Hindi - Penjing Bonsai With Peepal Tree / Pipal Ka Ped

  • This video explains how the Penjing (rock landscape) was made, how the ficus cutting was planted onto it, its maintenance, self watering setup, reviving dead moss, liquid fertilization, getting rid of spider mite pests with natural neem oil spray, pruning for better branch ramification, water rooting of the ficus cutting, identification of defects in the bonsai design & its correction. Phew ! That is quite a lot to pack into 13 mins !
    This cutting is just 6 months old, was water rooted (I do not use rooting hormones), then planted into soil on the penjing, then some of the roots back into water, thus creating a Hybrid-ponic setup - roots in soil & water.
    Why this circus ?
    I love it, despite the extra maintenance involved :-) I get fast growth thru water roots & liquid fertilization. It is different from growing in the ground, which I am aware of. But it doesn't apply here. This is my attempt at a miniaturized version of Vietnamese bonsai.
    How often do I add water & fertilizer to tray ?
    A bushy tree in a shallow tray like this, drinks lot of water in a day. I just maintain a particular level daily with a soft drink bottle re-purposed as a squeeze bottle. For my other similar setups with deeper pots, I change water every Sunday. Fertilizing too is on Sundays, so weekly once. In the setup shown in video, I only fertilize the water, not soil.
    Moss, why so green ?
    I live in Hyderabad, central India and the city has a dry climate. Green moss in dry & cold December is made possible with self watering threads. I do not manually water the soil area. But this keeps the soil wet-ish all the time and the ficus roots can handle it. If another tree was used and appears to struggle, I can regulate the water supply by reducing the threads dipping into water. The moss was collected in 2015 monsoon and 'died' a few times & was stored in dry condition until now. For planting, i just soaked it in water for few mins and then used.

    Ficus in cold countries :
    People living in colder countries might have to accept the slow growth rate of ficus there. It might improve if you keep the plant indoor, next to a window & provide some local humidity. Nigel Saunders is a warm hearted person living in cold Canada & getting great success with ficus trees. I am sure he will be glad to help you in this regard :-) I learn a lot from his videos - / @thebonsaizone

    It is an epoxy compound. Mix the grey & black halves together to form a soft clay like substance, shape it as desired or use it as a glue. Hardens in 30 mins. Costs Rs 10 for the 25g pack seen in video. Cheap & powerful !

    Questo bonsai è veramente meraviglioso! Sto cercando di fare qualcosa di simile con piante italiane Dopo che ho visto il tuo video!
    Come ti ho scritto In altri commenti, coltivo già orchidee e altre piante in idroponica, ho appena iniziato con i bonsai che di solito coltivavo in terreno, ho cercato in internet informazione sui bonsai di acqua e ho conosciuto così il tuo meraviglioso canale

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 лет назад

      Hi Pradeep, not much to show yet. I have been neglecting my plants for a few months now in terms repotting, fertilizing, pest control etc. This plant is alive and sprouted a new branch but is not ready for an update video yet. After cutting off the big ugly root from the front view, the growth has been slow.

    If i used dead moss water+sunlight can revive it?? thats great !! i had been searching for live moss all this time for my ficus cutting bonsai in the making .. but its feb here and in this summer its hard to find ... but this information is great !! i will give it a go and see what happens !!

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Raghuvir, the dead moss usually has enough spore dust on it (like tiny seeds) which grow into fresh moss when moisture and sunlight are plentiful. I have even seen moss patches around a leaky metal water pipe next to a concrete wall, in this hot Feb month ! Try to grow them in wet soil in a shallow plastic tray (without holes) and cover it with a big transparent plastic packet, so moisture and humidity are high inside that mini green house. Once you have green moss ready, decorate around your indoor tree but if it is not watered enough it will soon dry up again. if you want to keep moss alive in the heat, the soil is going to be too wet for your trees. hence, it works fine for ficus tees.

    The little tree is looking very beautiful with nice rock arrangement. It has lovely roots. I want to ask something (now don't say you already have answered it!) Vinny, I have many pipal trees of different sizes can I plant one of them in water or I have to cut a fresh branch? Once I tried an already planted bargad and it was dead.
    Wishing you a merry Christmas and happy and GREEN new year.
    Thanks.

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks Anita and wish you a cashful PINK happy new year ! :-) Yes you should be able to do it even though i have not tried it with a soil grown well developed tree. I would recommend that you do it in stages. Kind of like what i did here. Slowly you can reduce the amount of soil near the base and instead use filtered sand, while the lower roots can dip into water. At next stage, you can probably fully submerge the roots in water.

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  7 лет назад +2

      You need to give the tree some time to adapt to the new water medium, having less oxygen. Its existing roots will slowly adapt by growing new roots with greater surface area than soil roots, in order to absorb more oxygen, kind of like fish gills i think. I am not an expert but I am confident it will work. You can have a look at this video - moving soil grown neem seedlings to water - ruclips.net/video/CafuFISsrtk/видео.html. I have successfully done this for tulsi and drumstick seedling too. But they were all very young non woody plants. Woody trunk might rot.

    How is it a bonsai

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  4 года назад

      i get your point and i have asked the same question after seeing certain specimens showcased by experts. So, think of it as pre-bonsai if you feel that is more appropriate.
