Bushcraft Fishing Rod and Reel - ALONE Season 8

  • I got loads of comments about the bushcraft fishing rod and reel I made on ALONE Season 8 Episode 1 so that's what this primitive skills video is all about! Long before being dropped off on the shores of Chilko Lake in central British Columbia I knew that primitive fishing was going to be a big part of my survival strategy. So, in preparation for the show I practiced many survival skills including building a fishing pole and reel very similar to the one I used on the show. In this video I recreate that rod and reel using just my Leatherman Free P4 multitool, some paracord, and a little snare wire for the eyelets. Then Coye and I head down to the lake to try it out!
    Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

    Works great although it ruclips.net/user/postUgkxLoZpKHn4w7dtzXk1eygBlOhbLxuVe3uD took a while to figure out how to reverse it. Nearly disassembled the entire thing. Looks better than my Redington Rise 5/6 reel too.

    I've been binge watching "Alone" recently. As an avid spinning reel fisherman I always think "if only they could make a decent rod/reel combo". The lashing skills are where I would struggle with this but bravo!!

    • @richardhenry1969
      @richardhenry1969 2 года назад

      Lashing is much easier then you think. Just watch a video on end lashing ropes. It’s one knot very easy to tie can be used on a million things.
      If someone else did it you can to. The trick to everything is never quit.

    Leatherman and such are a compromise on every point. I've never been a fan. (those scissors?????) : P
    A good fixed blade knife that's comfortable in the hand,
    a pruning saw and a multi-head screw driver are an infinitely better foundation to build on.
    With each being a solid tool that you can work with, and at a cost of little or no more than a multi tool, I'll take the real tools every day. ; )
    thx for the vid.

We were rooting for you and I suspected you would win, but I didn't watch any of your videos until now because I was afraid to spoil it. Lol.... I was amazed by the ingenuity of this rod & reel setup.. How did you figure out that design? My hat is off and I have a lot of respect for all the contestants. Really nice project. I always wondered if you could make a small unmanned raft with a small sail and sail your fishing rig into the lake with a tether and then retrieve it to get further out in the lake and have some sort of trolling effect. You would need specific wind conditions though.

    A fishing spear belongs on the raft, and when walking along the shoreline, you should have a fishing arrow nocked on your bowstring, the arrow's head tied to the bow with 20 ft of braided fishline. It's pretty common to see a big fish in the shallows, as you stalk carefully along the shore. You should have something with which to harvest such fish. Such a bow and arrows are easily made in one day, if you have the duct tape for very easy fletching of the arrows.

    • @TheJustinJ
      @TheJustinJ 2 года назад +1

      Take your states hunters education course, if you haven't already. Then purchase a small game hunting license/fishing combo. And get out there. If you can catch a bunch of trout with a homemade fly, and arrow a grouse, a rabbit, a squirrel, and a deer in one year: You can probably win.
      (You can tell on the show, the people who win have done it before and the people who starve while holding a bow and fishing every hour of the day, obviously went out there to try it for their first time. Because those pristine locations the trout have never seen a fly and should be easy for an expert to limit out regularly, except for bad fishing gear. Also, big game runs scared out there and are hard to stalk due to all the predators).
      Edit*film your small game hunts, because to get a spot on the show in a couple years, you probably need to have great camera skills, and a quirky personality helps too. Everyone has to send in demo clips to get a chance to get on TV. So get good at that too and get as much footage as you can.

    After finally watching alone ( because of Hayes), I bought a second hand but new leatherman wave. I've never owned one but thought I'd give them a try because of Clays endorsement of how usefull and well made they were. It's now my edc. A day doesn't go by that I don't use it multiple times. I'm a contractor , forager and bushcrafter ( see my channel) and it is by far the handiest tool I own. Clay should get product endorsements from leatherman. They probably sold thousands of these because of him and he deserves it. Fishing pole is great but childs play compared to the dovetailed box he made on alone. I'm going to but that saw he used on alone too!

  • @dranelittle7726
    @dranelittle7726 2 года назад

    The snarewire and bow are not worth taking. I'd rather have the ration of pemmican and the one of chocolate. That's 10,000 calories and enough of it is fat to let you mix it with 10,000 calories of diced, boiled and fried cambium. 20,000 calories is enough to get you thru the 45 day wait on the use of netting, still able to show the producer's a bowel movement per week, when only holed-up in a debris-pile to conserve calories. So, if the raft and treblehooks, and the field-made bow and fishing arrows do not suffice to average catching 4 lbs of fish per day needed to not lose more than half a lb per day, I'd hole-up, make the 2000 sq ft of 3" mesh netting out of the cotton rope hammock and wait for day 45. Mix in 1 lb of diced, boiled and fried cambium, so that the 1200 calories of fish are joined by the 600 calories of cambium.
    Then, if the shoreline was not frozen, I'd use the net traps in 1 ft of water and the 6ft x 100+ ft of seine to push fish from 5 ft deep water into the net traps. Do this 4-5x per day and you're bound to catch 20 lbs of fish per day. Be sure to harvest the fish with the 6 ft long handle made for the Cold Steel shovel. The blood and guts spilled into the net traps is NOT baiting. It's just the natural by product of how you harvest your fish. :-) Once the shoreline is frozen, the netting will have to be shifted over into becoming gillnets, several of them, set out in deep water, at whatever locations prove to be the most productive.

    In a place where fishing was tough, this was a genius invention. I was wondering if you practiced ahead of time, then you answered it ahead of time. We’re rooting for you, the deer could be the $500,000 deer, if you can keep the predators away from it. Great channel.

    You're awesome. I hope you win. You are almost as skilled as that Bill character who posts on all the Alone-related videos.

    Clay, I've been a fan from day one. The video would be so much better if you could explain to us what you're doing. Step by step process would teach so many. Especially the knot tying. That's a great looking reel.

      Why? His camera work is perfectly fine, and it's self-explanatory. Build one yourself, perhaps, and figure out what works best for you.

    i'd rather have 11 treblehooks, with lures made of ribbons of the reflective tarp and wooden "spoons' to make the ribbons spin, flashing in the sunlight, towed behind the pontoon outrigger raft (made in two days, including the oars, oarlocks and tripods for mounting the oarloack) You need a system of small logs towed behind the raft, holding the trotlines far enough apart that they cannot become entangled. Id probably accidentally spill some fish blood and guts on the pile of lures, too. I'm clumsy like that.

    I just saw you win on the show and thought I'd look to see if someone made a video about the awesome rod and reel you made. Little did I know you had a channel with this video. I subbed. I felt you put the survival work in way over and above the other contestants and really deserve the win!

    ok apart from it being awesome.... if you can bring a spool of line why not just bring a telescopic rod ? and guessing you had hooks and lure ?

    Maybe you covered this in a video I haven't seen but why did you bring a bow rather than trying to make one up there? I'm very interested and it is the one thing that I think about in my what if I was going to do it fantasy.

    • @lancedamask9728

      Making a bow is a process that takes years to find and dry the wood and arrows are another thing altogether that need a year to dry so when you put that together it's not doable, and yes you *can* make a stick bow but they aren't useful for anything bigger than a rabbit

    I have a question! Why was there not more hunting done by contestants on the show. Or was there and they just didn’t show it? Was the wildlife population small do to the amount of Grizzlies in the area?

    Orrr , you can take a sapling of any size and tie a string yo the narrow point and a line no longer than the pole and toss like a spear with the tag end tied to the brush or bank . More hooks and longer line for depth you say ? Add lines with hooks and a little weight , giving some space between on sapling ,turn sapling and roll up line and toss . All things are worth a try . In moving water keep sapling short.😊

    We didn’t get a great angle if I remember correctly to see how far it could cast... And that’s damn near comparable to a manufactured modern fishing rod. Impressive work

      I was casting a spoon about 40 yards easily. Probably couldn’t have gone over 50 if I’d pushed it.
