Tito Gobbi was the best baritone . I saw him in Pagliacci and Rigoletto . He also an amazing dramatic actor who brings all his feelings to each character . I absolutely loved him in Rigoletto and his Iago is the most powerful role he ever sung . Bravissimo !!! Il Grande Tito Gobbi .
If you want an aria that tests whether the baritone merely sings the notes or sings the meaning of the words, there are few that are as good as this one. Gobbi is not just a fabulous actor (with every raised eyebrow and smirk he powerfully conveys the sinister and sly nature of Iago, and his enjoyment of evil), but he also is incredible in letting his voice "act." In other words, even if we could not see his great acting and merely heard this on a recording, we could hear the sinister and evil Iago coming through powerfully. The only baritone I ever heard as good as Gobbi (or perhaps even better) in this aria was the incomparable Lawrence Tibbett, who in addition to similarly great qualities, also had a more incredible voice to go with it.
