I bought the Makita from Amazon. I surprised my husband (and myself!) … with my ability to follow your directions! Our wood plank looks great! I used the water based sealant first … as you suggested. It seemed to dry really quickly… But I allowed it to dry two hours anyway. And then applied the stain… Wiping it off as I went… And it seemed to dry fairly quick last night as well. However, when I woke up this morning, it still tacky to the touch… Any suggestions?
Hmm, not sure why that would be. It may just need more time to dry? It could be humidity or how heavy the stain was applied. Hoping that it dried out for you!
It gave us the exact color we were looking for. We tried a bunch of different blends/ways of putting stain on, and this method gave the look we wanted. (The finish going on first prevented the stain from penetrating as deeply and therefore wasn't as dark, and it went on more evenly).
Very interesting and creative. What some people do is hit the wood a few times in different places with a heavy chain. This leaves random indentations which simulates the knocks and bangs old wood and beams would have received over the centuries. Thanks for this very well presented and informative video.
I am so pleased with my piece of wood… I am using it as a lintel/valance above my kitchen windows. It looks so authentic! I am using it as a practice board before I get out planks ready for a faux beam. I used the water based sealant first … as you suggested. Beautiful job, great direction, pleasantly narrated. 👍
I agree! 😊
If you burn them, and then use the wire wheel it will give a prominent wood grain texture that looks real good
That's a nice job and the stain came out well too!
Thanks!
Thank you for how well done and concise the video is.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looks fantastic!
Great job that was impressive. I liked how you gave the beams character lie datt
Looks really good.
Beautiful job. Lovely home. Enjoyed it. Thank you.
Thanks so much! 😊
Looks great
What brand is your hand held power planer please?
it's a Makita
Love this, other than the length and width of timber needed, what’s the recommended thickness of the timber 18mm(3/4”)?
We used 3/4".
You make that look super easy. I know this is probably not the case? Can you give me a rough estimate as to the dost of this project? Thanks so much!
So helpful

Gorgeous..
Have you had any issues with shrinkage of the wood over time?
We haven't noticed any! Still looks the same as when we put it up...except maybe dustier! 😂
What size board did you put on the ceiling?
The Blog stated 1x6 pine boards, another comment indicated they used 16' boards
So cool! But why did you put polyurethane on and then stain?

Did you wait 2 hours for the polyurethane dry or you can apply the stain after the application?

How did you get the beam so long without any seams
We bought 16 foot long boards to do this.
Our area is 19 feet wide. So our builder is going to have to splice 16 foot planks together to make them 19 feet. So we will have seams. 😔
👍👍👍👏👏👏
