I was lucky to have acted under the direction of Alkazi in 1970, though I was not from NSD. He saw me in a play and chose me for an important role in the play, Hiroshima. He always tried to know the psyche of his actors. He was meticulous in various aspects of the theatre, like sets, costume, lighting background music. Meticulous to the most minor detail.
स्मृति और विस्मृति के बीच झूलना ... पूरे साक्षात्कार के दौरान अल्काजी साहब इसी स्थिति में रहे ...गजब का धैर्य और कौशल है इरफान साहब में ...Another successful interview 🌺🌺
Outstanding a personality who expresses himself on the theatre with charm and simplicity. This master interview brings me back to 1975 as Ibrahim Alkazi talked to me about his seminal work « Godot ke intezar mein », a work staged a couple of decades later in Srinagar by a friend of mine. Ibrahim Alkazi has welcomed me to the School of Drama with the play I had brought on a tour to India with my young actors from Québec, CA. He gave me the opportunity to interact with his students after the performance at the then studio theatre of the School. On the next morning, he introduced me to one of his classes where theatre students used to practise well-known Kathakali eye exercises (unknown to me at the time). He told me : « If you want to know about Kathakali you should go to the Kerala Kalamandalam ,» which I did, and where I am still at work as of now. Great interview with a man of culture and practice.
It's jarring to hear artists who have made their claim to fame on Hindi arts platform choose not to respond in Hindi. He was able to speak in Hindi, clearly, but chose not to. And Mr. Elkazi didn't remember what was the office of Pandit Nehru? (someone from out of frame said he was the PM). Really?? And he doesn't remember a single student who graduated from NSD? Mr. Irfan said some names, then he said yes he was great. He doesn't remember a memorable drama he has seen recently, although there "are many". The masses do not engage with theater is "their problem". On future of Indian theater, he can't come up with a single individual or style or creation of note. So, he's basically saying, Indian theater started and ended with Elkazi! Wow!!! Hats off to Mr. Irfan, though for shining this light, and asking relevant questions.
He is suffering from memory loss as he is aging you idiot! Rather than writing such a long para, you could have researched a little. His many students mentioned this in other Guftagoo interviews.
