Canadian Tips (From a scout 8 years+): Wear at least three layers for your chest and legs. 1st layer is always going to be the layer that wicks away the moisture from your body(Such as underarmour or a neoprene base layer (MOISTER = VERY BAD). 2nd layer is for heat, such as a wool sweater, NEVER COTTON (Or a hoodie or shirt depending on the weather and how cold it is). Finally the third layer is to protect yourself from the elements, rain, snow, hail, etc (Ex. A well insulated ski jacket & pants). As for socks, I would go with 2 layers max, the moisture wicking layer, and the heat layer (wool, etc) (Then followed by a waterproof and breathable boot). If your clothing/socks are too tight, it WILL reduce the amount of heat. Just remember the acronym COLD: Clean clothes, Overheating, Layer clothing, stay Dry (mnemonic for surviving in cold weather). If anything gets damp, remove and change IMMEDIATELY (If you are winter camping, I would recommend changing your socks at least 5 times a day).In extreme cold situations, you want to cover most/all exposed skin. Say warm peeps :D (This is more suited towards colder temperatures below -20~ +, dress appropriately )

You dont always need a hot water bottle or heated blanket. I have a fluffy blanket just over my sheet and a thick comforter on top and it works very well. Sometimes my bed is a little cold when i get in it but it warms up very quickly because of my body heat and the blankets insolating the heat. I do have a heating pad in my room just in case its colder than usual (:

Preparation
In the winter I always warm my bed up with a hairdryer under the duvet - it's all toasty and warm and you get that soothing noise from the hairdryer too. I enjoy it so much that sometimes I go out into the garden in just my under-crackers, get myself all chilled and then run into my bed and blast the hairdryer under the duvet... aaahh! Bliss!
Gonna be using these this year
Few tips:
I have cold legs and I've found that 'electric blankets' (or better yet, a heating pad) work well if you put it under your lower back (kidneys passing blood maybe?).
It It doesn't do much to warm you up before you fall asleep but I always wake up warm (even in the middle of the night or shortly after falling asleep).
Makes it easier to fall back asleep if I wake up to use the restroom since I'm not (realizing) I'm cold.
If your legs are cold and you take a shower, try spraying warm water there and you'll probably feel what I'm talking about.
Finally, while laying down, sit Indian style and tuck your feet under your knees, closing your leg over the foot, it'll warm up quick similar to folding your arms (might have to alternate feet occasionally).
The blow dryer also works well for warming up, initially, under the covers (baths/showers seem to warm faster though) and just the other day I had the idea to use them on jackets before leaving the house.
When I said (about the shower) 'try spraying the water there,' I was talking about spraying your back where your kidneys are (not the legs).

He meant chop a leg off the tights. I can't see how it would work anyway. Yes, it is dull black, which would absorb heat, but it wouldn't absorb much heat because it's a thin layer of elasticated nylon, which would also wear out due to repeated abrasion between the door and the floor, depending on the gap. This would be an issue especially if you had a shag-pile carpet.

Suggestion: If you're using two pair of socks, be sure they aren't too tight as tight socks impede blood circulation and will actually make your feet feel colder.

Warning: Do NOT use a hairdryer on quality leather dress shoes, it dries out the leather and makes them look pale and it can be quite a hassle to fix it.

Story time: I live in Canada and this happened a few weeks ago. Just before lunch, the fire drill rang and we had to evacuate. We didn’t grab our jackets or anything because we were in Music class. At first, I thought it was just a drill but then 3 fire trucks came and went back. We waited there for 15 minutes and it was so cold. It ended up being a kindergartener pulling the fire alarm because he was curious, so his parents came to the office the next day to pay for it.
