I like the comics origin of the characters a lot more. Megatron was a mining robot and Optimus was a hauler. The Primes ruled the planet tyranically; those born a miner would die a miner and were to do nothing but their job, forever. Megatron and Optimus rallied the robots together to fight back against the primes. The primes offered Megatron and Optimus seats as Primes to end the war. Optimus accepted, wanting to "change the system from within." Megatron rejected, because the only way to free the robots was to tear down the old rulers. And that's where you get autobots vs decepticons and the pure hatred of megatron towards optimus: he sees optimus as a betrayer of the ideals they fought for together.

In the IDW comics timeline the casualties for this specific war was over 4.5 billion Cybertronians died, and 100 billion members of other species were killed as well. Considering that Prowl stated that fact I doubt he included animal life. The war has caused the extinction of at least 6 species that had the technology to traverse space. Out of those 100 billion, 1 billion were humans. When the war was over only 10,000 Cybertronians remained. However this figure does not count the tens of thousands who were neutral that fled long before Cybertron became a wasteland.

    • @Dell-ol6hb
      @Dell-ol6hb 5 лет назад +30

Samuel Richards that seems kind of a low figure for a multiple millions of years long war, the human race has existed for about 200,000 and in just that time there have been an estimated 100 billion of us, for many millions of years the casualties would likely be considerably higher than that.

    • @samuelrichards1288
      @samuelrichards1288 5 лет назад +41

@@Dell-ol6hb I am assuming that you are referring to the Cybertronian casualties. Apologies in advance for this very long response.
Unlike what is shown in the cartoon most Transformers universes do not involve the Quintessons creating a slave species. It is often that they try to enslave Cybertronians, and upgrade them with ill intent in mind, but in most timelines Cybertronians are created in a few different ways.
Evolution: This was what some Cybertronians thought they come from, specifically gears and pieces of metal evolving to be alive. This theory was first seen in the first issue of the Marvel comics, but was later debunked in the same series. Therefore this does not happen.
Forged: This happens when Vector Sigma, a.k.a. Primus, a.k.a. core of Cybertron, sends out a pulsewave of energy to a "hot spot." These are specific areas were Primus can give away part of his life force and send it up to the surface. The Spark eventually starts to mold the metal of Cybertron around it, until they have decided on a form of their choosing. Unlike humans, when they are born they are already intelligent, they often have mentors for aid in getting used to things, but they can function, and work within the first few days. Some who are forged are point one percenters, they have a lot of energy in there spark and they are far more powerful than the average Cybertronian. Many point one percenters in the war, were responsible for "cleansing" entire planets. Some are also Outliers, who have abilities that do not relate to there alt mode. Once Cybertron got into a war the sheer destruction caused the Hot Spots to go dormant, making it so the population rarely got more members.
Constructed Cold: This was a way to eliminate having to rely on Hot Spots. Under Nova Prime instructions, the Matrix of Leadership, a portion of there god, was put on a dissection table until it release energy to create Sparks. These Sparks are then frozen until a predetermined body can be constructed. There were two waves. One before the war, which mostly constructed labor class bodies, and one during the war, which constructed primarily military bodies. The ones born during the war only taught how to shoot a gun, then they were thrown out of a ship onto a battle, most died a few minutes after being born, often before there body even started to fully function. So that fewer troops could be added, both sides started to destroy Sparks before they could be born, stopping the population in another way.
Budding: Budding is similar to being Forged except that rather than a part of Primus being seperated and having independent thought. A part of another Cybertronian is split off and becomes another Cybertronian. This is basically just asexual reproduction. Most who budd are descendants of the Primes, rather than direct descendants of Primus. They also share several personality traits that get carried over, and feel small amounts of pain if one of their "offsprings" is killed. Liege Maximo, the Prime of Deception, budded more than all the other Primes, a key traits were often, aggression, and obviously deception. Most of them eventually decided to become Decepticons. The major negative of this type of reproduction is that unlike those who are Forged, those who are Budded have not been showered in the light of Primus, resulting in a mass exodus and formation of a new faction, called the Cybertronians. As such they did not partake in the war because they were to busy creating the most powerful empire of their race.
Sexual Reproduction: There is only one know case of this. Some Cybertronians have organic alt modes, i.e. Beast Wars, because of this they have sexual organs. Since this piece of lore originated from Japan, which does not take it as seriously, we do not know the full details, nor do we want to. All we know is that "Z Grill" and "Kitte Shushu" loved each other very much and all of a sudden a Cybertronian named "Stampy" showed up.
So yeah, it is difficult to get new troops, and it is common to not have any violence between the two factions for centuries because they are preparing for a fight and simply ignore each other until they are ready. Plus it is very, very hard to kill a Cybertronian, despite what the movies show, even if there head is cut off they can still be alive if it is reattached quick enough. Finally after Cybertron was abandoned, they focused more on building new empires than trying to take down their enemies. All of this leading to a very long war that was probably boring for them, except the occasional exciting battle that last only a few hours, kills a noticeable percentage of their population, and results in the destruction of an entire star system.

@@Dell-ol6hb That's the point. ~100 Decepticons being "all the decepticons in the universe" IS a low figure because after millions of years of war, THAT IS ALL THAT IS LEFT. And there apparently can't be that many more Autobots for that number to be intimidating.
So after millions of years of war, the entire Cybertronian race has been been reduced to only a few hundred individuals from possibly millions or even billions and the only reason they aren't entirely extinct is because they're very hard to kill and don't die of old age.

Ultra Magnus displays his pent-up jealousy to leader-brother Optimus Prime by the later half of the show, after having long been denied of the Matrix of Leadership. Nice theory, didn't come across that one.
Another one I stumbled across is that he can't bring himself to off Starscream, because he sees him as possessing several traits that epitomise the Decepticon ideal.
In retrospect, perhaps Megatron had no choice but to tolerate Starscream, simply because he knew the Decepticons would collapse without some form of leadership, no matter how stupid that leadership might end up being. He saw that no other Decepticon besides Starscream, even had the will to lead, and thus Megatron kept him around simply to allow the Dcons to survive if something happened to him.

@@MediaZealot In the original toys they had these little stat blocks you had to have a red filter to read. They make a big deal about Megatron, and his firepower was rated 10.
Starscream was like the only other Decepticon rated a 10. Meaning for all his shortcomings, Starscream was one of Megatron's most powerful soldiers. Also, I think there was a certain amount of "I know I can handle Starscream's attempts to usurp me, whereas I'd have to deal with figuring out who was plotting to replace me in more creative ways."
There is an interesting concept that doesn't quite fit but it's one of those weird theories that just might explain a lot of what goes on. In the series "Beast Wars", they go back in time and land on Earth a few million years ago. By this time, a lot of what happened has passed into Transformer's myth and legend. After a few seasons, it is revealed that the Megatron in charge of the bad guys (no relation, but he renamed himself after the original) has a bunch of data that was an emergency backup plan by Megatron(1G). He spends some time trying to nudge the timeline just enough to put the Predacons on top instead of the Maximals, but this is ultimately foiled in one of the best scenes in Transformers history. (Code of Hero, Beast Wars).
A little later he tries to carry out Megatron(G1)'s plan: Go to the Ark, and kill the Autobots while they are in stasis lock. Apparently when you shove two sparks in one body things go... interesting for the chassis doing the carrying, and in a bid for maximum power, he arranges to bond with Megatron(G1)'s spark. Now it's quite obvious that Megatron(BW) is insane, obsessed with power, and due to the tiny size of the forces available, prone to retreat at the first sign of things going south. Also, he actively cultivates disloyalty and infighting within his ranks believing it makes them stronger. He carries around Megatron(G1)'s spark for the better part of a season till the good guys ultimately win and force the spark back into Megatron(G1). Also, somewhat earlier in the series, Starscream's spark slipped through a transwarp portal into the past and possessed one of the Predacons, though he was driven out later. So the theory goes like this: Starscream's spark is extra insane due to being disembodied for millenia, and he spent at least a small amount of time in near proximity of his original self, who was apparently a competent enough leader to be in charge of the Decepticon's air arm before the trip to Earth. That puts his original spark even more off his rocker and results in the insane scheming beyond normal and his complete overconfidence. But Megatron also gets something from his BW counterpart: Even more megalomania, a penchant for grand schemes, a lack of patience, and an odd allowance of actual acts of betrayal.
Thus both of those Decepticons were driven insane by interacting with another, insane individual, and in one case, his own thousands if not tens of thousands of years old insane spark. Which in the end is an attempt at explaining the Purple Griffon as well.

    • @skuarf

I prefer the old explanation of "Starscream is SO toxic, vile, cruel, narcisistic and therefore DANGEROUS he is way WAY more useful if pointed towards enemies. Too bad you have to live with him when he is nearby".
It's like keeping a king cobra in your house so you can use it to kill people when you need to.
Also he is mentioned several times as an ACE pilot with high firepower almost second to none when in the air, just see him in BW when he possesed waspinator, he mops the floor with the other fliers and anyone trying to shoot at him.

The problems with the cons can all be put under one one phrase: they're a kratocracy, meaning they are ruled by who ever is perceived to be the strongest.
This is why, I think, Megatron doesn't kill Starscream, because in Decepticon culture, he's within his legal rights to challenge Megatron whenever he pleases, and killing him off could be seen as fear, and thus weakness, unless he betrays the decepticon cause. Hell, Starscream isn't alone in trying to replace Megatron, and the moment Megs is gone, everyone got into a measuring contest brawl to see who should be in charge. This is why they are constantly backstabbing each other and so forth, they are bred into this mindset and thus their lack of trust for each other. In the comics it's worse, Shockwave actually dethrones Megatron, he gets dethroned by Scorpinok and then Galvatron comes in and so on.
Alternatively Starscream is simply too hard to kill, Megatron has tried to kill him before, and generally doesn't even bother to seriously to kill him unless he makes him so pissed of that he forgets this fact.
Next Problem: As you said, they can't maintain a peacetime economy. It's been shown several times in expanded media, that the Autobots have a civilian population and the Cons do not. You're either a slave or a Decepticon. This means their economy is literally going to collapse on itself, if they ever find themselves without something to conquer.

If the Decepticons operate on a plunder economy, then the Autobots would lay siege to their entire nation by quarantining them, and the Decepticons would literally be starved into submission or complete collapse as their nation fragments into smaller nations that declare war on their neighbors to take as much as they could. This was probably how Megatron's predecessors were defeated, and he made sure that the Decepticons were on the winning team by making them almost impossible to contain.

My theory over why Megatron is so incompetent? Because his own subconscious has programmed himself to lose. Because he knows that if he ever wins, his reason to exist will stop. He is a machine built for war, therefore he must do everything in his power to ensure that war continues forever. So everytime he's on the verge of victory, he does something to cause himself to lose. He even keeps Starscream around as an act of self-sabotage. Megatron desires to keep the war going, but he can't acknowledge it to his conscious self, otherwise it would cause a mental breakdown.

Wouldn't it have made sense that they have a fleet of mailbot drones exactly like bumblebee? And since they're all drones they shared a hivemind sort of theoretically right? They've lived for millions of years, and in theory could live for billions more. Maybe, gazing into the abyss of such a vast amount of time, they realized that the true challenge of their existence will be to ever find a way to fill so many years. How will they ever find meaning? How will they hold off boredom and ennui for century after century after century? With an endless war and constant petty drama, that's how. Of course they interrupt their battles to give melodramatic speeches and always conveniently fail to finish things off - the whole point of the war is to make themselves feel relevant in the face of uncaring eternity.

That doesn't matter though, not in the new canon. They had won, the Federation was going to surrender and make Zeon a legitimate sovereign nation. Then Kacylia let Revil go, and he blew the whistle that Zeon was exhausted after their first push and would lose if they kept up.
If you don't blame it on Char's sabotage, Kacylia surely gets the blame. Char killing Garma basically took the fight out of Degwin anyhow. Then bloody Gihren blows up half their fleet at a time of dire need, and gets killed by Kacylia. The whole family was trying to run their own master-plan for domination.
And that secret gambit pile-up snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, hands down. They also punished the actually capable officers, since they feared losing power to them. But the whole thing is just the story of how WWII went, but in space. :V

      Yeah that’s a common debate
Currently the theory is the 8 constructions created decepticons such as megatron but where pretty neutral and had a friendship with omega supreme unfortunately megatron unleashed a device on 6 of them that can reprogram cybertronians (this is shown in the show in the secrets of omega supreme) and this gave them the power to combine and ended up fighting omega supreme before they went into space and crash landed on earth before the ark did (similar to jetfire/skyfire while omega supreme attempted to follow them
Around the tube if heavy metal was the constructicons ship was found but the crash destroyed there bodies in a way that made repair near impossible so instead megatron rebuilt them using earth materials (as shown by the lack of cybertonian decay in desertion of the dinoboys) somewhat similar to how starscream resurrected the combaticons

True Megatron is a classical theatrical villain and it is a question if he may be just as clichéd or even worse than Ming.
The comic though is/was superior in that it evolved and aged better than the cartoon.
Transformers the movie was clearly a culmination as it was daring in killing off so many characters popular ones at that...
