I went out yesterday and got skunked. I was throwing crankbaits and jigs mostly. I definitely agree that the billed crankbaits do better in warmer water. And, for whatever it's worth, you are absolutely correct when you say that everything (all materials) contracts when it gets colder and everything expands when it gets warmer. Sometimes it's a minute effect, sometimes it's more noticeable, but you're totally right. 👍🇺🇸
Bill crankbaits in red crawl pattern are dynamite on smallmouth. DT6, DT 4 by Rapala are great. Haven't had any luck catching largemouth in winter so I concentrate on smallmouth and it's game on. Joe
Awesome video!!! Never new about how the soft stick bait hardens in cold water but makes sense. Nice tip on the crankbait as well. Stay Safe & God Bless!!! 🤠👍
Totally agree but, I go further. I think I might have one crank bait in my bag. They just aren't part of my attempt to catch fish regardless of the time of year. I just don't have the patience to clean grass off of treble hooks most casts. A bait everyone else seems to love but I struggle with is a jerk bait. I used to do well with them and something changed. Now, I hardly waste my time with them and have several in my bag for anyone interested. Another is the Shad Rap. Yes, I've caught a few on it but, again, my place isn't deeper than 8 feet so, I just end up pulling grass off of treble hooks all day. Bank fishing with these lures is a disadvantage also, I believe.
The only worm I catch alot of bass on is a centipede or a zoom fish doctor they both are great baits in cold water have used them for years in sand quarries in NJ
Yep,, how I see thing is that the original senko is great on all water conditions , who had gone fishing and got sunk “ we all do” we all coLove your idea 🐟on,
Basically all I used is the senko “90%” and small swim. Swim Baits in spring, but it’s funny I have high end gear just too utilize those two beats affectively. 🐟on PS I have lots of crank baits etc, all JDM tackle mostly. 🐟on
I use crankbaits in the winter. They can be very productive in the right situations. However, they are more situational for me and I far prefer lipless in situations where I would use a crankbait. I will weight my crankbaits to keep them more suspended and prefer a small 2-2.25 inch size when the water is very cold, right after ice-out.
Personally, I identify as an expert in the field of "lures that wouldn't even catch a cold in the middle of winter". Keep doing what you're doing, brother. I kinda miss the "featured comment" part of your intro. Don't bring it back just on my account, though, you just keep slinging the great advice and tips. 👍🇺🇸
I had quite a few viewers complaining I was just using the featured comment as a way to pad run time and I could see a lot of people were just skipping past it. I really liked it as it was a great way for me to interact with viewers. If I get a chance to bring it back, I probably will.
What's a winter lure that everyone else likes, but you struggle with?

Thanks so much! I'm happy you enjoyed the video!
Ray Scott Ha! I wonder if the younger guys will get that. Great video, LB!
Modern anglers owe a lot to what he did!
That is such a good way to put it. That strike radius gets so much smaller. Some of the fish seem like they are swimming in jello!
That strike radius not only gets tiny, but the "avoid Lowbrow's lures" radius seems to have grown very large!
@ lol. I totally understand that too.
Thanks for the video

It's hard to want to fish with something that just seems like a pain to use. I get that.

It's great that you've found some lures that work well in cold water for you!
Was gonna get out and try some this evening. We'll how these new minners I got do.
Small, minnow-style baits can work great in cold water.
I never use cranks or plugs in the winter. A ned rig does good, but like you said, I think that's more because it's small and looks tasty.
Keeping things small can really help in cold water!

Weighting your crankbaits and allowing them to suspend is a great way to get bites!
Makes sense plastic lures get stiff in cold water. I thought my wacky rigs were just rigged wrong but they keep tipping to one side and going down.
Stickbaits can get very stiff when the water gets cold. It really does have an impact on the action.
I know the dropshot bite has just fallen off a cliff the last few weeks. I've switched to strolling and damiki rigs. Getting more bites with you hose.
Those are good choices for when the dropshot bite slows down!
Went out 2 days ago and caught 2 from the bank on bitsy bugs with no trailer.
Awesome! That's a great way to catch fish!
