Harumi is kinda right about the ninja sucking at their jobs. They always keeping losing to the bad guys until the last possible moment:
i)They were unable to stop the Serpentine from unleashing the Great Devourer and let it get to Ninjago city
ii) They were unable to stop the battle between the Green Ninja and the Overlord from happening and let him get to Ninjago city
iii) They were unable to stop the Overlord from becoming the Golden Master
iv) They were unable to stop Master Chen and his followers from becoming Anacondrai and making the transformation permanent.
v) They were unable to stop Morro from unleashing the Preeminent into Ninjago
vi) They were unable to stop Nadhakan from marrying Nya and becoming all-powerful.

Just think about the implications of the flashback. I always had a head canon that somewhere in Ninjago during the finale of season 2 some people did not get infected and that they were killed or had to kill their loved ones.
