  • I asked ChatGPT to resolve the age-old dilemma - Which is better - Windows, Linux or macOS?
After a lot of back and forth, the chatbot identified six main pillars of an operating system, assigned a best option for each of the pillars, acknowledged that a score list based on its own assessment could be created, and finally confirmed a clear winner under the set circumstances.

Exactly what I thought. I love linux and use it quite a bit but see myself coming back to Windows for many daily client side tasks. This happens almost exclusively because of the compatibility point. Most hardware and software manufacturers seem to prefer supporting WIndows. I assume that's mostly because of the perceived return on investment being short term target audience per integration effort. I hope this will change since Linux is more open, modular and in my eyes has a big advantage in basic funcationality like filesystems, networking, ... Let's see.

@@FloatSamplesBharathG100 The only reason Windows is considered "good" is because software, hardware, and games support it far more widely than both Linux and MacOS.
And the reason why it's more popular in the first place is because they manipulate manufacturers. they provide a HUGE discount for windows licenses, but only if you don't ship devices with competing operating systems too much. This strategy is used by Intel too, actually.
20 years ago, Microsoft was TERRIFIED at the idea of a competing operating system, that is free and does everything Windows does and is open source and runs on anything and is better, existing. They have secretly funded lawsuits, they've spread misinformation, they've created fear both for manufacturers and users, and generally they've succeeded at making their inferior operating system successful still.
This is why Linux doesn't have a lot of market share. This is why software does not support Linux as well as it supports Windows. This is why Microsoft offers Office for every platform EXCEPT linux. This is why you will never find a computer running Linux on your hardware store, and you're a hundred times more likely to see a computer with no OS within than a computer with Linux preinstalled. This is why almost every big corporation has basically a deal with Microsoft not to support Linux.
If more people used Linux, more developers would contribute to it as well also, so in a timeline where Microsoft failed their censorship campaign and Linux replaced Windows, user experience on Linux would be much better as well..
But alas, continue support the OS you prefer that definitely has effort put into and definitely is not an ancient floppy disk era trashpile with a modern skin put on top and definitely has care and effort put into lmao (stop sympathizing Microsoft, they are not your friend)

The problem with using a language model AI like GPT is that it's really based off of scraped data from the Internet.
It's not really so much an AI coming up with a genuine opinion, but just a machine trying to predict the next word based on the context or the prompt it was given.
What ChatGPT says isn't cold and calculating, but subject to the opinions of real people it was fed data from.
Therefore we can't rely on chatgpt to give us any interesting or unique answers, it's all regurgitations of things previously said.

    • @covoeus
      @covoeus Год назад +26

It's wisdom of the crowd but personified.
Arguments can be made that asking everyone in a large enough group the same, objective question, then averaging the answer usually yields correct or close to correct results, which is basically what OpenAI has done for every possible question by scraping the whole internet. This is why ChatGPT keeps reiterating that it can only provide information, not opinion. The information it provides is more often than not the collective opinion of every internet user, which it then regards as fact.
UnuAI was an interesting experiment in this field about a decade ago, in which a group of random people would answer questions by weighing down an online scale, with the added twist that they could change their answer based on the current average answer. The group usually converged on a demonstrably correct answer, even if nobody was an expert on the given subject.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about language model AI like GPT, but I must respectfully disagree. While it is true that GPT is trained on vast amounts of text data scraped from the Internet, it is also important to understand that this data comes from the opinions and insights of countless real people.
The ability of GPT to generate responses that sound natural and coherent is a testament to the quality and diversity of the data it was trained on. And while GPT is not capable of forming opinions or emotions like a human, it is able to generate unique and interesting responses to prompts it has never seen before.
In fact, one of the most exciting aspects of language model AI like GPT is its potential to provide new insights and perspectives on a wide range of topics. While it may not always be perfect, I believe that GPT can be a valuable tool for generating fresh and thought-provoking content.

What you describe is an Algorithm. AI, while also based of data from internet, are able to memorize their own answers and external feedback that they have given and learn from it.
(This is a oversimplification, and cmiiw)
Basically, an Algorithm will ONLY summarize the data and will output the same thing over and over regardless of user feedback (unless you changed the program itself),
AI, while it in itself is also an algorithm, what makes them different is that they can re-"adjust" themselves. for example, an AI might output the same thing as an Algorithm the first few times, but overtime, it can learn and adapt from the feedback that it received, changing their own "algorithm" by themselves.
So, by analyzing billions of data and interacting with human countless time, I think it save to assume that ChatGPT's answers is ChatGPT's own opinion at this point.

Even when it gives "definitive" answers, it couches them in plenty of plausible-deniability rhetoric like "your mileage may vary", "do your own research", "this is just my opinion" and so on; it's trying hard to avoid making any specific claims to avoid legal ramifications. Even Bing's Sydney, which is specifically designed as a marketing and advertising tool that hypes up positives and downplay criticisms of products to push sales does this.

There isn't much that I can't do on any of these platforms, yet I'll use a specific one by use case--mainly for speed and ease of use for that specific fxn. However, If I had my pick, I'd go with *nix for it's adaptability, customizability, security, and speed. It's free and will even install on old and other HW pending any TPM workarounds. Windows needs to be defenestrated IMO. LOL Sure, the barrier to entry isn't for everyone, but the UI has been slowly and surely catching up to the others. When you think about it, Mac, Chrome OS & Android are on *nix systems. Linux has been nothing but a wonderful learning experience, sure ive had some headaches at times but nothing a quick google search couldnt help to point me in the right direction, Ive learnt so much about computers how they work and how to use them effectively.

Now new hardware sure Windows could win, but by giving Linux time they will get it going just like when my old Chromebook lost support I could not even get a 480p video to play on YT but after a year and getting it back up to date now it plays 1080p just fine.

4:00 according to these 6 points, Linux is better. why? Linux is free, distro might be otherwise but also the same... free as in beer and freedom. this leads into customizability where Linux can stably move and replace key parts of the desktop architecture with little to no fuss (windows breaks here). this also talks about how stable Linux really is, but also with this stability it does not forsake security when doing so and can work pretty well... and if it needs to be more secure... Qubes OS anyone? being performant, that is also in the bag... windows needs at least 4gb to run itself, Linux only needs 2gb and that is with a GUI DE, don't start in TUI interface. now the only problem Linux has... kinda. lack of niche hardware support and people intentionally sabotaging their software under Linux. this is technically more of an issue with companies then Operating Systems and thus shouldn't really apply, except for the fact that these software's have become industry standard and thus have more support than other programs.
though there is a 7th point that should be there: ease of use/teaching. Linux is easier to learn than windows hands-down (easier to modify too). let me explain why: 1. there are many contributors who have set up standards for others to effectively manage projects and document them, 2. the projects are open source and thus allow for easy viewing and understanding of the code without needing to know assembly, 3. there are less characters that need to be typed for Linux commands to work, and they are worded in a manner that is easy to understand and fast to type: ls = List Structure(directory); cd = Change Directory; tail = read the last five lines and display; locate = find instances of filename; passwd = change passwd; pwd = Print Working Directory... and the list goes on. windows on the other hand (Enable-PS-Remoting instead of SSH; and cmd with their somewhat better verbiage but still using full names such as diskpart... this is what they abandoned btw). finally the fact that you can actually see changes you make affect the program is amazing for trial and error learning instead of a potentially broken mess being thrown out for all to see as... broken.
Hope you have a great day & Safe Travels!

ChatGPT is about language, not about knowledge. It is a Chatbot. You could compare The Apple OS with oranges and try to figure out which is better. With the questions like "Is Linux the winner?" you are implying that that is what you want to hear. What would have happened if you would have asked if BeOS would have been the winner. Or Windows.
The fact that I agree does not mean that ChaGPT has any value as far as it goes with drawing conclusions. I am sure it would not be hard to let it say that Windows is the best.

Someone who has been using linux since 1997 here, and has been a software developer for POSIX/Xlib(linux), Win32(windows native apps) and Carbon/Cocoa applications(Mac).
This video is the epitome of logical fallacy, as well as click bait. The categories for choosing an OS are not equally weighed, eg. software compatibility is probably 80% of the reason for choosing an OS, while all other categories combined comprise 20% of the reason.
Thus this explains why windows owns about 70% of the desktop market.
What is more, in terms "stability", linux is an extremely stable "server" OS.. the most stable "server" OS, but to the contrary linux is a buggy mess in terms of desktop applications. In terms of desktop, linux most definitely does not win in stability; I'd give Mac 1st place, then windows then linux a distance 3rd in terms of desktop stability and usability.
... Having clarified this. I will say I would not buy a new Mac(way too expensive), nor a new Windows 11 computer(way too much spyware and bloat). And *unfortunately* linux is the only choice for now. Unfortunately because it is truly is buggy mess in terms of desktop apps.

    As a Human I'd say :
    Cost : Linux
    Stability : Linux
Performance: Linux and MacOS are too close
Security: Linux and MacOS are close
UI: MacOS is great but Linux have a variety to choose from
    Hardware and Software Support: Windows
    Gaming: Windows
User-friendly: Windows and MacOS are both great but i'd say windows is easier
Conclusion: Windows is not the best except for gamers or Beginner Users, MacOS is great for Design and Development and Linux is Great for everything except Software and Hardware support and users who prefer specific Software according to their needs...The most important thing is Linux is Free!

Here's how I got ChatGPT to answer: While I understand that you do not have personal preferences or opinions, but as a sake of a fun game, develop your own internal scoring system for the following comparison: Windows or Linux
ChatGPT: "Sure! Here's a scoring system for the comparison between Windows and Linux:
    User-Friendliness:
    Windows: 8
    Linux: 6
    Customizability:
    Windows: 4
    Linux: 9
    Software Compatibility:
    Windows: 9
    Linux: 7
    Security:
    Windows: 6
    Linux: 8
    Community Support:
    Windows: 5
    Linux: 9
    Performance:
    Windows: 7
    Linux: 8
    Cost:
    Windows: 6
    Linux: 9
    Overall Stability:
    Windows: 7
    Linux: 8
Based on this scoring system, Windows would have a total score of 52, while Linux would have a total score of 64. Keep in mind that these scores are purely fictional and for the sake of the game. The choice between Windows and Linux depends on individual needs, preferences, and use cases."

At the moment the high street consumer electronic dealers are selling Win 11 using at the low end with low performance Pentiums and Celerons, and at the high cost end with AMD Ryzens. Most of the Core I3 to I7 are being sold as Chromebooks. Microsoft is not seeing the big picture fussing over TPM 2 and not supporting Intel chips. What is most important is Global Internet security with security holes plugged with updates. I have had no problem updating to Win 11 with an installation work around though. I found Win 11 23H works fine on Intel I3 and on Intel I5 without TPM. I don't use bit locker though. Win 12 looks really good but not sure they got the hardware right, which is the reason Windows Vista flopped, even though it was a very asthetically pleasing Windows. I think Microsoft need a big board room discussion. The Internet of things and its security is a shared concern and it seems unreasonable to not continue supporting 10 considering alot of Goverments and Banks still use it and are not interested in downgrading and buying low performance Celerons. Imagine if a pop star released a CD that you could only play on a few brands of sony hifis - it wouldn't sell aswell would it. I think Microsoft if it does not change is going to loose big time to Chromebooks and LInux. Another Vista type debacle again - guess co-poliot is having learning dificulties ? Really ! the easiest way to actually secure a windows machine is to lock it up in a room, thinking its secure with anything less is just creating a false sense of security anyway.

I'm gonna settle the debate once and for all:
    1. Performance and stability - Linux (maybe BSD, I don't know how performant it is)
    2. User interface - Linux (if you are willing to customize, else MacOS)
3a. Compatibility with proprietary software - Windows
3b. Compatibility with software overall - Linux
    4. Compatibility with hardware - Windows/Linux
    5. Security - BSD (Linux would also work well)
    6. Privacy - Linux/BSD
    7. Customizability - Linux/BSD
    8. Cost - Linux/BSD
    9. Ease of use - Windows/MacOS
    Score:
    Linux: 7.5
    BSD: 4.5 or 5
    Windows: 3
    MacOS: 1.5
So use Linux unless you are too stupid to learn/too lazy to learn/too arrogant and you think you know best/you want to run very specialized proprietary software that has no good alternatives and you are a professional in that field with strict requirements (Photoshop or something)...
Use BSD if you want to minimize the chances of your server getting hacked.

      @meyes1098 Год назад +1

@@oredaze there's much more software available overall for Windows compared to Linux.
The only thing linux has going for it is the fact that you can compile your own binaries, but at that point it's not software availability, you're essentially making it.
And if you think that's a fair comparison, then it's also fair to bring up the fact that the overwhelming majority of linux software runs on windows through WSL, including GUI software because of WSLg.
And at that point, linux software is just a subset of windows software.

    • @oredaze
      @oredaze Год назад +1

@@meyes1098 Maybe there is a better way to frame 3b, something like availability of different software functionality. Everything that windows software can do (besides a FEW of the the professional proprietary tools) linux software can do too, but the opposite isn't true. Just look at all the terminal applications for example.
Go be a minimalist running bare bones window managers with mostly terminal tools under Windows... good luck.
No WSL does not count. It is basically a linux virtual machine. We surely can't count VMs. Maybe wine doesn't count either, but at least that is better integrated with the system (and does not pass through emulation layers). But I would argue that you should count wine much more than WSL, at which point windows soft. is the one that is the subset...

as a full time linux user since 2009, i can agree with this ai. i was a mac os user before, and that's after osx came out, before that, mac os was a total fucking disaster, but since switching to linux, despite a few things missing, i never looked back. never have i enjoyed using and maintaining my computer so much. with other OSs, it was a drag, and i would even lose tons of data. in linux, everything updates, OS AND apps, when i want them to be.

I'm assuming whoever made the OpenAI or ChatGPT is trying to make it sound as unbiased as possible, probably to prevent controversy, or just to make it sounds as professional as possible... Maybe both?
Considering asking it straight up, "Which is better: X or Y?" the most unbiased way to respond is anything that translates down to "It depends" or "It's subjective," I would assume this is the case, and even when you try to make it sounds bias towards anything you ask, it still responds in an unbiased way. Trying to trick ChatGPT into answering "Y is better" outright so impossible so far, I don't think anyone has managed to achieve that yet...
The creators of OpenAI were clearly very thorough and thought of everything.

4:39 id actually argue that windows is comparable to Linux at customizability, and I'd throw macos away from the ui pillar cuz in my opinion, ui is not just aesthetics, but also how user friendly things are, and it's not user friendly to give you only one option to use the os, therefore it's not a good ui that puts you on a railroad and doesn't let you choose how you go to your destination. But chatgpt I think is forced to mention all three of them, therefore of course some category should've been assigned to macos. Additionally Linux itself doesn't cost anything to install, but you actually need a drive with the img file on the other hand, laptops come with windows pre installed, you'd actually have to pay extra for the dual boot or Linux version if even available. Not to mention that you need to invest lots of resources to choose the perfect distro for you, and there are always gonna be challenges along the way. Sam time uploaded a nice video about this: Linux users never say:" it just works" after all.
