, with the occasional color artifacts, which I can edit around, and certain LUT's emphasize this less than others. I like how you contextualized this though, it really depends on what you're using it for. Unfortunately at this price range, neither camera will give you everything. Even more expensive cameras become a trade-off because they get bigger and more cumbersome. Like you said, you have to really think realistically about how you'll be using it.
What camera you get really depends on what you're using it for. If I were to shoot weddings, A73 all day with that autofocus speed and and low light performance. I generally shoot talking head videos in a controlled environments so the panasonic would work just fine for that since i dont really need super fast autofocus and low light performance. Same some $$ and the full articulating screen is nice for recording myself.
I shoot Sony a7iii with HLG and it’s amazing. I’ve shot with the Pocket before and it’s nice but lacks features I need and want. Also to properly use it, you need lots of additional equipment. I get that’s what cinema cameras require though. I don’t shoot films. I shoot music videos, travel videos, weddings, promo clips. So I don’t need a cinema camera per se.
I am owning a GH5. If BMP doesnt have suck batter life, I would sold my GH5 for it. But GH5 is still a very good camera for documentary, film and others.
@@AllThingsFilm1 He didn't explain in detail why he recommended the Sony, but it's fairly clear. You can't use the BMPCC4K for run and gun or stills, like his friend wanted to. And the GH5 has a small sensor which makes it inconvenient for low light and stills. I personally love my GH5, but I don't shoot stills except for pleasure, and I mostly work in well lit environments....
I am super happy with my GH5 as it was recommended by a trusted friend who has been a WORLD leader in AI technology and in the filmmaking industry. I am new to filmmaking & photography so I know no difference other than the GH5 is way better than my iPhone XS Max or GoPro 7 Black. Thank you for sharing my friend. Cheers
I shoot with the Sony a7iii, I do weddings, events, cinematic personal movies, along with other content for promotion. The reason I ended up going with that route is due to the ability to do both photography and videography for the price point. Along with constant reviews of the Sony being so capable in low light. The profile settings kind of scare me a bit and I shoot mostly on cine4 style with some adjusted settings but would love to dive into that realm a bit deeper. I’m a huge fan of the GH5 and have used it on multiple shoots. I haven’t had the chance to shoot with the black magic yet. I would love to see your color profile setup for the Sony.
They're all great & very well capable cameras in their own ways, be it sony, panasonic, and especially the blackmagic 4k/6k. People just love being fanboys 😂
I use a GH5 and I like to shoot Short Films, interviews, travel videos and form time to time I also do some photography work what I like the most of this camera is the versatility, but I'm looking forward to buy a bmpcc 4k but I will not sell my gh5. About the low light, yes it's true gh5 it's not great but there are ways to achieve a good quality in low light, in this channel there are videos talking about that, overall I'm really happy with my gh5 with the result.
One of the main reason why I got gh5 is the luts tutorial you provided. Say if you have 2 cameras to choose from (a7iii and gh5), which one would you choose for making travel video/vlog?
Personally neither. You dont have a flip out screen on the sony. But I would lean towards the GH5. I use my GH5 when I do my travel videos and do my vlogging on my Iphone 7. For travel videos, chances you are shooting in a run and gun style and the IS helps.. Check out my Hamburg tips video for examples
I own pretty much all the cameras mentioned here. I don't like any. I'm not trolling either. They all use sony sensors, so even if they use different color sciences, they still don't pop as old film used to pop. If anything, Canon's sensor captures light differently. They are very primitive sensors compared to Sony ones (in terms of all around tech), but the colors are just better. Problem with Canon is that the rest of the camera and software options aren't there for video. So I'm currently stuck.
@@EugeniaLoli Yeah canon sucks on video. But when we step into C series it's necessarily not true. And of course digital ain't same like as film. Celluloid captures light way differently than digital sensor. And if shooting on film wouldn't be soooooo damn expenssiu and complicated, I would shoot on film.
@@HenriT The C series use a different encoder, that's why. Their photo cameras use the old encoder, the one that has changed very little since its introduction in 2009. Which is why that old encoder doesn't scale to 4k either (there's very little difference between 1080p and 4k on h.264 canon photo cameras).
None of negatives you mentioned are correct for A7iii. Go check the colors im getting from it. And we shoot in rain couple of times and camera is doing fine.
I use the GH5 and the Canon EOS R together with the Atomos Ninja V. The canon looks amazing with the ninja, 10-bit 4K 4:2:2 at 700+ Mb/s... As Armando Ferreira put it "its a baby C200". If you can adapt to work with the 1.72x crop then this camera becomes one of the best overall cameras on the market (at this price range). If you have specific needs you may have to look elsewhere obviously. But for the type of jobs that I do that involve people more than anything they look amazing with this camera, flawless AF and the colors look amazing out of camera, even more so when I use log2 with canon cinema and canon LUTs. Very minor adjustments required, yet thanks to the huge megabit rate you can push the colors quite a lot if necessary. Another not so silly advantage of the 4k crop is that you dont need to worry about vignetting. I use the Sigma 14mm F1.8 and 24mm F1.4. Canon 85mm F1.4 IS and 70-200 F2.8 IS II. All I need is something between 35 and 50mm and I'm set. I hope you ever get the chance to try out the EOS R with the Ninja Joo!! Almost forgot, I also have the metabones x0.64 for the GH5...
Rcoo 01 So do you find yourself using eos r more often than gh5? I am thinking about selling my gh5 and buy eos r for professional video and occasional photography and I am kind of afraid jumping ship all the way.
@@AlChered I also do photography and thats another reason why I have the EOS R... Now to answer your question I DO find myself using the R more than the GH5. But I wouldn't go as far as selling the GH5, its an amazing camera, I can get very good slow motion, timelapses. All of which I sometimes require, or sometimes just to get another angle for an interview... Also, the focus pull with the ronin-s works very well the glass that I have (panny 12-35 II and oly 7-14). The EOS R isn't that expensive, you could sell your m43 glass and get an adaptor for the GH5 and the R with tamron/sigma lenses. You get the best of both worlds.
I sold my as7 for the colour issues you mentionned. I bought a GH5 instead, and I am very glad. I use it for interview and documentary purpose. The m4/3 sensor is not a problem for me. I don't shoot at night without adding some light.
I use the GH5, i agree it's not great in low light and most of my shots are static in a workshop (quite dark), so i've started using primes more for the better light gathering. I'm interested in the Sony but my god the cost and having to get more lenses just feels like a HUGE cash sink... I went with the GH5 as it was relativily new (9m) and people were raving about it all over youtube, i didnt really know about cameras and sensor size at the time so i was happy with the GH5 - also if i remmeber correctly there werent many rivals with the flip screen that spins round so i can see myself/see when it runs out of juice :) the flip screen has been very useful.
@@JulianMakes Many people use the Sigma 18-35 1.8 with the speed booster but personally I don't like the speed booster set-up (bulky, heavy, unstable). I would recommend the Meike 16mm T2.2 and the Meike 25mm T2.2 (both cine lenses), great for manual focus, great quality, and fairly inexpensive. For a bit more low light performance the Mitakon 25mm f/0.95 is great. If you need a wider angle too, the Olympus 12mm f/2.0. The price of the GH5 + speed booster = the price of GH5s so if you don't need Ibis and don't use your GH5 for photos, I can only recommend you sell your GH5 and get a GH5s, a game changer for low light and better in other aspects too.
Interesting that you mention weather sealing with the sony. It is weather sealed, i have never had any problems in the rain or heavy snow....especially compared to the bmpcc4k, which has like no sealing at all, all plastic and fan gaps
Disagree with this. You’re telling a filmmaker/videographer to choose the Sony A7 iii over the GH5 and Pocket 4K?! The Sony specs are the worst for video out of the three and it can suffer with overheating. I sold my Sony A7 iii to purchase the GH5 and a Sony a6300 and that would be my advice to any filmmaker in your friends position.
GH5, because I upgraded from a GH4 and I have a lot of M4/3 lenses. I love your color profiles and they've made an impact on my GH5 footage but I'll probably liquidate the camera and lenses in early 2020 and switch to the Sony because of the low light capability and the sensor.
I just bought a Bmpcc 4k. My plan is to use it for making travel documentary style videos for RUclips. I wanted the cinematic look, so I went for the BMPCC after doing some studying. I'm completely new to the game and this is my first video/film camera. However, lately I have been considering switching to the A7iii or gh5 because of the autofocus function, the longer battery life and the fact that they also do still photography. We live on a sailboat and travel on a sailboat so most the material will be shot at sea. In the future I would also be interested in exploring underwater filming, but the underwater housing is quite expensive. I would love to get some input or advice if someone has some! Cheers!
I have GH5 and also I usually work with A7II and A7III . GH5 is great camera with pro features like 10bit and great IBIS. But now I shoot a lot of videos in low light and without scripts (events-can not repeat the scene) and I really love the A7III. Also the footage is nice directly from camera and easy to use. With GH5 and combination with sigma 18-35 it is harder work on events because AF is not good. For videos with actors and scripts I still love the GH5.
I use the GH5 (and GH4 before) with metabones (Nikon lenses). No AF and ok lowlight with the metabones, however, the IBIS, codec, resolution and FPS options are so good and I find it hard for any other camera to be as good as the GH5 as an all rounder. I just bought a Nikon Z6. I’m a Nikon photography shooter (D810), which is not a great video camera (ok to get you out of trouble, but nothing like a mirrorless) and the reason was that I can now use my Nikon glass natively (with the FTZ adapter) and have pretty good AF, in body stabilisation and excellent video and stills. So far I am loving it. But I don’t feel that I can get rid of the GH5 and D810 as the Z6 cannot replace both of them in quality and features. It’s not too bad but isn’t good enough at each aspect to warrant it being the only camera I keep.
Why are you people so harsh on the dislikes ? Not only here, but I see a lot of people disliking on several cameras reviews...Is it your ego that leads to think that you know better than him ? Stop , just stop
For a camera that costs less, than the other 2 and has far superior codecs, I am glad I got the black magic. It a little bit less run and gun than a mirrorless or DSLR, but that can easily be fixed with a few hundred in accessories. I have used the Sony 8 bit footage, and it cannot even hold a candle to the lowest quality black magic (12:1) raw codec. The Sony footage will easily band and artifact where the black magic can be pushed alot harder. You have to expose extremely careful with Sony codec where you don't have to with the black magic. I now use my Sony as a stills or basic video camera. If I am going to make a cinematic video, I will pull out the black magic!
@@thatsreallyamoon After using the Black Magic for a year, I do not think it would be a waste. I use only the 12:1 B Raw now and wholly smokes that stuff wont even band when it is push it hard where my mavic 10 bit footage would band under the same circumstances. Can not say whether the 10 bit Panasonic footage would though as I have never used it. I like how the black magic can internally record full 4k B raw codecs @ 60fps. With an update, it can do 75 fps @ full 4k in all B raw codecs! I use a small ssd drive to record the footage onto. Much better bang for the buck than an expensive high performance ssd card. though
If you are doing run and gun and vlogging mainly, the autofocus, form factor of the gh5 and gh9 along with the internal stabilization will be a great benefit. The 10 bit will be great for RUclips and social media content. From what I understand, to get the full benefits of 4k past 30fps you need an external recorder and those can be pricy. Anyhow, I think the GH5 and GH9 have a price and convenience adavantage, where the black magic is a camera that any aspiring film maker can grow into and it can be used for anything from social media work to high end commercial work. I believe the codec of the black magic will stay relevant for many years as well. The black magic does come with it's drawbacks from very short battery life, mods needed on some gimbals like the ronin s to hold and balance the camera, to lack of autofocus. Again the black magic is not a camera I would recommend for the least costly or most convenient. To me, it is worth the extra hassle for the image quality and flexibility. One camera will suite you better depending on your needs. Hope this helps!
Gh5 with M43 lenses for me, if I had to change now with my budget I will probably buy a GH5S. And if I add a bigger budget maybe a S1H or Z6 with a Ninja V. But for sure I will not go to Sony or Blackmagic. What I really waiting is the Mavic 2 Pro luts, the prototype one didn't work at all for me.
can you explain why not the black magic? I'm really stuck between the G9 and the 4K. On one hand, I really appreciate the full sensor 4K60 on the G9 and the 4K30 10-bit internal, but the BM4K camera just seems to be the ultimate video quality. Yet I cannot shoot in the rain with it like I can the G9/GH5. I can't keep it in my bag and use it around for the day. The IBIS is nuts. The small things keep pulling me towards G9, but somewhere inside I really want to have the full 12-bit RAW for color grading... but maybe i'm not such an advanced video person to ever need that. And let's just not forget; storage with the G9's files will be way way more affordable and manageable than the storage needed to wrangle those video files on the BM4K (rightly so; much more captured data in BM). Tough choices.
gh5 for daylight and superslomos, but color of the soy are better, gh 5 oer panasonic cams have "muddy" colors, and then slog2 is great if you can handle it. also the weight is a pro for sony
Hi Joo Works, recently subbed to your channel and very interested in your workflow color grading luts skills. More impressed with how you deal with all the YT criticism well. Something to be learned here. As for cameras, I have both A73 and GH5. A73: - use mostly for stills, especially low light - ff gives more bokeh as more shallow dof - afters years, lots of lens options, native and 3rd party - great battery - small and light form factor (might be negatives for others but not for my run and gun use) - af is super fast and dead on - price under $2k and even better used on Ebay but actually new (got mine for $1500 with shutter count under 1000) - ibis good enough (not as good as GH5 though) GH5: - mostly video, can shoot 4k in 10-bit 4:2:2 at 400mbs and unlimited recording provides flexibility for different shooting use cases - very good ibis Cons of GH5: - lowlight but I use f1.4 fast prime lenses (Olympus and Pana) and metabooster ultra paired with Sigma and Canon apsc and ff lenses - af, check out Yoda Yeo’s hack to change shuttle angle and get better af, at least for 25 and 30fps videos I know you sell the GH5 luts but do you have the Sony A73 lut now? If so, please send link. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Black magic should make consumer friendly camera with sensor stabilization and continuous autofocus and doesn't require external components to fully use properly. Something like the original BPCC but with Sensor stabilization and continuous autofocus, photo stills capabilities. Black magic can't say "well these are made for professionals only" as to why there is none of these features when you have professionals complaining about the lack of these features!
In 4K 60p you only get 8bit 4:2:0, so you'll still get color blocking artifacts and banding, but it still looks amazing with the right ISO and white balance.
thank you for this video very informative! got my a7iii now but can shoot on weekend finally! got this because of the low light and yes the resolution for my videos compared to the a6000 Im interested of a new look. I gave sony a chance even when if the fujifilm xt3 has the most atmospheric character. Dont ask me why maybe its the "sony technique" i learned and dont wanna learn it again.
I use gh5+speedbooster+sigma f1.8 18-35 or tamron f2.8 24-70, sorry is false that af doesn't work and low light performance is bad, I personally use both of them, low light is superb in sigma at f1.8 (about f1 equiv) iso 1600 at 35 mm depth of field isn't narrow (in a full frame camera I doubt you will be able to use f1.8 to shoot the same way) so you can get people in focus at partys, inside clubs, street and any other documentary style, I use autofocus before start recording in every scene, I won't trust af over my eyes, unless I'm filming myself I don't see the purpose, so I guess depends on user but ditching gh5 for both reasons isn't accurate, maybe if you would explain better why a7iii is a better suit for his style will be more helpful, btw a7iii shots look very nice, good cc process bud
My a7iii gives me a full frame 25 fps coverage and that alone is a win... The compression is awesome... I used to have apsc fuji and ursa cameras but the full frame sensor for video is unmatched.
I love sony's blueish color so I'm trying to imitate the color with using gh5. It's fun to tweeking color curve when using α3 footage cuz it has broaden color information.
I use a a7ii for stills an thinking about a video camara and between black magic and a7iii But concerned about media storage and producing in my computer Is there a huge difrence
Just bought a Sony A7III, but currently have the a6400. Has anyone taken his online course? I'm not the type to pay for online info when there's so many others that do tutorials, however I love how he simplifies and teaches in the demos. Just wanna know if it's worth it. Thanks 😁
was filming with a sony a6000 until today but now im an owner of an 7iii but i dont think u have to upgrade to the iii btw your videos are dope especially the max payne 2 video very zajebis!
I have the GH5 with Panasonic native lenses and some Olympus glass. I bought this camera after a lot of research back in 2017 and purchased it in April of that year. I don't care about the autofocus as I am used to shooting in manual. For me, it's the perfect hybrid camera, shooting stills in RAW and in terms of the size of the sensor, there are many ways around that that give great results and again with low light, you can work around this too. If you are a subscriber to this channel you would have seen from Joonas' videos how to shoot in low light. The V log is good the 4k is great and so is the 422 bit. It can record to the SD cards for almost forever and the battery life is great. PLUS it has a flip screen. (although I do use a 5" monitor) And remember it doesn't get hot! like the sonys. (I was a sony shooter) These are only some of the great benefits you get from this camera and it is still a great buy today. I shoot a lot of TV commercials, corporate, and real estate videos using this camera, kitted out with rigs for audio and monitors. In my opinion, It is a solid workhorse. I have not used or trialled the Sony A7iii so I cannot comment on its performance. Just here to offer my experience from using the GH5. Cheers John
My Videos only Nature- Bird Clips, so GH5 with Metabones XL or Commlite AF with Crop is the best in Manual Focus with all my Canon Lenses. Also use EOS R for Pictures and some Video clips in special situations (Macro + Landscape)
Now I am left confused again. I am wanting to invest into A7III or GH5. Finally made up my mind on A7III and now this video has me confused again LOL. Is it jus me...I think A7III is far more cinematic than GH5...every video shot on A7III professional or not, looks beautiful. I am struggling because of the stabilization and no flip screen.
@@JooWorks amongst all the existing logs, S, F, Film, the GH5's V is the worst in terms of recovering skin tone and grain. then: why would you wanna take photos with a cinema camera? it is NOT a photo camera; taking this in consideration as a minus feature is like judging a crocodile for its ability to fly.
Hey guys I started filming in 2017 I picked up the gh4. I’m considering the black pocket 4K (love the EF mount as a gh4 user) or 6k (because of superior color), or the Sony a7iii. My current problem is that I shoot music video a lot and sometimes the preparation doesn’t allow for me to avoid that uncinametic look that I get more times than not from the GH4. Does anybody have any advice? My fear with the Sony a7 is running into that uncinematic look and being limited to Sony lenses. Help me someone with some solid advice 😩
The Pocket 4K doesn't have a much bigger sensor than the GH5. If you want the absolute best, go with the GH5S. It's sensor is larger than APS-C when speedboosted. If it only had IBIS, it'd be a best seller... I'd buy the a7III if it was cheaper though. Been a Sony fanboy since I was a toddler, but the price turned me away...
Astral'o Pithecus still don’t know why the gh5s gets almost no love. I think the release of the BMPCC4K around the same time had it lost in the shuffle.
@@foxcatcher40 All this hype about RAW, but most people still shoot in compressed Raw nonetheless. Not to mention all the RUclipsrs that still upload in 1080p Those guys from Corridor Crew are really funny. They have a RED camera, top of the line editing PCs, multiple employees and a huge studio, but give no attention whatsoever to lighting, and most of their videos are full of noise :P

Real World Endo why bother choosing that expensive junk eos r and then spend almost $4000 with a ninja v, where you can have it all with bmpcc4k in just $1300? Stop being a fanboy and accept the fact that hybrid canon cameras these days sucks
@@hypeka1531 I need AF otherwise I would agree with you 100%. In that case GH5 would have been enough too, which is better handheld that BMPCC. Oh well.
What is this video about? After enumerating all advantages of the gh5 and the bmpcc4k as a video cam, and after making a list of many negative props for the a7III in that field he's recommending the latter one to a friend? He doesn't seem to like the friend that much. ;) :D
A little request/question: How do you deal with high bitrate footage? I can't even play it smoothly on Premiere, and I don't have the budget to upgrade my PC. I've read about converting to ProRes, but all the videos and articles are doing it on Mac. Is there a way to encode H.264 to ProRes in Windows? With HandBrake maybe?
Get yourself a copy of Davinci Resolve. The free version will enable output up to UHD. Right click on the media pool and select import footage, or drag your footage into the media pool, then simply right click on a shot in your media pool or timeline and select "Generate Optimised Media" and it will run much better. In the project settings cog, bottom right of the Resolve interface you can select many options, one of which is the quality that optimised media is produced in. Give it a try on a couple of shots first before trying to do all your shots at once. It does take some time to render the media on slower machines. Hope this works for you. There are loads of tutorials on RUclips for new users of Resolve. Cheers. Martin.
@@Martinkellydop Thanks a lot :) I've been thinking about switching to Resolve for some time now. I'm tired of Premiere CS6, it lacks too many features. I just hope my Quadro 2000 card can run the software. From what I've read, Premiere is CPU-centric and Resolve is GPU-centric. Unfortunately, my CPU (E5-1620) is superior to my GPU...but they're still both mediocre :P
@@Albanez39 Worth a try though. I've been really impressed with Resolve since I switched from Premier CC. @@Martinkellydop Oh, I'm going to try it for sure. I've got plenty of time, I just demand I can edit and grade with no lags and failures...and I just love the fact that it's free. How do they expect we pay hundreds of dollars every year when we don't earn anything with what we're doing. I'm still a film student and I've only done a couple of small paid projects here and there. Thanks a lot for your input and your dedication to helping others. People like you are so rare nowadays. Take care :)
im so torn between the Sony a7 iii and the bmpcc 4k. so basically im in my first year of film school, and my main interest lays with, yes you guessed it right: film/video. and I love way the bmpcc is made and I love the look it gives BUT I also want to practice more with photography besides just using my phone. I think im going with the Sony just because I want both and I can maybe in a few months get the bmpcc. the one thing that annoys me the most is that something someone said in another Sony a7 iii vid is that the built in stabilizer is pretty bad.. so if anyone knows a camera just as good as the a7iii and in the same price range but with better stabilization LET ME KNOWWW
@@XricheeX Nice! It’s a great camera! I have a GH5 and and a bmpcc 4k and I use them both frequently, for different types of shooting. A friend is selling a used a7iii and I’m contemplating buying it from him, just for times when I really need good autofocus and better photography. All 3 cameras are great and have their strengths!
To this day you still talking about full frame over m43. There are hundreds of compatible lenses out there for you to go with m43 with absolutely no problem at all. In what aspect can the a7iii compare to the others except it is smaller?
GH5 (and GH4 as B Cam )+ Nokton 10.5 or Nokton 25, 80% of the Time. O also use the Leica 15mm f1.7, Sigma 30mm f1.4, Lumix 42.5 f1.7 and the Oly 75mm f1.8. Zoom lenses: Oly 7-14 PRO and the Lumix 12-35 and 35-100 f2.8. For me the GH5 is King!
A1Bokeh - I hear 17.5 is amazing. If I were to buy just one Nokton, I would buy 17.5. But I already have 10.5 and 25 and it doesn't seem necessary anymore to have 17.5. The Leica 15mm f1.7 is excellent and very compact. I recommend!
@@TITAOSTEIN nice! ya i have a mitakon 25 .95 and after using that it has really got me into the cinematic look and feel of lenses.. the 17.5 is def on my list as is the 42.5 .... the leica was but im not as sure but it does seem like an amazing lens just so many to choose from! i just ordered the sigma 18-35 nikon with a speedbooster
A1Bokeh - 17.5 and 15 are very different from each other, but can perform same in different ways. For a cinematic look Nokton is better. But Leica has the virtue of being a great balance between image quality, functions (fstop ring, AF-MF button) and size. Can be used as one of the best lenses for street photography, or for some Drones and also for video. The Sigma is a Dream! But I would tend for the new LumixLeica 10-25 f1.7
@@TITAOSTEIN i do love the cinematic look i will say.. ya that 10-25 price tag tho lol is why i went for the sigma at this point in time...run n gun photography though that 10-25 would probably be pretty great!
Imagine the a7III full frame sensor, AF, low light capabilities and battery life combined with GH5 image stabilization and BMPCC color science, and BRAW codec.
That would be the ultimate camera.
isn't it basically BMPCC 6K?
bqgin bmpcc 6k is a super 35 sensor, which isn’t full frame, probably the closest thing to what this person is saying the canon c500 but that’s a 16k camera... it has almost everything the c500 has
Adrian Loves C500 is still isn't real 4k as far as I know.
that would be amazing
Apparently that’s the a7siii but don’t won’t give it to us🤷🏾♂️
Personally I see GH5 as a nice compromise between A7III and BMPCC4K.
I need to test canon lenses autofocus with the new firmware. Let's see...
@@JooWorks please make a video about this af test :)
"efficient codecs" LOL. H264, the shittest, least flexible, system raping codec in the industry.
The A7 III does have a weather sealing ✌️
I have used a GH5 for 18 months filming wildlife in the South Island of New Zealand. From a standing start, (My previous experience having been mainly with a Leica M3, bought new in 1959), I found it baffling, but being a firm believer in 'hands-on' I persisted and evolved my own methods of working. My editing software allowed for the use if AVC-intra, and so I paid the premium which allows me to use it. I abandoned
VLog in favour of HLG (BT2020), but currently grade my stuff in BT709, using several LUTs which I have arrived at myself, using '3D LUT-creator' (plus a certain amount of luck).

Sony a7iii. I'm a wedding photographer and its low light capabilities have changed what's possible for me
Two words, Speed Boosters
@@MtZionMediaProff glass go down to f1.4, and even if you can fit an f1 lens on it - the af is still a problem
You dont need stabilization with a cage?
I had the same. A shock when opening up the s-log clips on my computer for the first time.
Cheers
Hi so you'd advise to skip the BM 6K for now and go for the 4K as a first video camera?
Hybrid cameras = photovideo
cinema Cameras = film
Thats it, Period!
I recently spent a ton of time deciding between Pocket cinema and GH5-S. I ended up getting the 5S and I really like it. They both have great image quality and low light, but I can still take photos with 5S. It also feels a lot more solid, whereas Pocket is mostly plastic.
I used depend on the job, GH5 and BMPCC4k. GH5 for doc, wedding, event, etc. BMPCC4k for narrative film.
I am starting to love this combination as well. Which gimbal do you pair up your GH5S with ?
This Way Up Travel
I use the Weebill Lab
I think people need to realise that Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is well a "cinema" camera and BM Design has little to interest catering to people's vlogging and casual needs. Its PURELY made for filmmaking, for people who cannot afford a RED or to rent out an ARRI. Complaining about autofocus, bad stills, and stabilisation is not a valid critique of the camera. By this definition, RED and Alexa both would be ranked inferior to Sony A7iii lol.
GH 5 with your LUT pack. Produces great results, very happy
So I don’t need a cinema camera per se.
one901 so for music videos do you recommend aiii better than the Blackmagic ? Is there a software for editing included with a7iii?
David Giles shoot with whatever you have
I sold the GH5 for Blackmagic. Image quality matters first even if Blackmagic has a lot of defaults.
I did the same. I sold my GH5 for the BMPCC4K. I can't take this video seriously. I'm unsubbing.
i did the same man just kept those 4/3 lenses and sold my gh5
I am owning a GH5. If BMP doesnt have suck batter life, I would sold my GH5 for it. But GH5 is still a very good camera for documentary, film and others.
I did the exact same! Sold my GH5s for the BMPCC4k and I’m already saving up for the 6k
If I need AF, then sony.
Didn't explain what was the method neither here or in his f***** website!!!
G85 w/25mm 1.7 and 42.5mm 1.7 - why because I have limited funds and the G85 seemed to be the best hybrid (video/photo) I could afford.
G85 is a very good camera for it's price, i love mine
Love my g85
Image quality for cinema BMPCC4K hands down
Listen fanboI, mavo beats the shit out of that plastic voodoo toy.
@@EugeniaLoli Panasonic using Sony sensor... that is new to me, and I think also to Panasonic :-)
None of negatives you mentioned are correct for A7iii. Go check the colors im getting from it. And we shoot in rain couple of times and camera is doing fine.
Nice, now you have Panasonic and Sony! Looking forward to Canon 😍
Rcoo 01 thanks for the answer ✊🏻
I sold my as7 for the colour issues you mentionned.
I bought a GH5 instead, and I am very glad. I use it for interview and documentary purpose.
The m4/3 sensor is not a problem for me. I don't shoot at night without adding some light.
Yes, with good light, the sensor is no issue.
@@JooWorks anyway, keep doing your videos. Your experience and point of view are giving me new perspectives.
Have you tried the gh5s, no ibis but great in low light
@@ludo1632 ahh no i've not tried one. i'm tempted to try the speed booster. which lenses (make) would be a good option to research?
Ludovic Jolivet thank you so much!
GH5s and a gimbal. Best combo.
what do you mean by liquidate it, selling on ebay?
Cheers!
what did you shoot this actual video with? its super sharp!!!!
Thank you very much for honest review.
I'm using Sony Z90t. For me, that's the real video camera.
It's a 1 inch sensor with fixed f2.8 - f4, 29-135mm lens.
Hey man, do you think it'd be a waste to get the BMP4K to shoot only 12:1 raw vs. getting the G9 (or GH5, G9 is just cheaper).
I wonder how is the gh6 gona be. :-)
I need to redo the mavic 2 pro luts for sure.
can you explain why not the black magic?
A73:
- use mostly for stills, especially low light
- ff gives more bokeh as more shallow dof
- afters years, lots of lens options, native and 3rd party
- great battery
- small and light form factor (might be negatives for others but not for my run and gun use)
- af is super fast and dead on
- price under $2k and even better used on Ebay but actually new (got mine for $1500 with shutter count under 1000)
- ibis good enough (not as good as GH5 though)
GH5:
- mostly video, can shoot 4k in 10-bit 4:2:2 at 400mbs and unlimited recording provides flexibility for different shooting use cases
- very good ibis
Cons of GH5:
- lowlight but I use f1.4 fast prime lenses (Olympus and Pana) and metabooster ultra paired with Sigma and Canon apsc and ff lenses
- af, check out Yoda Yeo’s hack to change shuttle angle and get better af, at least for 25 and 30fps videos
I know you sell the GH5 luts but do you have the Sony A73 lut now? If so, please send link.
Thanks and keep up the good work!
Black magic should make consumer friendly camera with sensor stabilization and continuous autofocus and doesn't require external components to fully use properly.
Something like the original BPCC but with Sensor stabilization and continuous autofocus, photo stills capabilities. Black magic can't say "well these are made for professionals only" as to why there is none of these features when you have professionals complaining about the lack of these features!
3:25 that scare me
GH5 is the most underrated camera, 4k 60 10bit 4:2:2. There are still other cameras out that aren't capable of that *cough* Canon *cough*
In 4K 60p you only get 8bit 4:2:0, so you'll still get color blocking artifacts and banding, but it still looks amazing with the right ISO and white balance.

Any built in stabilization with the A7iii?
thank you for this video very informative!
got my a7iii now but can shoot on weekend finally!
got this because of the low light and yes the resolution for my videos compared to the a6000
Im interested of a new look.
Manufacturers need to combine all 3 and make the perfect camera. IBIS, Raw, 10 bit, V log, stills, etc.

Kenny Erawan Tjahyadi Dammit you're right.
And I forgot to mention... I use your base LUT from your color kit for my GH5s vlog and it works great for me! Thank you!
I use sony a6500, small, high dynamic range, great 4K, good AF, stabilization and when you learn how to expose Slog, it's perfect.
I use a a7ii for stills an thinking about a video camara and between black magic and a7iii
But concerned about media storage and producing in my computer
Is there a huge difrence
I wouldn't put the bmpcc4k in the same category as the a7iii and Gh5...

I'd recommend Sony a7iii or canon 80d etc if you're just starting out

i go with bmpcc4k. I have no interest in 8 bit , blur 120p, no 4k60fps and weak 100mbps codec.
This applies to the GH5s, too?
Are you sure you over exposed properly on when shooting log on the a73? I had a way better experience with it.
The DR is low on s-log in 8bit. Over exposure will help with noise, but if you want to work with shadows the noise is rigth there. :)
Cheers John

I'm using GH5S with A7 III mostly on weddings. With vlog and slog2 i can get same colors.
I use a7III cause I'm 50/50 photographer and filmmaker and this camera lets me do both on one body. I don't like the video colors though
Very very helpful!
Gh5 - I knew I would be filming myself a lot - flip out screen makes this a sweet small, do-it-all package - also dual IBIS is amazing.
The sony is better because you found workarounds.. which you wont discuss here?
Now I am left confused again. I am wanting to invest into A7III or GH5. Finally made up my mind on A7III and now this video has me confused again LOL. Is it jus me...I think A7III is far more cinematic than GH5...every video shot on A7III professional or not, looks beautiful. I am struggling because of the stabilization and no flip screen.
hlg3 and slog are actually very good profiles :)

What about the A7r iii and A7r IV for video only?
Hope the Sigma fp will be a worthy follow up to the gh5 (which hold up till 2021 no doubt)

Cheers. Martin.

im so torn between the Sony a7 iii and the bmpcc 4k. so basically im in my first year of film school, and my main interest lays with, yes you guessed it right: film/video. and I love way the bmpcc is made and I love the look it gives BUT I also want to practice more with photography besides just using my phone.
Sounds like the GH5 is the best fit for you.
@@carriestarscapemedia I ended up going with the sony a7 iii :)
I do like the gh5 better in general. I would not use gh5 without a speedbooster and with that, it has no autofocus... Well a good one.
Oh have I? I have been using m43 all along. You might be mixing me with someone else.
Any plans to get the 17.5 voit?
And how do you like the Leica 15mm ? I had the sigma 30 kind of miss it. But I just ordered a sig 18-35
