    Hey Mazzy, thank you for the kind shout-out. I WISH I played in the Philadelphia Orchestra, hell I've never even been to Philadelphia.... maybe someday.
    Envious of that John Cage record, I need more of his stuff on vinyl. I had a theory professor in my undergrad who told our class a story once about the Met Premiere of Philip Glass's Einstein on the Beach. Apparently John Cage showed up with a pillow, laid down in the aisle, and took a nap during the performance. Afterwords Philip Glass said "Only John Cage truly understands my music!"
    I absolutely love John Adams and his poignant topical works. I actually was at the opening night of Death of Klighoffer at the met opera back when I lived in new york. There was a huge crowd of protestors outside, one lady on a megaphone was on a long rant that somehow included comparing the New York Times to Joseph Goebbels... Inside some of the protestors had tickets and shouted down the singers and dancers (in the first act at least, most of them were gone by intermission). Have you ever heard Dr. Atomic? That's another one of his works I really enjoy.

      Of course I realized I said Philly but was thinking Phoenix. OY. I remember reading about all the Klinghoffer protests. Yeah I was exposed to many of these 20th century composers because of Kronos as I’ve seen them countless times and have most of their CDs. If I ever make another video like this, you should be on camera simply translating what I’m trying to convey about the music and of course the correct pronunciations. It can be a modernist conception performance piece. Or I just show thirty copies of Sgt Pepper while you show different classical albums. Stay well ✌🏻

    Great overview of all kinds of Classical! My wife was raised listening to Classical music and consequently we have quite a number of albums. Also I had a coworker who's husband was the Classical albums reviewer for the LA Times and she let me go through thousands of LPs and choose whatever I wanted. So, I'll never feel like I know Classical music but I know I do like a lot of it and there's quite a few albums to play around here.

    Good work Mazzy. I grew up among my dad's classical records though he unfortunately got rid of his entire collection 20 years ago and I don't have the shelf space now to replace what he had for myself. I still pick up the odd one though, often when a particular cover jumps out at me as one I recognise. Classical jackets are the best.

    Love that you're showcasing Rachel's, Arvo Pärt, Kronos Quartet here! Gorecki's 3rd Symphony is a masterpiece. If you havent' already I strongly recommend you picking up the recent record with Penderecki conducting and Beth Gibbons from Pertishead singing on Gorecki's piece. A more avantgarde classical album I highly recommend is Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire) and Colin Stetson's joint album "Never Were The Way She Was". Violin and saxophone cacophony alert!

    Living in a small town in Kansas, I don't have a lot of opportunity to discuss Harry Partch (or liberal politics for that matter). I'm starved for classical channels on RUclips, though I do enjoy poetryonplastic. I thought he was a little harsh on Igor's recording of Le Sacre, I've always had a soft spot in my heart (maybe my head) for it. My favorite version is the Bamberg Symphony with Jonathan Nott on Tudor. I would love to have Michael's discogs collection list. I have access to yours, I get kick out of going through it. Mine is emerydenver, for whenever you're looking for tedium. I really like your memoirs on your journey through records. I have similar experiences under very different circumstances (I turn 66 next week). I don't comment much but I watch a lot.

    • @poetryonplastic
      @poetryonplastic 3 года назад +1

      Yeah perhaps I am a little too negative towards it. I guess in my mind because it’s such a heavily recorded piece and there are so many better examples that get overshadowed by the Stravinsky version. The playing on that recording is really fine, mostly because the musicians had such a huge respect for the composer. I guess my main gripe with it is that the interpretation is a little “cold”, by that time Stravinskys music was completely different from the music of the 1910s, and I think he was interpreting it more through the window of his contemporary stylistic ideas. I think this piece really shines with a more Strauss-esq impassioned reading, which is why I love the Bernstein so much.

      @@poetryonplastic It's a lot more fun giving honest opinions. Musicians playing in the Columbia Symphony I'm sure knew the piece inside out and weren't overly dependent on Igor's cues. At Penn State in the early 70s I sang in a performance of Les Noce, I did a lot of complex counting because I knew there were no cues coming (many rests affording no rest). I would love to check out your collection on discogs if I may.

    Don't run away. There is an awful lot of MONEY in classical vinyl. If you find an old record by Leonid Kogan in a charity shop, buy it, because it could be worth $10,000. If you find an old classical record with a SAX prefix, buy it, because it will likely have a significant value. The records worth money are often pressed in Great Britain. Other names to look for: David Oistrakh, Russian violinist, and Georgy Cziffra one of the greatest pianists of all time. With respect to music, if you are American, try Aaron Copland's Billy the Kid (1938). For Chopin, concert pianists Malcuzynski and Australian Roger Woodward are the best (fun fact: Chopin is Barry Manilow's favourite composer behind Laura Nyro). For Franz Listz, Cziffra is the man.
    For the best intro to classical music, see the stunningly sexy and beautiful Khatia Buniatishvili play Clair de Lune to perfection (red dress version) - its the best music video I've ever discovered on youtube.
