This is a pure Bluegrass song written by The Legend Bill Monroe. Ricky tried switching over to the Country genre from Blugrass back in the mid 80's, but he didnt like it. So he went back to Bluegrass, and thats where he stayed. Hes still there today. If you havent noticed, Ricky is the male backup singer on Vince Gill's, "Go Rest High On That Mountain", along with Alison Krauss singing the female backup.
I knew the keyboard player back before he joined Ricky's band. He was with a gospel group that were cousins of friends of mine. They stayed at their house one night while on tour and Gary played the piano for us and I knew then that he was special. I'd been around really good musicians before because I worked at the local tv station and a lot of them came through there but this guy was something else. He had the whole house rockin'. He also played for Barbara Mandrell,Dolly Parton for a bit too. RIP Gary

"THAT!" is called a steel (or slide) guitar. The picker uses the thumb and two occasionally three fingers to pluck the strings while moving the "slide" to modulate the notes with the other hand.

This song was popular when I listened to R&R. I fell in love with with this song because they played the official video before they showed the movie previews at the show house. Loved the cameos in the video. I also loved your reaction to the steel guitar
I love your enthusiasm Jamal.... it's a real joy to see you listen to various styles and genres of music. You're a true gem and so fun to watch. Keep doing what you're doing brother.
Pedal steel and slide guitar are two different instruments. What Bonnie Raitt plays is slide guitar. What the gentleman playing flat with the finger picks in this video was pedal steel.

Jamel, you're delving into Bluegrass music with this one. That genre of music has some of the best musicianship you'll ever experience. And that instrument that you were asking "That the hell is that?" (Lol) is a Steel Guitar. A mainstay in the country music sound. Especially in old traditional country. Would love to know if you're open to doing more country music. Particularly some of the old 'classic country'.
There's a reason why there is a lot of overlap these days between metal and bluegrass fans. If you like high level musicianship, complicated time signatures and are a music theory nerd, you can find them in those two genres. I grew up playing bluegrass as a boy, became a metalhead as a teen, and came back to bluegrass as a man once I was a better musician
That my friend is a peddle steel guitar. They can between 8 and 10 strings even a double neck. They use a bar by their right knee to bend certain strings and at least three floor peddles bend strings to form different chords. It's also played with a heavy slide bar and finger picks.
This is one of those performances where the introduction is simply, “put your seat belt on and hang onto your hat, and here we go”. When anyone can play an acoustic guitar like this, you know they are a true talent. You should see the video that goes with this. It’s fun and there is some dancing. The instrument that you are talking about is the steal guitar. It’s a common instrument in classic country.
Man was a 6-string beast.....they all kicked ass lol...im of mixed races and I thank God everyday that I wasnt raised listening to just one type of music.....I was raised on classic rock and country and I thank God everyday for that blessing

Ricky started in bluegrass way way back when he was a kid, he was a singing kids duo along with Keith Whitley both amazing bluegrass kids stars way back,The instrument that you’re wondering about is called a pedal steel guitar actually beside the fiddle the most influential sounding instrument making it sound country The pedal steel guitar has two guitar necks, 10 strings per neck and one neck is tune to E9th and the other C6th.. The Steel Guitar is the coolest instrument in the world and it’s really something to watch someone that really knows how to play one, they’re very difficult to play because you use both hands both knees and both feet at the same time to play this instrument, it’s next to flying a helicopter LOL but sounds amazing, I know because I play one I am a hobbyist now for over 20 years and a huge country music fan but most of all a fan of just good music that’s why I enjoy your reaction so much my friend because you feel it no matter what it is and that’s the way it should be
Jamel, I listen to so many different types of music - I get it. If it's good, I listen to it. Sticking to one genre only is denying yourself some wonderful experiences and I'm glad you're still doing this!
Brother Jamel, I love being on this musical journey with you. You have become a true musical ambassador, experiencing music and fun with all of us at time when it is needed. You have seen Ricky before. He was singing with Vince Gill in Go Rest High On that Mountain. There are lots of connective threads running through the music. This in Bluegrass music. Robert Randolph and the Family Band was the first thing I thought of when his jaw dropped at the steel guitar. Loved him on ACL.
Steeeeeeel geeeetar...emblematic of country music now and always. I love that older country!
Dig it. Phenomenal musicians. Song is written by a brit, Albert Lee, great guitar player. No limits my friend! Thanks Jamel. Hope you're feeling better.
You got it right Jamel - Jamal !! Musical vibes do bring us ALL together ! So happy you can see that.. May the whole world see it too !!
You should react to Steve Martin playing the banjo.... he can get it..!
Yes he and earl scruggs playing Foggy Mountain Breakdown.
i saw him live last year. It was a real treat to listen and watch him tear up that banjo
@@kennethhoke2584 Did you see him induct Paul Simon in to the Rock and roll Hall of fame? If not, it's pretty good.!
Steve and John McEuen of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band fame have been friends and fellow banjo players since they were teens. Steve was working in the magic shop in Disneyland at 15 and John came in. They became fast friends.
He plays that song faster when he's live. I thought the album version was fast, but when I saw him live, it blew me away!! He has so many great songs.
Saw him live twice, and met him both times, very down to earth man, lovely to talk to. :)
Jim Reeves song "He'll have to go." Excellent song.
Agreed
He was my grandfather's first cousin. Awesome performer
Loved the reaction to the steel guitar! My Grandpa built and played his own. I miss the holidays listening to him and my uncles play. Ricky Skaggs is a gifted individual.
"What the hell is that?"
A steel guitar.
This isn't country, it's Blue Grass. Ricky Skaggs is still tearing it up. Dudes a legend.
if you like blue grass style music check out Alison Krauss and Union station. Union station is a stand lone band on their own merit but they have Alison standing in front of them so they have that going on too. There is a long list of songs all of them are good. When you say nothing at all features Alison singing who has the purist girl singing voice I have ever heard by the way. You should check them out . Even if you dont do a review or reaction
May I say that Alison has a voice like an angel! The women like their song "When you say nothing at all"
Most definitely, listen to Alison Krauss!
Yes!!
I'll have to say that I think Emmylou Harris has the better voice, but that's just me. 😁
Yes please give Alison Krause and Union station a listen. So good
my dad payed steel guitar those are picks and a bar in the other hand i am 71 yrs old white woman been around it all my life thank you playing this country music
Love your message!
"Let's just have some fun!"
Yes music of all styles brings all people together!
God bless you my brother 😊
This is a pure Bluegrass song written by The Legend Bill Monroe. Ricky tried switching over to the Country genre from Blugrass back in the mid 80's, but he didnt like it. So he went back to Bluegrass, and thats where he stayed. Hes still there today. If you havent noticed, Ricky is the male backup singer on Vince Gill's, "Go Rest High On That Mountain", along with Alison Krauss singing the female backup.
Jamel! 🙌 I think you’d like *Peter Frampton* 💯 *Show Me The Way* *Baby I Love Your Way* among many more!! 👍😎🙌🔥💯
Frampton Comes Alive - Do You Feel Like I Do
For "The Midnight Special" are mos def the best versions
I knew the keyboard player back before he joined Ricky's band. He was with a gospel group that were cousins of friends of mine. They stayed at their house one night while on tour and Gary played the piano for us and I knew then that he was special. I'd been around really good musicians before because I worked at the local tv station and a lot of them came through there but this guy was something else. He had the whole house rockin'. He also played for Barbara Mandrell,Dolly Parton for a bit too. RIP Gary
this is an Albert Lee song, check the original is as mind blowing as this one
Nope, Albert covered it, Ricky wrote it.
Ricky has a background in Bluegrass, started playing the mandolin, then went on to the banjo, then the guitar. Excellent in anything with strings!!!
Isn't the steel guitar in the song, "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny? Don't play that song beneath a full moon with your girl! Not unless you're ready to say, "I do!"
I'm not positive, but I think Sleepwalk is laptop guitar. Similar
I loved this. "What the hell is that?". I was 10 yrs old in 86 at my grandma's house watching her haw and all the country shows. I always wanted to go square dancing with my grandma but I was to young. By the time I was old enough she stopped going. I lost her one day before my 25th birthday May 1st, 2001. Guess she wanted to spend May 2nd with her mama. I was born on her mamas birthday..my great grandma. Love ur reaction and made me think of my grandma.
Dude, Billy Strings- Dust In A Baggie is worth a listen. Also Turmoil & Tinfoil.
Dust is a baggie is awesome. Cocaine Blues, too.
Ricky Skaggs is great! Appreciate you listening to Ricky!
Jamel you need to try some Ronnie Milsap:
What a Difference You've Made in My Life
Smoky Mountain Rain
There's no gettin over me
Stranger In My House
Also, Randy Travis. Too many good ones to count.
Forever and Ever
Too Gone Too Long
He Walked on Water
Digging up Bones
Most definitely
Ronnie Millsap is awesome, played for elvis
"THAT!" is called a steel (or slide) guitar. The picker uses the thumb and two occasionally three fingers to pluck the strings while moving the "slide" to modulate the notes with the other hand.
I have a soft spot for some older country music...that’s all my dad listened to when I was a kid 😄 I’d throw in my request for some Dwight Yoakam - “ Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose.” Great storytelling, and a fantastic country shuffle riff.
Yoakam would be good 👌🏼. 🎧🎶
Jamel AKA Jamal, thanks for reacting to the Ricky Skaggs video. I appreciate your message, "Just have some fun."
John Denver, everything. Start with Rocky Mountain High. Cheers.
Ricky Skaggs is one of the greatest musicians on most string instruments you'll ever see.
Time to dial up some Jr. Brown!
YES! Highway Patrol, Venom Wearing Denim, and the best: My Wife Thinks You’re Dead!
Junior Brown is amazing with his Guit-Steel guitar. In addition to the songs mentioned, try Freeborn Man and his Surf medley.
Ricky Skaggs has been a Nashville heavyweight forever. Monster talent. Can play anything.
Try Jim Reeves "Four Walls", Willie Nelson/Faron Young "Hello Walls" 2 tunes for the times. Be Safe y'all.
Jim Reeves......
Hello Walls
This song was popular when I listened to R&R. I fell in love with with this song because they played the official video before they showed the movie previews at the show house. Loved the cameos in the video. I also loved your reaction to the steel guitar
You should try more 80s country, like Rosanne Cash’s “Seven Year Ache”.
"Don't bother calling to say you're leaving alone when there's a fool on every corner when you're tryin' to get home"
Good stuff!!!
And "18 Wheels And A Dozen Roses" by Kathy Mattea.
BIGBLOCK5022006 yes!
Good one!
I love your enthusiasm Jamal.... it's a real joy to see you listen to various styles and genres of music. You're a true gem and so fun to watch. Keep doing what you're doing brother.
Up for some fun? Alan Jackson, It's Five O'Clock Somewhere.
I, personally, consider this more Bluegrass than Country.
THAT is a slide guitar, a staple of older country music.
Also known as a pedel steel and or steel guitar.
Pedal steel and slide guitar are two different instruments. What Bonnie Raitt plays is slide guitar. What the gentleman playing flat with the finger picks in this video was pedal steel.
Yessssss one of them Kentucky boys and I am too. I remember this song when he released it because his picking blew me away . My brother that's a steel guitar .
If you want a song you can feel, The Highwaymen “Desperados Waiting for a Train” or Kris Kristofferson “Casey’s Last Ride.”
i think i like mark chstnuts version of desperados best
FYI, you saw Ricky Skaggs when you reacted to Vince Gill " Go Rest High On That Mountain".
I’m so glad you finally made it to some bluegrass! Del McCoury is a bluegrass great. 52 Vincent Black Lightning and Moneyland are two of my favorites. Also check out Billy Strings. He was just nominated for several International Bluegrass awards. Good stuff. Also- glad you’re feeling better!
I’ve seen Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder live a few times. Absolutely some of the technically top tier musicians I have ever seen!
Growing up, this man was on 8 track in dad's truck a lot. Thanks bud, that man can pick!
Grew up listening to Ricky Skaggs. He did a song called Ain't no grave that his daughter has remade. Her name is Molly and it is a awesome hymn.
I really appreciate the personal sentiments you shared. Thanks, and keep up the good work. One love
all those guys bringing the fire to those instruments DAAAAAYYYUMM!!!
Ricky is super talented.
The music of poor white folks from the Appalachian Mountains. Truly some of the best musicianship in all of country music can be found in Bluegrass. The instrument you asked about is a steel guitar, popular in different forms of country music. You just Keep on Keepin on and ill enjoy the ride with you.
