    I think that theres a line though between tolerable Tokenization and blatant Tokenization (or maybe softcore vs hardcore). A female Robin would be considered softcore as its a mantle many have held with the main thing being that Robin is Batman’s sidekick. Heck, Carlie Kelley is Robin in arguably one of Batman’s most famous comics, and you brought up Stephanie Brown. There have been multiple characters that it has gone through and unlike Batman, you’d get different answers to which Robin is the definitive Robin. Batgirl would also be a genderswap done right because she isn’t overtaking Batman’s mantle (if anything Batwoman is), and she is a side kick that was created as an original character with depth despite being inspired from Batman (Supergirl less so since it retconned his parents sending only him out into space) Black Wally West and Nick Fury however would be considered Hardcore, where the characters is actually completely changed for absolutely no reason. Nick Fury only got away with it because hes played by SLJ

    • @ChristDuque
      @ChristDuque 2 года назад +47

      I agree with you. Tokenization is not always a problem (but most of the time in current times).. And I think it's because of the WHY they tokenize.
      In the past, it was more to write more stories. It was not because the main goal was to write an "empowered female robin"... But to write a different kind of story with a female character that happens to be Robin. Those character often start as tokens, but outgrowth their role when they are developed well (because the writers care about them, they don't create them just for pandering) As you said, Stephanie became spoilers leaving Batman, Batgirl became Oracle, etc.
      Nowadays, we all know why they tokenize characters And we all know it's not because they want to write better or new stories..

    • @TheRisky9
      @TheRisky9 2 года назад +34

      @@ChristDuque Stephanie Brown is a perfect example of this. She was supposed to be just a single, incidental character, but the idea of the daughter of a criminal becoming a crimefighter was an intriguing one by itself and the character did make a good first impression. I have that 3 part series.
      I like to use Cassandra Cain as an example. Barbara Gordon as Batgirl was from the generation before, so I grew up with Cass. She wasn't just an Asian version of Barbara Gordon. She was her own unique character with her own unique difficulties. She didn't even follow the "smart Asian girl" trope as she was illiterate! That way, despite her amazing martial arts skills, Cassandra Cain still had things she could believably feel insecure about. Scenes where she's desperately trying to learn to read are particularly powerful and speaks to anyone with a learning disability.

      To be fair, there is so many differences between actual Norse Mythology and Marvel's Norse Mythology that a black version of a white god shouldn't really be surprising. Like the fact that in Norse Myth, Thor couldn't fly by himself and had red hair instead of blonde, there was no "Odinforce", and Thor needed special gauntlets of strength to lift his hammer instead of some "worthy" enhancement. That one change is completely inconsequential to the comic book butchering of those stories. It kinda reminds me of when people talk about how Kratos wasn't in actual Greek Myth(yes I know he was a god but it wasn't the same character), but with how different the God of War games actually are to the source, I don't see how people only highlight one inconsistency.

      @Matt-vz5wy 2 года назад +14

      @@utopian4769 all of that is true, but leftists view race as a fundamental component of a person or characters dna and storyline. I would point to miles morales as a pretty blatant example of them doing that, because it is the same character, almost identical powers, with the only real plot and character divergence being hinged 100% on race. so the whiteness of a mythological man is a key component of who he is, according to their own formulas of character development. Red vs blonde hair, or magic gauntlets vs a moral virtue that enables his abilities are more of what makes him a superhero in the comic rather than a direct representation of the god in Norse mythology, and ties him into the superhero category nicely, as morals and virtue are a key component of what makes someone a superhero. A race swap though, specifically from “the whitest of the gods” to black, is a deliberate move to remove some whiteness from the story, and shouldn’t be ignored or brushed off. It’s a break from the established formula of character development, just to make it okay to turn a character black, and would never be accepted if the races were reversed. Imagine the outrage if a key wakandan leader was turned white, with no explanation.

      The imaginary terms offer "stolen land," "stolen riches" and "special favors." It adds that "WHITENESS gets" "your soul" and "to mess endlessly with the lives of your friends, neighbors, loved ones and all fellow humans of COLOR."

    Tokenisation is lazy and disingenuous.
    It is the assumption that an original, minority race, female, gay/bisexual character, won't attract an audience on its own, when that is simply not true.
    I can understand that a lot of the existing characters have catchy, snappy titles, that are easy to remember and recognise, so using the same name is appealing, but come on, the most memorable and loved ones, are pretty much always the originals.
    Whenever I think of anime like Bleach, you had so many beautifully diverse and cool characters, different powers and even when they had the same outfits, they would always have a unique character design to distinguish them as defined personalities. The creativity of it all was amazing, even characters who had minor roles.
    SuperWoman's outfit is just a feminised version of SuperMan's, it is boring. Just turning every visible attribute into the opposite, does not an original character make.
    I like how the tokenisations seem to think that having, "Black" in the name of the hero, means they ought to be black. Waiting for Yellow Jacket to be turned Asian to really signal how virtuous and not-racist these hacks are.

    • @TheRisky9
      @TheRisky9 2 года назад +7

      And that's the heart of the problem: Laziness. It feels like a lot of these tokenized characters exist merely to be a feel good rethinking to attract an audience that may not even exist. One thing you don't do in business is chase away your existing customers for a hypothetical customer base.
      Changing your once "very white" ad campaigns for your proven hair oil formula to more diverse ads (ie ones in Spanish or feature black characters in ads) isn't going to chase your white customers away. However, changing the formula to ingredients that promote "black businesses" or refusing to ship to states that voted for Trump, will. And it won't attract enough of a new audience to justify that kind of ultimatum.
      Yet this is what the comic book industry is doing all the time. Simple ideas like translating more comics to Spanish for US distribution are overlooked in favor of these huge overhauls and sad attempts at controlling who their customer base is. It reeks of terrible sense of self importance when a person thinks their creation is so amazing, they are actually punishing white supremacists when they say things like, "If you think that George Floyd is anything short of a hero, don't buy my comic!" I guess they don't realize that unless you have the ability to tell someone to "go to hell" you have no room to negotiate. Of course they don't! That quote came from Jordan Peterson and they don't like him. But it also has the benefit of being true.

I don't care about the multitude of relationships between under developed characters, I much prefer the earlier seasons when it was just Joe, Barry, Iris, Cisco, Caitlin, and Wells, the dynamics between them was interesting and the fact they weren't that many characters allowed for them to be more distinct and have time to shine but now the roster is like 15+ people and they want to give time to all of them as if the show isn't called "THE FLASH" 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

      @@MrWordcraft Plus they made Barry the dumbest man alive many of the villains could have been stopped already but no he had to sit around and talk to them and let them get away. Then your watching episodes of Flash trying to stop a flying man with a knife with breathing problems because Baby from the future wanted to go to the amusement park with mom and dad.

      @@MrWordcraft They did the same thing with Arrow. They made the main characters play second fiddle to all of the diversity hires.

      But the comic book Flash also has a team with the same power though..... But they kinda do their own thing in different parts of the world though.
      The Flash Family is an important aspect of the Flash mythos. Simce the Silver Age. Is just that the CW handles it in the worst way possible.
      And Spiderman had like 3 clones of himself running around the United States doing their own thing. And that's not including when Miguel O'Hara got stuck in the past. Meaning that at one point we had 6 Spidermen in the comics without overshadowing Peter
      But again. The cartoon just handles it in the wrong way.

    Ironically, Barbara Gordon became untokenized when she was paralyzed and operated as Oracle instead of Batgirl. But then DC returned her to her more “iconic” (AKA, “sells more t-shirts”) status, retokenizing her _and_ losing some of the best diversity representation they’ve ever had.

    As an extremely long time comic reader I gotta say this is a great breakdown.
    It does help me admit that a tokenized is still tokenized Even if you like them.
    For instance I love Miles, Kamala, She Hulk, War Machine and John Stewart.
    On screen I like versions of Iris and Valkyrie. Sometimes they do a good job others completely miss the mark.
    I think we can all agree that the biggest target for diversity swap is Redheads. Expect Mera to be tokenized petty soon

    I learned the word Token is from Yugioh, it's a type of clone of an original monster that we literally put Token on the table at play... lol

      They are not always clones. Most of the time they are just weaker verisons of the original monster..... Oh.
