Few people mention his nastiest crime. Richard wanted the crown to pass to his nephew, Arthur of Brittany. The boy disappeared without explanation while he was John's prisoner.
King John, contrary to popular belief, had beautiful handwriting.Just before he died, the late King wrote a letter releasing 600 Welsh archers. The Magna Cara has been copied around the world, and I believe formed part of the Bill of Rights of America.
Bill of Rights as well as state constitutions! I don’t know that there is any belief about John’s writing ability that has ever been question. Mostly just his ability as a military leader and king. 💚
Many kings have been maligned unjustly by history because they went against the grain of the power structure. Edward II and Richard III are also considered "bad" kings, but many historians now believe that many of the stories told about them are distortions or lies.
Thanks again Evelyn. Oh my God I just read your biography. In my watch list besides about 50 of your videos, is the the Irish National Opera production of Salome by Richard Strauss which will be streamed on the Operavision channel tomorrow.
Evelyn! Your amazing with all of your knowledge and your presentation! I have learned so much by watching your Videos ! I am so amazed at how many Royals and Castles you have talked about ! BBC should have a show on your videos ! I enjoyed Sister Wendy Becket so much ! You could do the same format as Sister Wendy did ! Blessings from Michigan !
Thank you so much Marjorie!!! We feel so privileged to be able to go to so many places and learn about all the people of our past. Thank you for coming along with us!
I tend to believe the stories about how bad John was. ( Didn't he starve to death the wife and son of one of his enemies, William de Braose?) However, he may have been abused. When he was born, his parents' marriage was faltering. He was dumped in a French monastery, I think Fontevraut. He ever afterwards hated French clergymen, and I suspect he was abused; that may explain many of his attitudes. But he seems to have a softer spot for English clergy. William the Conqueror had got rid of many of the Saxon clergy; in all fairness the then Archbishop, Stigand, had been consecrated by an antipope and they were not canonical. But one of the greatest Bishops we've ever had, St Wulfstan of Worcester, canonically consecrated in 1063, survived to 1095. His greatest achievement was, together with Lanfranc, the then Archbishop of Canterbury, to persuade William the Conqueror to ban slavery, a ban which has remained with us ever since, despite Charles II's return to the slave trade. ( When slave-owners started to bring their slaves to Britain, abolitionists forced the Lord Chief Justice to acknowledge that slavery had no place in English law in 1772.) King John's will - panickily arranging for prayers for the starved wife and son - asked that he should be buried near St Wulfstan. He had attended St Wulfstan's canonisation ceremony in 1204. His paranoia - needing to know the reason for any suspicious death - led to the founding of the post of Coroner. As a child - I don't know when - I remember seeing his thumb.
I think John did some pretty horrible stuff. Did he do worse than everyone else 🤷🏼♀️. I wish they still had the thumb bone on display!! They don’t anymore 😫
He was awful. Had his nephew Arthur killed and imprisoned for life his young niece Eleanor, the Fair Maid of Brittany and that is only some of the things he did.
I hate to say it, but yup, I sadly had the same thought. The only thing protecting us is the Constitution and he wants that to end. Luckily he's so old he's not going to hang around too long.

Yesssss! I Mention this when teaching and doing lives.
Richard couldn’t speak English. John one of the first, possibly the first who could. Magna Carta was for the barons, not the ordinary folk.

You’re a great storyteller and an excellent narrator.

Indeed it’s true. There are people that think Henry VIII wasn’t bad either. Edward II’s image was rehabilitated quite quickly after he died.
I often wonder how both Henry and Eleanor would've reacted if they'd been around long enough to see John lose it all...
Henry wouldn’t have let it happen. He would have shoved John out of the way methinks.
What a gorgeous building!!
Worcester cathedral is stunnnnnning isn’t it?!
I'm jealous! I would love to see all these places you've made videos of. ❤
This content is awesome, thanks Evelyn, cheers!

Very good video! I didn't realize they were doing bloodlettnig in the early 1200s. Somehow, I thought the bloodletting started about the 1500s.
Ohhh no. Much earlier. 🙂 thank you so much Diana! 💚

King Richard the Lionheart's Brother John.
Nice video. Beautiful church. Catastrophic King!

I feel bad for John. Bad King or not he still deserved to rest in peace with his remains intact. Thank you for the interesting video.
Thank you friend! Yep. A whole lot of tomb opening in the Georgian and Victorian era!!
About 60 years ago I went on a school trip to Worcester cathedral and I remember they had king John thumb bone on display in a glass case !!!!
Did they actually have it on display then!! Amazing! They don’t anymore. 💚💚
I've been a lot of times over the years but I remember it if it was yesterday ! The thumb bone had silver band around the bottom of it
@@mauricebate5069 it does! There is a picture of it on the thumbnail of the video.
There was only one King John in the UK. This makes this king easier for me to remember. He was a Plantagenet.
Yes and yes. 😉
There was also a King John of Scots too. John "Lackland" was only king of England the UK did not yet exist

If his hands were gone how did they get a thumb?
1) it was opened several times and things were taken each time. 2) hands are not thumbs 😉✋🏻
