Hes a pioneer. Out on his own. Nuff said. You got some other mad artists but they do their own thing too. Others like Fourtet, Amon Tobin, Autectre, Aphex Twin, Death Grips, Allflaws
Yo this guy is so inspiring bro I swear. He just goes to show that you should never worry about becoming famous, or doubting your own natural talent. If you like something, and you know for sure that you can do it and your good at it, then by all means make time to do that shit and perfect it. Don't worry about what people say or what they think, in the end, the number one person who needs to be satisfied is you
I would say Dilla too but I'm p sure he doesn't negate that at all. It's just that when he began to gain his own sound ppl did rip him off. That's just a fact.
I feel what your saying, its just that when he gets into the trance type feel like in recoiled, thats all him and adding more and more to the momentum of the song...
I think both the interviewer and him were addressing his popularity due to adult swim and how many people try and copy success. My guess is that he understands he stands on the shoulders of giants, to be cliche.
I doubt somebody as humble and knowledgeable as him would think that he is the pioneer of interesting, instrumental beat music. He definitely brings a lot of new stuff to the table and some of his characteristics can be found in new artists of this genre. Some of those artists, I would say, are ripping off his sound or at least being very blatant about their influences. It's not like he's saying that Dilla stole his sound or something ridiculous.
Fly-lo's origin is from hip-hop/rap... but he is broadening his overall sound from just wonky beats/hip-hip to jazz/classical/electronica... especially with Cosmogramma and Until the Quiet Comes, you can definitely and tangibly feel the influences from alice coltrane and john coltrane... he's been experimenting with intricate melodic structures, polyphonic/homophonic structures, and he's been using LIVE INSTRUMENTATION from Austin Peralta and Thundercat...
following that logic, the names you listed did what had been done before them too, and so on. nonetheless, flylo has a trademark sound/feel that can almost always be recognized as his. the same goes for every artist.
That last line hits hard no really that shits deep hahah I'm suckin at school n getting horrible grades, but why? Cuz I'm busy writing lyrics and sampling! I cannot fail hhaa true shit just do what you love easy as that
@IrocChevy350 I agree with you, but there's nothing wrong with wanting money and fame, if that's someone's motive then that's fine. The main key is to keep your artistic integrity, always make the shit pure and as real as possible and never let anyone or anything force you to change your ideas just for other people's pleasure.. If a mainstream artist made dope music and kept their artistic integrity in tact I'd still respect them (but not many do lol).
@KClifton84 yeah man i hear you im surprised he even cares. he probably doesnt. have you listened to Amon Tobin's Saboteur and Flying Lotus's Camel back to back? I suggest you do it. It's fun. I can't help but smile when I hear the Aynsley Dunbar drums. And all you cats stop talking about how hes the next Dilla or something like that. Dilla is/was Dilla. I'm sure Dilla is one of his many inspirations and you can hear it in his earlier beats, but Dilla is just one of many inspirations.
"Truth be told" it doesn't matter how long ago you posted this you're dead fuckin wrong sir. Los Angeles is one of the greatest pieces of music I've ever heard as a whole and it's changed the way I hear and think about music for good ever since. You're talking about a guy who's influenced an entirely new sound, just as your obvious go-to examples have, acting as if he might be getting to that level, he's already been there. Get to know man, won't do any harm.
If youve done DMT, then you know his songs are perfect for the trip! I actually came across flying lotus when I was making a good playlist to trip to! lol
i don't think so man, i've felt even more beauty and integrity listening to flylo tracks than i have with boards of canada or aphex twin (they are all amazing though). his sound is more accessible, i've gotten headaches form listening to too much boc and aphex. also where did you get the idea that he had a huge ego? just wondering, from watching interviews he seems very humble..
@kclifton84 naw flying lotus is influenced by alot of people. ESPECIALLY DILLA. but he is truly truly on a different path man. and yeah i think alot of people do borrow from him. but whos to say that everything we do isnt a mass collection of shit we experienced compiled into what we CALL original.
his ego is alright, his roots are in hip hop where ego is part of the game. as for aphex and boards, flylo is easily on their level if not higher at his best, both in terms of emotion and maturity (although I don't see how aphex is mature lol).
aphex and BOC on the level classical musicians? lol. not even close; as for flylo, many people are moved by his music. just because you aren't, doesn't mean others aren't. first of all his ego is not that massive, and everybody has one. he never claimed to be a Buddhist monk either. you have different types of music, songs can have different structure and length, it's all about what you dig in the end i guess.
hes a really nice dude, i stopped and said hi to him at a festival and he took the time to have a chat and chill. inspiring work!
Hes a pioneer. Out on his own. Nuff said.

Wow. I didn't expect Allflaws in this list. (He's my mate) You've got taste ;-)

He is hands down one of my favorite people ever
good luck to anybody that tries to bite flyo's style now.. he has evolved
the track at the end is a nice throwback to the title track of 1983. this is the best flying lotus video on youtube. good job.
someone please make a Flying Lotus Church. we can all get high and worship his music
Flying Lotus is a king. Clock Catcher gets me head-nodding profusely each time.
got a chance to see flylo twice so far, both times were some awesome shit, one in a club and one outside on a stage.
man i love this guys music so much
i listened to cosmogramma six times on repeat high yesterday. so incredible..
To be fair he bit Madlib starting out too we all gotta start somewhere
FrankieStrings word
more like Dilla
I would say Dilla too but I'm p sure he doesn't negate that at all. It's just that when he began to gain his own sound ppl did rip him off. That's just a fact.
.. beat music is the contemporary hip hop thing.. don't sleep!! FlyLo iz the ambassador of the new revolution!! Big Up all the time!! Peace
Such a huge inspiration.
i want mf doom and lotus!
in my opinion, nobody has done what he has accomplished. He basically makes jazz from scratch, with drips of hip hop...
He Got the difficult vibes inside !!!
I feel what your saying, its just that when he gets into the trance type feel like in recoiled, thats all him and adding more and more to the momentum of the song...
Definitely wouldn't doubt it. New album has a track called "DMT Song"
I think both the interviewer and him were addressing his popularity due to adult swim and how many people try and copy success. My guess is that he understands he stands on the shoulders of giants, to be cliche.
flying lotus is fucking genius.... GOD DAMMNN
This guy is the man

That last line hits hard no really that shits deep hahah I'm suckin at school n getting horrible grades, but why? Cuz I'm busy writing lyrics and sampling! I cannot fail hhaa true shit just do what you love easy as that
