Just a suggestion on the question about upright bass. Ear trumpet makes a great bass mic that clips onto the strings below the bridge. I’d also run a second mic (SDC) halfway up the fingerboard to capture some of the string/finger sound. At least this way you’re using all mics and not a quacky piezo pickup. Since all the mics are close you won’t get much room sound.
"At the moment, it's just Apple Music that works on a Mac." -- Being just two months ago, this is not a pressing advert for Atmos, to be honest. My particular interest is soundtracks for games. I've sold some (uhh … one) piece of music for a game, but the idea of Atmos foley in a game is really interesting. One problem for adoption is that the biggest game engine for visual novels is Ren'Py, and there's little chance that will ever support Atmos. Frankly, the idea that I could mix an orchestra from the perspective of the conductor is just pure bliss. For stereo mixes, I already do this from the drummer's stool.
@ Yeah. One of the developers who bought music from me for a game is targeting Unreal Engine in the future. I should probably look at it, but the wee bedroom studio would make it a 100% headphones affair.
Some of it sounds quite good! James here, and I’m an avid gamer when I get the time, and some of the Atmos enabled games I’ve played really do sound very convincing on headphones indeed
