One of my favorite bands. I knew them back in ’66 and ‘67 when they were The Pidgeons. They were one of many Rascals-type, Hammond organ cover bands that played around Long Island in those days. I first met them on a WMCA Good Guys tour in ‘66 that my band, The Spindrift, were on. Among other things they did was an amazing cover of The Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’”. Mark just nailed Steve Winwood’s organ sound and vocal. Vinnie played cowbell as there is no very audible guitar part on that tune. I was duly impressed and went backstage to meet them. They were very nice guys and so sincere about the music, I knew they would be stars. My band had gone on before them and Vinnie asked me about a particular Indian Raga-sounding riff I had played during our set. I showed him a few of the ones I knew. He was very attentive and thanked me. Later, when I heard “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” and the rest of the first album I heard Vinnie playing all kinds of those Indian-flavored riffs and I smiled. I wonder if he remembers our meeting and me showing him that stuff. Of course, they went on to re-define Rock and Roll and heavily influenced so many bands like Yes, Joe Cocker and the Grease Band, Deep Purple, etc. The first time I saw them as Vanilla Fudge they did a single song, “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” during The Vagrant’s (Leslie Wests’ first band) set at the Action House in Island Park. This was just before their first album was released. They didn’t even have their own instruments with them, they used Leslie’s guitar, his brother Larry’s new Gibson EB-2 hollow-body bass and the Vagrant’s Hammond B-3. They completely blew me and therest of the room away and went on to blow countless rooms away over the years. They become the legend they justly deserved to be. .I
If you are a Facebook user, you will find Pete Bremy, Vince Martell, Mark Stein and Carmine Appice all there if you search for them. I'm not sure about Tim Bogert though. Thank-you for your comment!
Saw them in Newport, RI around the same time period as The Pigeons as well when Tim Bogert was with them. Strange that they still say that organ and lead vocals are done by Mark Stein. The Mark of the 60’s had short thin hair and a thinner beard. This guy has either very curly hair or a very bad wig. Doubt very strongly if it’s actually Mark Stein. I was 16-17 at the time and am now 73. They all had to be in their late 20’s-early 30’s then.
When I was 8 years old my older brothers band played this music. I was hooked, have been ever since. BBA too. Carmen and the guys are great, wish they could go on forever, the music will.
Loved these guys back in the late 60’s and saw them at MSG. Wanted to be there but hope to see them in 2019. They still put their heart and soul into their performance.
This is probably the coolest thing to ever happen in Bayonne. The fact that I used to hang out at that music store as a kid. The fact that I had every Christmas on 45th St.
Walki In The Sand,. Hey Girl, and Watchtower hit me hard, but Jamerson on bass on SHOTGUN, All Along The Watchtower, and red leb and Hanging On took me to my knees, and I Want To Hold Your Hand took me to the canvas. Thank you very much guys!!!
So awesome! seen them in Portland Oregon back in 74 my band was on the road too and I was in shock to see my Drum Hero but let alone he will never know that in 2019 I would get to see him here! but its better then nothing! such a great band!!
When their first album came out in I think 1967 I bought it on 8 track tape with my allowance I still have it along with a bunch of other 8 tracks I bought back in the sixties. They won’t play anymore but it’s my nostalgia.Great band.
Wow! c'mon now. only the Beatles had 4 Masters tht could both play AND sing harmony like you just did. Your guitarist especially and bass deserve world class recognition TOO!!! Amazing, amazing
Saw them recently at the Odeum Theatre in East Greenwich RI. A great small venue. Felt like a private concert. They talked about Dorians in Newport back then. Just like the Newport group the Cowsills they continue to play great music and enjoying it as we do. Saw them last in 1967 at Lincoln Park in Dartmouth MA. They amazingly sound the same. Pete Brent on bass guitar very talented similar to Tim Bogert. Very tight group musically. Happy to see them playing and being with their fans. They made lots of us happy in the past and were a big part of our love for music then and even now. Thanks guys! Much appreciated.
You couldn't be more right/correct, Carmine & his brother vinnie are the last of the top 5 drummers of all time. What he can do with a 4 piece drum set is amazing !!!
Carmine is a true Pioneer who paved the way for many, many hard rock and heavy metal drummers, so many things he invented were borrowed from everyone later on. His performance of You Keep Me Hanging On on The Ed Sullivan Show is one of the very best drum performances ever! Most people probably don't know that John Bonham patterned his style after Carmine, one of the very best drummers ever for sure!
This concert looks like it took place on Broadway right by Piero’s Music Store in beautiful Bayonne, NJ. You can spot Manny’s Liquor Store to Mark Stein’s right in the video. Yes, Bayonne, the hometown of Vanilla Fudge’s Mark Stein, beautiful Sandra Dee, Rocky inspiration Chuck Wepner, actor Brian Keith and my fellow Marist High School alumnus, author George R.R. Martin. Long live Buon Appetito’s Italian Restaurant on 908 Broadway, just a couple blocks south of the legendary Piero’s Music!
@@mikea7678 I guess you have not met many rock drummer, I have. Right now Carmine is the Premier Drummer on the planet. I have met several of top drummers and the first name out of their mouth is Appice. You can vote your own but the best of the best is Appice.
@geraldroraback - what a quote “almost all drummers”. That tells me that you had a spliff or two and just wanted to type something. Thanks for not using the phrase “criminally underrated band”. Why can’t we just sit back and enjoy the music. RIP Tim
Somehow I never really got turned on to VF as a kid. Older siblings were not quite old enough to pass this scene down to their baby brother. Recent dive back into psychedelia and being a late bloomer as a rock drummer led me to the older bits to find John Bonham's influences by Carmine Appice. I knew of Vinny from my own misspent youth as the drummer for Dio and Sabbath but damn, those ROOTS RUN DEEP. So many Bonzo licks and fills straight out of this dudes kit. Very apparent during sound check. Glad this is live cause nearly every video from their past is horribly mimed. But the "kids" ate that shit up back then. (I only say "horrible" because I wanted a drum lesson! This works. lol)

They performed at the reopening of the local music store in a town that band members grew up in. Not exactly a badly booked gig at a mall as much as paying homage to your boyhood community.

Carimine still one of the top 10 drummers in the world I think. They still sound great.
