Counterfeit products are essentially a scam on the customers. They don't know what they're getting. The fake products could be made of toxic materials, there is no oversight on the supply chain either for safety for the workers, environment, workers etc. Its about much more than just protecting IP's or tax money which isn't paid either in some cases.
