    Few people mention his nastiest crime. Richard wanted the crown to pass to his nephew, Arthur of Brittany. The boy disappeared without explanation while he was John's prisoner.

      Richard couldn’t speak English. John one of the first, possibly the first who could. Magna Carta was for the barons, not the ordinary folk.

    King John, contrary to popular belief, had beautiful handwriting.Just before he died, the late King wrote a letter releasing 600 Welsh archers. The Magna Cara has been copied around the world, and I believe formed part of the Bill of Rights
    of America.

    • @EvelynEdwards
      @EvelynEdwards  5 месяцев назад +2

      Bill of Rights as well as state constitutions! I don’t know that there is any belief about John’s writing ability that has ever been question. Mostly just his ability as a military leader and king. 💚

    Many kings have been maligned unjustly by history because they went against the grain of the power structure. Edward II and Richard III are also considered "bad" kings, but many historians now believe that many of the stories told about them are distortions or lies.

    • @EvelynEdwards
      @EvelynEdwards  5 месяцев назад +2

      Indeed it’s true. There are people that think Henry VIII wasn’t bad either. Edward II’s image was rehabilitated quite quickly after he died.

    I tend to believe the stories about how bad John was. ( Didn't he starve to death the wife and son of one of his enemies, William de Braose?)
    However, he may have been abused. When he was born, his parents' marriage was faltering. He was dumped in a French monastery, I think Fontevraut. He ever afterwards hated French clergymen, and I suspect he was abused; that may explain many of his attitudes.
    But he seems to have a softer spot for English clergy.
    William the Conqueror had got rid of many of the Saxon clergy; in all fairness the then Archbishop, Stigand, had been consecrated by an antipope and they were not canonical. But one of the greatest Bishops we've ever had, St Wulfstan of Worcester, canonically consecrated in 1063, survived to 1095. His greatest achievement was, together with Lanfranc, the then Archbishop of Canterbury, to persuade William the Conqueror to ban slavery, a ban which has remained with us ever since, despite Charles II's return to the slave trade. ( When slave-owners started to bring their slaves to Britain, abolitionists forced the Lord Chief Justice to acknowledge that slavery had no place in English law in 1772.)
    King John's will - panickily arranging for prayers for the starved wife and son - asked that he should be buried near St Wulfstan. He had attended St Wulfstan's canonisation ceremony in 1204.
    His paranoia - needing to know the reason for any suspicious death - led to the founding of the post of Coroner.
    As a child - I don't know when - I remember seeing his thumb.
