We really don't do very much dry work, so the folks in the south are definitely going to laugh at this video. We haven't put a spreader on in maybe 5 or 6 years and so it took us quite a while to swap over. Be sure to check out our Cover Crop video to see what dry work entails.

On another note, I love the Air Tractor! It’s like a modern day version of a WWII fighter plane. Appropriately named being such a powerful workhorse. Boom off/spreader on, kinda like re-arming with different ordinance. Crop dusting is like multiple strafing runs. Ag pilots would probably make good fighter jocks!!

Damn, that brings back memories. In northern California, we worked in the rice season. 3 months sharing dirt strips with 5 or more companies waiting for each other to get a clear strip.
That’s a crop I’ve never dealt with.
@AgAviationAdventures It was 30 plus days of seeding, fertilizing, spraying back to back. Back in 1976 to 1980s, we did every type of crop that dominated California. Im sure this was before you were born 😃.

We used to be able to swap a plane in under 10 minutes on the agwagons. My dad used quick connects on the boom hangers and it was a slick setup!

good one, got a chuckle out of that! I don't think my Pops even had a spreader for his last sprayer, a Brave, or the old Pawnee before that either, he did all liquid. So yup, it's easy to forget how every thing fits when you don't do it often.

Good to see you get it done, this reminds me of a post back around corn run time lol. on my plane we can get it done in around 10 minutes but like you said we do it all the time and multiple times a day.

Is the pay structure for spreading the same as spraying, per acre? You are supplied by the customer with the seed, but you load yourself? All the spray and spread equipment is an additional business cost in addition to aircraft Acquistion, maintenance, fuel, aircraft insurance and crop insurance, hanger/pad/water - all to comply with their own regulations. Its a lot for a small business owner.
It usually costs more per acre to spread cover crop because depending on how many pounds to the acre you are doing you may only be spreading 20-50 acres a load instead of a minimum of 100 acres a load with liquid. Generally the farmer supplies the seed.

That's a good idea. This spreader would take a little modification to do that but if we did it more often it would be the way to go.

Hi guys. Was wondering what is the use of the venturi tube on the right hand side under the wind of the Aircraft?
Hi Waldo. That tube allows air into the hopper so if I have to dump the load it will jettison as fast as possible. It goes up to the top of the hopper where there is a small looking bubble type thing. You can see this bubble in videos on the right hand side of the hopper on the top. The tube goes to that location and stays out of the liquid because it is higher in the bubble. If I have to dump the load it allows the liquid to come out quickly and prevents a vacuum type situation. And I turn it around to face into the oncoming air why spreading as it will pressurize the hopper and allow the seed to come out.

Actually asking about the venturi tube that's just off of the fuel strainer.
It's on almost at the belly of the Aircraft around the 6:23 mark.
I know on older aircraft that would drive the suction gyros, but that is not the case on most 502's.

@@waldobean7534 Sorry, this aircraft is not one I normally fly and that venturi isn't something I even noticed. I just figured you were talking about the vent tube as that's the only thing that came to mind over there.
Anyways, you are correct it would be for gyros. However, this 502 doesn't have any of that but it is a pretty old model (I think 1988). So at one point I'm guessing whatever was being used by that venturi was removed.
Dang, you guy's are human, bet the next time you have to install it you won't hit any of these pitfalls and if you do, you can just Google your own video for help! (kidding)😂 Great job both of you, really look forward to each new video!

Yeah we get it done in under 10 minutes, I think we switched like 5 times in one day this year. Having a cart/dolly for the spreader to sit on really helps

What controls the amount of pounds of dry products per acre you are applying?
I have a stop on the handle in the cockpit that I can move depending on how many pounds per acre I am applying. So when I push the handle forward to open the gate it hits the stop and the gate only opens that far. If I want it to open more I can adjust the stop.

When you finish spraying a particular type of spray (herbicide, fungicide, etc.) what do you do with the unused spray in the hopper/booms? Is there a disposal tank you put it in, or do you plan to have it completely empty by the time you return, and before changing loads?
Return with it completely empty. If we’re switching herbicides or from herbicide to fungicide on a different crop (one example) we will clean out which means going back to the field to clean the tank/equipment out completely.

So Turnup, Radish, and Rye don't need to be incorporated ?
Not every seed will germinate but most of them will with out any incorporation into the soil.
