Back to The Land. Prepping for a New Season at the Off Grid Tiny Cabin

- Welcome back to the land! Spring is here at the weekend homestead! It's been a rainy muddy mess so far but it won't be long before things will be green and growing at the off grid tiny cabin! In this video I prep the garden boxes with fresh compost, plant garlic and asparagus and do some general spring cleaning around the property. I noticed the ground had settled at the sandpoint well site and a quick inspection reveals water seeping into the hole. I know it's only temporary but it gives me an idea about a natural ground refrigerator/cooler! Venison and pork tacos are on the menu for supper!
Thanks for the visit!
Here are the links to the shovels I used in the video.

Get yourself a couple of copper rods and concentrate on good potable water hold your wires angled downward so they have to come aginst gravity to cross where it crosses where there is a well once it crosses pick a wire and count the bounces of one wire and will go sideways when done this will tell you how deep your well is
That is info that I've never heard. Everyone always says just dowse the well but never actually says how. This was good! Thanks!
Great video Terry
Glad you enjoyed it
O problema que vc pode escorregar tem que tomar cuidado, bora descansar e ir para a casa até o próximo video, obrigada por compartilhar
Yes, the muddy wet weather can be very slippery!!
Hello. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks with pneumonia. Today I came back. I'm very weak, but I'm slowly recovering.
Oh NO! That makes me sad to hear but happy that you are home. I'm sure being home must feel so good. I hope for a speedy recovery!
So sorry to hear that! Thank You Lord for Your healing hand
👍 nice video
Thanks!
Beer in the bucket.
LOL. I'd be opening the lid too often. It would never stay cold without help!
I have a regular shovel with the root assassin on sides.
Nice! I bet it works great with the additional leverage of a full-size.
Gee thanks for that 😂😂
Thanks for watching!
You must be really strong! I could never lift that big bucket of water up and dump it into that barrel 😳. I want to know how that “refrigerator “ works out for you because I was cracking up 🤣😂 it all makes sense though, I hope it works for you.
Where’s River? ❤️✌🏻
LOL! The water dried up over a couple of days so I'm already on to the next rabbit hole!
Thanks for the video from south ga
Thanks for watching! I appreciate your comments!
Your life looks a lot like mine. Always pulling or lifting something. Cost me a couple hernias but hasn't stopped me.
I've noticed the last couple years my strength isn't what it used to be. I'm sure one day I'll lift like I think I'm still strong and it will catch up with me.
Hello I go to beaches in the spring time when it’s still a little bit cold, and I find 18 karat rings, chains and other goodies like that coins it’s pretty exciting every year I do this and I make some extra cash
I wish I lived near the ocean for that. I do a bit around our freshwater lakes but I've only found 1 very small gold ring. Silvers usually. I really enjoy the surprise antique stuff like watch fobs, tokens, etc.
Get a pump and see how much water is in the hole
It dried up already. I shoud check the pipe though to see if that is wet still.
In the well when water was bubbling, made think of getting some hot chocolate and watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
I think I'd rather have a chocolate well then a water well!
you should make a concrete calvert well
I'm not familiar with them. Sounds intensive?
@@TRERUNSWILD This is where you take a manhole concrete culvert and lay it where you want your well. you start digging evenly in the inside and the weight of the culvert will cause it to slide into the hole. keep adding the culvert sections on top until you reach your desired depth.
Oh I can see that in my mind now.
you should look for meteors small ones you can get up to 1000 or so for each one sell them to the colleges
I'm not so sure I haven't found some in the past. I remember finding rocks that would be detected. Thought they maybe just had iron in them.
I drove a point on my property and didn't hit water but I let it sit. I'm hoping maybe when I check it some day, lol I'll have water. Wishful thinking I know. I'm in sand.
LOL! I thought the same thing.......I wonder if water seeped in over winter! All the water that drained into it though told me there was still alot of empty space!
slowly but surely the bunk house is coming together! thanks for the great video.
I'm a couple videos behind but I just picked up the steel roof. That will make a huge difference.
Great video ! If I’m not mistaken, that’s a hat with the original Maine flag on it … yes ? Take care T
Correct! Given as a gift by youtuber Vorias65
Very cool ! I’d never expect you to remember where your subscribers are from. But I knew that flag for a reason. Lol.
It can only get better once summer starts, there will plenty of sunshine so that you can make more progress on the bunkhouse and tidy up the grounds while we watch your videos!!!
I hope so! The gloomy rain days just suckj the life out of me.
Maybe pack some of the dirt yiu dug out around bucket for more insulation…putting a piece of styrofoam inside lid like you said may work.. then a wood cover with handle to cover the whole? 🤷♀️
Yeah, just having the bucket buried might be cols enough in the transition seasons. I thought about a wooden box but it would just get wet and rot.
I'm a total noob metal detector and mostly use it to find nails and junk in my lawn that will pop tires. I find a plastic shovel works best for me. You can detect right over a plastic shovel to see if you dug up what you have detected.
Ive tried a plastic one. It was great like you said for not being detected but I just didn't like the way it cut the hard ground.
Hey Terry yeah some gutters will help out with water on demand for the garden. Hope that dug out fridge idea works out. Free cooling. 😊 Maybe a bonfire before the woods get too dry and the winds blow the sparks? Hope all is well. Puck.
Yes, Sir! I'm thinking I'll add the gutters to the bunkhouse. It's been perfect weather for burning up some scrap pine.
Thats some good livin right there!!!! Good luck with garlic always wanted to grow my own.
It's actually doing very well. Probably helps that it has been raining every day!
Maybe a gutter and rain Barrel system? Just sayin 😂
For sure. Planning on putting one on the bunkhouse.
Great video. Seems like there’s always work to do at the cabin. At least that’s how I look at it when I go to mine. You might have come onto something with that hole in the ground. Thanks for sharing it. Always like your videos 👍
Thanks. Yes, I get overwhelmed with all the things I could do. Plus, I'm horrible at focusing so jump all over the place. Lot's of starts, not many finishes.
love yer vids... edit.. pop?? i thought you were American? hahaha we call it pop you guys call it soda... :P
I love you saying so!
I love how you go off on tangents and follow through on them. Thanks for another great video!
I tend to squirrel a lot. Probably why I start so many things and it takes forever to actually finish! Thanks for hanging out with us!
Hello glad to see you and River! But didn’t see river!! I love all your videos and they really have some awesome humor to them. Your the man that never gives up, I am sure the wife truly loves that about you as well. Thanks for sharing . Have a awesome week and hope we all see you soon. Love from the 🇺🇸 ❤
Thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words!
Good to see you back. Hey, what happened to the other vid.?
The very first comment was negative and I decided it wasn't worth putting out there as it may not be received well.
Well, that's a drag but I get it.
If it was a random person, I probably would have left it up but it was from a long time sub so I felt the sting more than usual.
Good to see you back at the cabin
Thank you Larry. I have a couple vids waiting so they should be out regularly now.
Does tour and family come up there with you❤❤
Maybe only once or twice a year. My daughter was just up this last week for a few days. P.S. I'm glad you are still here.
Glad to see you’re back! I have a request for a video whenever Spring actually hits MN. Could you go back to that old house foundation where the rusty cars were & take a video when all those bulbs are blooming in that yard? Some metal detecting up there would be fun too!!! Love your videos. 🤗
I will try to remember to do this! I was in the general area today and the lady slippers were blooming but not the lilies yet.
@@TRERUNSWILD That would be great. Oh by the way, I got to see the pink northern lights this Spring all the way down here in east TN. It was amazing!
The best was it wasn't even negative 20 below! When they were out!
It’s about time Mr.
I know, I know..... I have 3 more vids ready to go. I'll have to post every week to stay on top of them
It’s coming along! 👏🏽 Hey sweet, Rivy! ! 🐾
Hey hey!
Great to have you back! Your videos are always full of interesting surprising moments. It has been special to watch your journey & progress at cabin, always so real, with many wonderful & funny moments.
Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoy the vids! I can tend to get distracted pretty easily so the progress can be a bit slow but little by little it's coming along
Best way to conserve water it to leave....the leaves on the garden beds, lol. I put straw on ours this spring.....and so far I'm amazed how the soil is still wet and moist days later. I'm excited about to use less water because of it.
For sure. When I first took out the leaves I was surprised at how cold it was still under them. I think water retention and keeping the sun off the dirt would help a ton. Once things grow a bit I should put some back on.
Looking forward to what you end up discovering as far as the well.that whole scene was wild! Good to see you back, TRE.
Always a rabbit hole to go down!
Nice to see you back at the TC. The mitten had the same syrup and mushroom run.....fast and minimal. Good news is the bass are biting! Thanks for sharing your days with us and that beautiful MN night sky.
You are very welcome!
🖐😎👍
Hi Bud!
Was wondering when this video was made and then the northern lights shots tip me off. Spring has sprung now and I bet it looks much different at the TC now !👍🏼🌲
LOL! I have like 3 vids ready to go but i'm behind a couple weeks so trying to catch up.
You need rain gutters so you can catch more rain water have a great weekend here from Ontario Canada ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦😎
Yes. I've been thinking about that and I think I will put them on the bunkhouse
I also enjoy metal detecting (nugget shooting) for gold. The last two winters here have washed many new nuggets from their hiding places. Might have to get some of those "Tactical Shovels".
I'd love to do some nugget searching. The closest gold to me is the black hills and I think it's mostly flour now? Without actually mining.
6:18 this is how quickly you got bored in retirement, taking up new hobbies.
Actually, I've metal detected off and on since the 90's. My interest in it has been on and off and you are right about retirement, I'm hoping to do more
how are the deer flys this year
None so far. Usually July is the bad month.
No RiverDog ?
He was there. Probably just hiding in the van.
they are magnetic thats how you can tell there meteors
I should add a magnet to the collection bag.
What happened to the sauna plan?
We changed that plan about 6 months ago. Sauna is still on the list but not in this structure.
Hey you do know you can use your cooker for a hot water heater.
Cooker as in the Coleman stove? Sure, I can heat water on it. I'm not sure I'm picking up what you're putting down though......what are you thinking?
@@TRERUNSWILD Maple syrup cooker lol
I have used mine too sculd geese to pluck them. Many of times for water to wash everything at the end of the season. Don't know why you couldn't warm up shower water or something with it
Oh! LOL. I totally missed that. Ya know I've never considered using it for other things! I'm not sure why, I guess I just couldn't see the big picture but you are right! Probably a few things it would be great at that I've never considered.
So true. Plus it uses wood so a super abundant source of fule instead of propane. Now you've got my wheels turning!
Why didn't you put your wood closer to the house?
The wood shed was built before the cabin was when I used to camp in my van. It's ok though because it's close to where I cut wood and there is always wood scraps around it.
Can you just use garlic from the grocery store or do you need to by a special seed garlic?
I use seed garlic. I've heard store garlic isn't as successful but I think it may have to do with which zone you are in?
@TRERUNSWILD I wondered because I've had garlic sprout at home if it sat around too long
The ones that ar around for awhile. Like you!
Where's the star of the channel Mr river dog 😢
He was there somewhere. Probably just hiding in the van!
Seems like your work is never done. 🙃
So true. Especially since I get borted easily and jump around instead of starting and finishing a job.
GRIFTER ALERT
Thanks for watching!
