My dad used to roast (chinese) eggplant over the fire until the skins were charred, remove the flesh in shreds and toss them with sweet onions, diced tomatoes and scallions. Then he'd make a dressing of soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, a pinch of sugar (optional), a little sesame oil and an optional tiny splash of fish sauce. It was delicious and my siblings and I would happily eat eggplant made in this way.
That sounds amazing! I will try this next time I harvest some of the long Chinese types of eggplant.
This sounds delicious
Is your dad Filipino? That’s a good side dish for anything grilled in summer eg. meat, fish
Omg. I generally love your earrings, tops, and nail polish when you make these videos.
I just realized ... you're wearing purple when making this video! 🎉😂
It was a side eye "Wait a sec ...." thought.
You make farming look so peaceful and fulfilling.
Just found your channel, and I love this video. You pack so much information without extraneous stuff. Your pace is great for me. I can’t take the slow people who drag on and on and repeat themselves over and over. Keep up the good work you’re doing a fantastic job.👍👍
Awesome! Thank you!
Absolutely the most comprehensive Eggplant guide around. Many thanks.
Awww thanks!
I love the earrings! Gonna look for ‘em…thank you for the information
I direct sowed black beauty eggplant seeds at the beginning of March this year and after 85-90 days I harvested my first eggplants. 3 plants gave me 6 eggplants of 5-6" in size and still producing, it has more growing!!(I think it is because the have shade during the hotter day hours -under oak tree).
I'm so happy. It is my first time gardening. I'm in central florida zone 9b too. You were the one who inspired me to grow. Thank you soooo much. Continue with your amazing work 👏
Awww I'm so happy to inspire others to find joy in gardening as I have. Black Beauty is an awesome choice for FL. I have a few plants that are over a year old and are thriving.
Wow that's amazing!, after the season harvest is done what do you do to prepare them for next season?
So glad I ran across this video! This is my first year growing eggplant. Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful!
One of the best videos related to growing vegetables 😊😊😊
Thank you for the detail!!!
So nice of you! Happy to share my knowledge.
I totally agree! Love the thoughtful details too, like the sweatshirt and earrings.
Fantastic tutorial! I subscribed immediately! Ty so much. Sharing this with fellow gardeners!
💜 great video, thanks!
Once I found your videos you have been my go to for all my problems. Thank you! Unfortunately, this video did not answer my egg plant problem. I have planted some black beauties and I do have plenty of flowers but only one fruit so far. I have pollinators coming in. I made sure to plant flowers throughout my garden. Why are they not producing?
I’m growing Japanese cultivar Kamo, heirloom. Eggplants are not big but firm, sweet and very delicate flavor. My favorite so far. At least for me is not a big producer but I like it so much that I’ll keep growing it. Thank you for your awesome videos.
Awesome I will look up that variety. Try adding more potassium, and phosphorus to see if that helps it produce more. Also, shaking the flowers helps pollinate each one to make sure it will fruit.
Jerra, thank you for your brilliant videos, I find hem full of useful info and easy to follow; but what advice would you give for us gardeners with limited indoor space and that don’t have heat mats or shop lights. Question: can I start egg plant seed outside? And how much sun, shaded or full Florida sun? Thank you!
It would be nice to see a complete video where you show saving seeds also. Thanks
Thank you for this video. It was very helpful to a newbie like myself and a joy to share your passion for gardening. When you switch to a fertilizer with higher potassium and phosphorus after plant flowers, can you share what you use and do you still feed it every week?
Right now I am loving this bloom booster fertilizer that I get from Amazon. I use it on my tomatoes and peppers too, once they start flowering. I had one of the best tomato and pepper harvests ever. amzn.to/3SX7lSo
Great video thanks for sharing 😊
Your eggplant earings. 💙 Epic
LOL thanks
I like to boil, mash and season eggplant and add it to ground beef. It takes on the taste of the meat and is a good way to sneak vegetables into my families diet. It also stretches my food budget. I can freeze it too. Sadly, this was the first year my eggplants didn't grow and produce. I suspect a late freeze killed the seeds.
That is a fantastic idea! I made eggplant parmesan and my family didn't even realize it was not chicken because yea, it can take on a savory umami meat flavor.
Great resource ! My first time growing eggplant. Little fingers and Chinese white.
Thank you
I love little fingers. It produces non-stop.
I learned so much thank you!!! I wish I knew much of this weeks ago, I started my seeds about 3 weeks ago and live in a colder climate. Now that I know I will try a few cheating growth techniques.
The problem I had last year (1st year trying & I COULDA SAVED EM… DANG!!!!) came from something like Japanese beetles living underneath the leaves poking holes & leaving eggs. I sprayed em (I think with Neem) didn’t seem to do much but they didn’t have a huge impact on the plant either. I only had 2, this year I plan to grow several & would like to know what to do if an infesting occurrs.
You're rather awesome. Thanks!
You're very welcome!
This is the first year I'm growing eggplant. I'm having a hard time pollinating my plants. I've shaken them, used a small paint brush & even used an electric toothbrush on them but only got two to pollinate. The plant gives lots off lots of blooms. Can you give me any tips to pollinate them?
Hand shaking them has been the best trick for me. Try to shake in the morning after the dew has evaporated. Dew/humidity causes pollen to stick and not float around easily to pollinate the flowers. Fertilize with something heavier in phosphorus and potassium which supports flower and fruit production.
Try planting more flowers next to it to attract more pollinators.
Is it normal to get small fruit or fruit that ripens while still small?
Can I plant this for a fall harvest
Love your channel. Please help with my eggplants terming brown and yellow. Is it luck of fertilizer?
Are you harvesting them in time? Usually they turn brown/yellow as they get overripe and go to seed. Harvest them while they are still glossy and tender.
I’m going to try growing eggplant this year and making it a perennial. Is a 7 gallon grow bag large enough?
I would say a 7 gallon grow bag is good, except for the very large fruiting eggplant cultivars like Black Beauty. They kind of need more space. Check out my eggplant growing guide for more info: ruclips.net/video/1Rs7pcCP1kM/видео.html
Hello beautiful video I am planning to grow them in 5 gallon grow back, I have black beauty variety, how many plants can I put in each bag? Thabk you hope to get a reply
Put one plant per grow bag. If you can grow them in a 10 or 15 gallon size grow bag even better, because Black Beauty eggplants get HUGE. My plants have been growing over 2 years now and are like 4FT tall and 4FT wide. They are perennial if your in an area that doesnt get too cold.
@ Jerra's Garden , do the seedlings of the lavender thai mini frog eggplants have very dark and shiny leaves? I was watching the videos in hopes of seeing a smaller one, but everything's adult fruiting size, so the leaves just look like a bit smaller normal egg plant leaves. Yeah, the seeds I had grew into plants that look more like a pepper than an eggplant, and nothing like the seedlings you showed planting. Hmmm...
The seedlings should look like any other eggplant seedling. I would nto say the leaves are shiny and dark green like a pepper. They are more dull medium green with a slight fuzzy appearence.
😢 I need help. I'm also growing in Florida. 9B The Black beauty. I'm having issues trying to set fruit tons of flowers but nothing is taken. I pollinate it by hand using a fluffy makeup brush. My plan is about 4 and 1/2 ft tall but I have no bees that go on these plants but all over the sunflowers
Nice dear ❤
Thanks for liking
@@JerrasGarden you are welcome dear
Hi, I have a few eggplant trees that have been growing for about 9 months. I have gotten several harvests, but I noticed that even though I am still getting eggplants the size of them now are half to 1/3 the size they were at the start. I have been fertilizing them. Any idea what I can do? Or is this normal? Thanks for any advice.
Hrmmmm that is perplexing. The only thing I can think of is that its too hot or the plant is not getting enough water. Usually, the first harvest of anything is the best. Better quality, size, etc.... after that it can change a little.
@JerrasGarden I do live in the Caribbean and it is extremely hot right now. I do water them most days twice a day.. but always at least once. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
❤🌱💯
Eggplant one of the most delicious vegetable
If you know how to cook or pickle it
I’m growing orange ones this year
Nice! I'm trying white ones for the first time this year.
I sow the seeds twice for egg plants and still nothing pops up /:
my two new varieties are dropping flower. I think its cuz temp was above 100 F. So demotivated now, even now temp are 90-95. Only able to got 3 eggplant so far.
Yes it is because its too hot. All my eggplants are doing the same except for my Thai Lavender Frog eggplants. It just keeps producing straight thru the heat. I have seeds for that one on my website: www.jerrasgarden.com.
Hiw about growing eggplant in earth boxes in Florida?
It should be fine
I thought the eggplants have to be spaced 18” apart? If multiple seedlings can be transplanted in the same solo cup, that’s awesome!
As a home backyard gardener, you can break the rules a little bit and plant closer together. If a cup has two seedlings, I plant them together in the same hole. I take care of my soil and fertilize consistently so they don't compete for nutrients. It's different in commercial farm settings where the soils are depleted.
@@JerrasGarden awesome!! I use grow bags, on a postage stamp sized piece of property, so I’m definitely lacking space. I’m really enjoying watching your videos and already have learned a lot of corrections to what I’ve been doing wrong 🙂👍
Jerra start making mousaka.
I just made some and it was so good I made a RUclips video LOL. I'll be posting that soon. I like to make videos showing what I do/make with my harvests.
@@JerrasGarden Go for it, love to see the video.
How much is 1 cup in ml, please?

How to grow Solanum ovigerum? Egg tree 😂 I need to know
This is an eggplant so grow as detailed in this video. However, it is not the best choice as an edible eggplant. It looks really cool but there are other cultivars better suited for eating.
