Review of the Conn 62HI Bass Trombone
See more about it here:
www.conn-selmer...
i literally just watched this whole thing and i'm not even a trombonist. i play the clarinet.. anyways, i love this man!
Tryin to figure out what he blurred out on the whiteboard....
Pick up the pork
Well, picnic in the park is what I saw.
Figuring it out would defeat the purpose
its a spot on the camera lens
FireBacon23 - It's not a water spot because at 0:28 the spot disappears and reappears later.
I bought a Conn 62h in '69. This one had the tuning in the slide. One great trombone. What was weird was I sat 1st chair, 1st trombone but found hitting the high notes was fairly easy on it. Glad you got this great trombone
glad you have a full line of trombones that really satisfies you!!! Your King 2B, Bach Strad 42T, and your now Conn 62HI really fit well together. Congratz on your new acquisition.
something to think about. most of us subscribe to see your playing, but maybe you could also do more trombone reviews and comparisons if your local store or friends wouldn't mind letting you mess around on their horns. Just something I thought you might be interested in. like comparisons between like say the Bach Strad 42 series and the Yamaha Xeno 882 series. That is if you have time for things like that.
another thing. perhaps a video on picking the right mouthpiece? I am still only a high school student, but on a nice horn like my xeno, it is easier to hear and feel a difference between mouthpieces and which work or not. ive always used a Bach 6 1/2 AL, and still use one, but i was wondering if maybe it was time I found the real right mouthpiece for me rather than just the one ive been using and how i might do that? thanks.
keep up the great work!!!!
watched the entire thing and I play saxophone. we watched his Styx cover in band today and since then I've basically really loved his playing
Nice introduction. I'm glad you found a horn you like.
I switch horns a lot (cornet to tuba), and for me the Olds George Roberts provides the easiest transition. Those horns are extremely light - even a lightweight slide way before those got popular. When you hit my advanced age, the weight and the breath are everything!
You know what will be the best horn you ever played? The one you sold two weeks ago.
All the best!
This gives me comfort. I am planning to play bass trombone next year in Middle school. I have played both tuba and trombone, so I wanted to try this. Thanks for reviewing it!
You should donate a bass trombone to me
Nice video but the “pickle in the pork?" really distracted me!
It's a picnic in the park! Communal white boards, what are ya gonna do?
Having a dependent second valve is theoretically better because when the valves are not being used, you only have to blow air through one of the rotors. With two independent valves, you have to blow through both rotors all the time, and this can increase the stuffiness of the horn.
to all you trombonists out there, i am a tuba player. Just a tip for all trombones but mainly bass trombones, keep your cheeks in. It's hard to do at first but it makes it sound better and no just in your face bass. No rhyme intended. Keep up the vids chris!
I AN A HUGE FAN. I a seventh grade student and used to be very... Well BAD. I never practiced and didn't play well but one day we watched on of your videos in class the day after our concert. EVEN THE TRUMPETS with their huge ego thought you were cool since then you have inspired me . My band director moved me to the nice expensive(not as nice as yours btw) and let me play bass trombone I would just like to thank you for inspiring me
Finally, trombone reviews
(Part 2) and performed on 3 horns : a King 3B, Bach 36, and King 7B standard Bass. As a student all I ever heard was how wonderful the Conn 88H was. I tried it as well as the other models in the Conn line. To this very day I've always felt that the Conn trombones produce A DEAD AND LIFELESS SOUND. I have never heard anyone from Los Angeles to Stockholm who could get a Conn trombone
Hey Chris :). I am a trombone in training. I am in 8th grade. I just wanted to let you know that you are my trombone idol :). Thank you for giving me the inspiration to carry on :). Could you do an arrangement of Radioactive?
I'm in my 60's and I played the trombone through college and semi professionally into my late twenties. Originally, I had wanted to become a music teacher and full time musician, but life decided otherwise and I've had another career. I was formally and classically trained, and I would just like to give a personal opinion for the "amusement" of anyone on this site. I owned (Part 1)
Could you make a video explaining why you chose the horns that you did? Did you try a bunch of trombones (bass, symphonic tenor, and jazz tenors alike) and those were what worked for you? Was there budget involved? It's kind of odd how you like the Bach 42 but picked a Conn bass. I've always felt a distinctive difference in resistance between Conns and Bachs. Conns feel more open to me, while Bachs have more resistance. Resistance does help some play better tho, it's obviously working for you? Does budget prevent you from getting something BAC or Rath, Edwards etc. custom? Or did you just never feel the advantage in them?
Get a new bell for that Bach and you'll be happier in the long run.
Aidan Ritchie, I finally got a bass trombone. Yay!!!
Did you get a chance to try the Yamaha Xeno basses? I play on a xeno tenor, and if I ever got a bass, it would probably be a xeno too. Also, I wouldn't be so sure about using that for the rest of your life...Conn will probably bring out newer trombones in the future and of course more and more will keep coming from other companies :P.
I really love what you're doing with trombones. I've been watching you for a while now, but if you have a Baritone, that would be a great video
Hey Chris excellent review. I've been in search for a bass. I enjoy the sound and your revoew. I may get this now haha. Have you tried a yamaha xeno ybl-830? If so could you tell me your thoughts between the two. Great video can't wait to hear your next cover!
palmswag2015 what did you end up getting? I’m in your shoes now four years later.
@@ckeilah what did you end up getting?
I have the Jupiter JSL-1240L Bass trombone and I think that this horn has a fantastic upper register and a fantastic lower register in alternating from low to high easily! Fact the Bass trombonist in the La Philharmonic has the same horn!!!!!!! But the cost is 5,095 but totally worth the great tone/ just excellent and accurate sound!!!!!!!!
I love how I recognize that Bordogni exercise you were playing. I had to play it not too long ago.
I still like my Bach 50B3O. It has a beautiful sound, is a monster, but more my speed.
Awesome! That horn had such a great sound
I just recently started playing on a 71H, it's also the best Bass I've played on. Hopefully I get a chance to play that one sometime as it's got everything I want in a Bass bone!
Nice! I'm saving up for the Conn 88HSCL.
codeywings10 did you get it yet?
I bought one a few weeks ago nd yes its amazing i use it in a big band for jazz and its just amazing!!!
Very nice! I recently played no.5 of the rochut etudes as well.
(Part 4) to produce such a sound it is necessary to have just the right resistance, irrespective of bore size, as well as a particular weight and alloy composition. To this end, these factors came together beautifully in the King, then the Bach line. I should add that I also tried out the Yamaha and thought it was a very fine trombone, but did not have the resistance I was seeking for that more focused (pointed) sound. End.
I play a Strad model 50G and I love it. It's sad to see you get rid of your Bach.
Hey, Chris, you sound real nice on both of those bones, but especially on the Conn. Question: do you think the Conn could hang with the section at orchestral volumes?
I didn't know playing the trombone could be so sexy. I play the trombone in my university's marching band and have seen many examples of the trombone not being sexy. This is a nice change.
That trombone is gorgeous!
Hey Chris! I know that you made this video a while ago but I would GREATLY appreciate if you would reply to my comment. I am going into 8th grade but want to continue into high school. Last year I played a tenor with a F-Attachment. Over this summer, we are going to buy a bass trombone. We were looking in the Conn 62HI then I came - across your video... by the way you're awesome - so I have heard how great it sounds. Did you buy the Conn 62HI online? Or in a store?
Is there a video anywhere introducing the rest of your trombone family? Id love to see what other horns youre rocking :-)
hey chris i also use the conn 62hi for jazz band and playing on my own best horn i have
Are you a planning to perform primarily as a bass trombonist, or are you going to be a tenor player? Just curious.
Rath R900! best Bass trombone i've ever played/owned!
I seem to recognize the little tune at the 2:32 mark of the video. The sound quality is amazing! I really enjoyed listening in! Thanks for sharing! I am actually looking into getting my trombone from 5th-9th grade repaired or sold. I have my current horn from about 4 years ago, that is working amazingly, especially for our symphonic band. I'm just curious as to what you opinion of a horn with good quality is and where I could possibly look? And where would be best to sell it if I end up selling? Thanks!! Congrats on all your success, I can't wait to hear more!
It's one of the Rochut vocalise etudes
Do you know the tune right before the tune you mentioned?
I think that's a gorgeous horn. In sound and appearance, I think this one trumps the bass trombone you were using haha.
Hey Christopher, I'm a high school tenor trombone player and this year that's coming up, I'm going to be marching with my schools very old but very nice bach bass trombone, do you have any tips for me that I could use? Plz I would appreciate it
I could buy this for as much as I'd pay for the Bach 42BO I'm looking at, But with the way it sounds, I could play first for symphonic and bass for orchestra. This would be absolutely perfect for me if I had money.
Hey I am a tuba player and interested in buying a bass trombone. Which one should I buy in your opinion
Congrat I have a Conn 88hcl large bore tenor
Try lip shifting for those super pedals! Put your bottom lip on the mouthpiece and stick that upper lip in there and put slow steady warm air in there! With this technique i can hit a Double B Natural bellow the staff, but then again Im a tuba player... lol
You should try out Stork and Schike Bass Trombone Mouthpiece!
Are you more often on bass or tenor? you sound very nice on bass!
Hey Chris what mouthpeice do you use for bass, and what are the models of your other trombones?
I got my Conn 62HI 3 years ago.
Amazing B-Trombone for the price.
You should also try the costom WHF mouthpieces...
basstromboneicious greetings from Austria.. ;-)
(Part 3) to "sing". For the life of me , I just don't understand why any brass player would settle for such a flat tone. Fashions change in everything, including trombone playing. As a student the trend was toward larger and larger sound. The Conn trombone provided a solid reliable and powerful sound-- and DEAD. I suppose I always swam against the current in this regard. I loved having a dark, centered, and focused tone. In order to
Bach and Shires are the only brands I will buy from.
Can you tell me what Studio model Conn bass trombone this is modeled after?
Thanks for the great video!
What's better idea? Get A F Attachment Trombone, Or Bass Trombone?
That depends. If you haven't played a Bb/F trigger trombone, don't bother with a bass trombone, as it will be very difficult to adjust to the bore size. If I were you, I would rent a used F-Attachment from a music store, learn and play on that, and then move to a bass trombone. I hope this helps!
well they're different instruments so unless you're playing a 4th trombone part or a bass trombone part you won't need a bass
if im too late oh well. but a bass trombone is much better if you want great range in low and still decent in high range
I'M GETTING ONE OF THESE
Questions!
How can you hit those petal tones so clear...Ish. im struggling with the B flat below the standard concert. and how do you do the false tones for that matter? Thanks.
Congrats on the new horn. I've had my 62HI now for nearly ten years and I love it. I chose mine after trying many other makes. Funnily enough my old trom was a Bach 50 as well!
You're amazing Christopher mate! :D :D :D :D :D 👏👏👏👏👏 I REALLY enjoy watching all ya videos! :D :D :D :D :D :D 👏👏👏👏👏👏
What do you think about knul and hoyer bones
How much did you pay, if I may ask? I'm an orchestral tenor player like you... I play on a 1969 Conn 88H, which I adore. But I would love to expand my bass skills. Want a good, versatile horn, with excellent blend. Independent valves would be wonderful. But obviously, needs to be economical. Thanks!
It's an expensive horn- It goes for $3,629 new. It's one of the reasons I've been playing on the old Bach for so long, saving up for this one!
Thanks Chris :) Much appreciated. :)
Christopher Bill i have a couple questions that i would appreciate if answered
1. do u play anything other than trombone (besides piano) baritone maybe?
2. what makes a triggered trombone different from a bass?
3. (the one we've all been waiting for) what will be your next piece?
plz answer all of these questions if you think it is worth your time! (also find me on gmail!)
thx :D
I'm in the same boat... I play a Conn 88H as well. Played it for well over 20 years. Thinking about buying a bass trombone. I'm really interested in the 62HI. If it plays even a fraction close to what my 88H played like then I'll be sold.
Please Please make a video on how do you grease up (lubricate) your trombone slide
Thanks :D btw: love your videos!
Watch paulthetrombonists vid his method works wonders
ah marshall gilkes pedal jumping. Love that song!
The horn looks awesome!!!! Do you mind if I ask how much you got it for?
base cost is 5 grand can be found on www.wwbw.com for 3.6 grand right now. link here: www.wwbw.com/Conn-62HI-Dual-Independent-Rotor-Bass-Trombone-Outfit-463277-i1144335.wwbw
Hi brother, I am sajo, iam from Indian, pls share your experiences , director conn 8H trombone......
what kind of mouthpiece do you use for your bass? I think I recall you saying before but I can't remember.
The Conn doesn't cut the air back as much! :) The Bach had all sorts of weird sharp turns in it that slows the air down, but it does cause you to be able to play louder ;p But the Conn is more well constructed and expensive as heck I bet. Ahhh, There's nothing better than more Bass. XD
hey Christopher how much was the 62hi if I may ask?
I like the Bach.
2:26 WHAT IS THAT SONG!
Marshall Gilkes-Puddle Jumping
I believe it was an excerpt from Mozart's "Tuba Mirum" from his Requiem.
How much does it cost?
Bravo!!!!
That was awesome but could you do more songs because every time you upload a music video Mrs . Carlson shows us.
Someone can tell what is the music at 2 min 15 ? I don't remember
You should do an arrangement of Blue Bossa!
What note is the second rotor tuned to?
1st is a perfect, 2nd is a half step above it
Compared to pistons; 1st trigger=1+3 , 2nd Trigger=2+3
You sounded Really nice on Mozart’s 🤦🏽🔥
I would love to have a picnic in the park!
i play bass trombone its school owned it looks like your old bass and its for marching
It would be awesome if you did a colab with Pentatonix
so what exactly are you gonna do with the bach?
Didn't you hear? ITs going to the farm lol maybe he'll see my puppy from childhood too XD
Are there any intermediate level bass trombones you would recommend or cheap(er) proffesional bass trombones?
try the shires tbq36
What mouthpiece do you use? Any suggestions to a bass? I started mid September, and I want to try some larger mouthpieces, now I'm using a Bach 6 1/2 AL
I just recently changed from a Conn 1 1/2 G to a Griego .5. It seemed like a big change at first but after getting use to the size, it really broadened my mid to low range sound, and with some recent practice I've quickly been able to get to the higher range stuff back to par. Now, because everyone's different I suggest checking a huge variety of Griego's and narrowing in on the perfect size for you
HEY, Chris, Bill here
What is the name of the tune at 2:26?
Marshall Gilkes' "Puddle Jumping"
What's 0:46 to 0:51 called?
2:30 was that Rochut 2?
well, if you had gotten a open rap independent valve bass it would work perfectly
I lost my trombone oil and the nearest store is no where near me what can I use as a substitute for the oil
You can use water.
Duckymeister321 Yeah water is really good
I use singer sewing machine oil.
what mouthpiece do you play on?
I need you to teach me your ways! I've been playing for 4 years but still need some pointers... Your kinda me idol
Could you tell me if the Yamaha Xeno - YBL 830 bass trombone also has an independent valve? I'm almost certain it does, but I wanted to ask the professional.
Hello Sam.
I have the Xeno 830G.
And both 830 and 830G are having independent valves.
OK, thank you
On the bass trombone is the default note a pedal b flat?
This is a little bit late, but no pedal b flat is not the "default note". Bass trombones are just tenors that can play the low register easier
definitely sounds better
Are you a trained musician? If so trained in what? Ex. Classical, Jazz, Etc.
Is he trained? he asks lol
Trained versus self taught. Like i'm trained in Alto Sax but i self taught myself how to play other instruments using my knowledge.
Key Slot Hey a fellow multi-instrumentalist! Well from what i've heard he studies at a conservatory of music
Is the Bach 50 up for sale?
I was actually just borrowing it from my college
I have that conn 62 h bass bone. it belongs to my school, my band director let me borrow it. How much does it cost?
Theres a tatto thingie on it. It says 62 h, not h-i. Maybe its a different model.
1:26 its basically the same except the valves
Tony Tesoriero
Ia still cant tell the difference. Oh well :p
*****
Really? Im using the 2nd valve fine.
*****
Ok, thanks.
: D
My band should change tubas into bass trombones
it wouldn't have to be a contrabass, many bass trombonists can have the same low range as a tuba with some going all the way to the double pedal B natural which is the last note the human ear can actually hear
Frozengames it’s actually a double pedal E at the low limit
What's the song you play at 2:45?
DevL HeatScopE it's a Rochut/Bordogni exercise
Why play a Conn 62HI when you could get a Rath R9?
Crazy.
Peter Richards what about the trumpet
Dude can you give me lessons?
