  • A brain surgery called a craniectomy is performed to remove a part of your skull in order to relieve pressure in an area when your brain swells from a traumatic brain injury. It is also performed to treat medical conditions that cause your brain to swell or bleed that can be caused by an aneurysm, brain tumor or other cancer.
This 3d animation shows how the surgical procedure decreases intracranial pressure (ICP), intracranial hypertension (ICHT), or heavy bleeding (also called hemorrhaging) inside your skull. If left untreated, pressure or bleeding can compress your brain and push it down onto the brain stem. This can be fatal or cause permanent brain damage.
Brain surgery is a very serious procedure under any circumstances, but a craniectomy is done when there is an immediate risk to the brain and neurological function due to severe brain injury or stroke.

It's amazing how most brain surgeries can be done while the patient is awake as they don't feel pain and to ensure they don't damage any brain cells.

Gives me chills honestly, watching what I had to go through in my coma after having a stroke in 2018. Recovered extremely well, no symptoms or issues adapting my lost functions to other parts of my brain. Weird to feel the back of my head and touch the scar of the incision and see the action happening in the video.

I had this surgery, to attempt to remove a tumor wrapping around my brainstem and spinal cord. Guess what the bill was? - over $325,000! plus another $50,000 for anesthesia and real-time spinal cord monitoring to make sure they didn’t paralyze me. Nearly $400,000 in one day. That’s a nice paycheck! but, money as a primary motivation won’t produce the best doctors/surgeons like someone doing it for gratification of learning and saving a life.
It might be a ludicrous price, but thats the price to not die a horrible death young, in a country that treats healthcare and life as a business. If you become a surgeon, or even neurosurgeon one day, you can do it for the money or to help people. Just don’t forget, if you live in the USA, that money, and one’s company’s insurance (if you can work) decides who gets to live and who dies, more than need. It’s a terrifying position to be as patient, when being denied life saving treatments. Try to do ‘bro-bono’ work for those lacking insurance or pay, otherwise you’ll miss out on helping those with most need and little resources, and only be helping those that already have the means and options to do so.
If you’re REALLY REALLY interested in becoming a doctor or surgeon one day, then I’d highly recommend you find a doctor to ‘shadow’ for a few weeks one summer before or during your undergraduate degree. Sometimes, there are official programs hosted by hospitals and clinics for this, so you could search for that opportunity. As with any career, it’s best to see what the job is actually like, and ask questions of someone in that position, before you commit. Make sure that even if it’s what you WANT to do, that your aptitudes and interests align with it as well. Anyone who’s been to college before can tell you the sheer number of people that start out ‘pre-med’, and the massive proportion that wash out before even getting a chance to apply to med school. The majority wanted to be a doctor because of money and status, but never worked hard enough, knew how competitive it would be, never developed the drive, or aptitude for biology, anatomy, chemistry to actually cut it.
I wish you all the best in pursuing your dream, and if that ends up to become a surgeon, then good luck. Work/study hard, then some more, and never forget the people you could help and save one day, and you’ll have a chance. And if that doesn’t work out, don’t dismay, just remember that means there’s just something else you will kick butt at in life.

    • @mahbuddykeith1124

Axel was a man who lived in Harlem, New York. He was known for his flamboyant style, often seen walking with a cane and wearing a bright pink suit. Despite his unique appearance, Axel had a personality that attracted people like a magnet. He was friendly, outgoing, and had a smile that could light up a room. Axel had lived in Harlem his entire life. He grew up in a small apartment with his mother, who worked long hours as a nurse to support them. Despite their modest means, Axel's mother instilled in him a sense of pride and confidence that carried him through life. As a young man, Axel began working at a local community center, where he discovered his love for helping others. He quickly became a beloved figure in the community, known for his infectious personality and willingness to lend a helping hand. Axel's style was also a big part of his persona. He loved to dress up in bright colors and bold patterns, and his signature pink suit became a fixture on the streets of Harlem. People would stop and stare, but Axel never let the attention go to his head. He was always quick with a joke or a kind word, and he had a way of putting people at ease. One day, a group of young boys approached Axel on the street. They were shy at first, but Axel's warm smile and booming laugh soon put them at ease. He spent the afternoon teaching them how to play basketball and telling them stories about his own childhood in Harlem. As the years went by, Axel became a fixture in the community. He continued to work at the community center, where he mentored young people and organized events to bring the neighborhood together. He was always there with a kind word or a helping hand, and his personality continued to attract people from all walks of life. Despite his big personality, Axel never forgot his roots. He remained humble and grateful for the opportunities he had been given, and he always made time for the people in his life. He was a true Harlem legend, and his legacy lived on long after he was gone.

In case if you are wondering why the bone flap was not replaced, it is because this is a craniectomy, not a craniotomy. In this procedure, the surgeon does not replace the bone flap deliberately. This is to relieve any swelling, or bleeding. A craniectomy is mostly performed in emergencies.
