It's actually good for children's development to interact with people at an early age. It help builds confidence and helps with anxiety later on.
As someone who used to be one of those kids, I can say that I was definitely overwhelmed with the options and the prospect of customizing my own sandwich because I was used to just picking one item off of a menu from a resteraunt or just literally telling the waiter the number of the item I wanted. And the entire time I was just constantly trying to read the options with my little child mind that just learned how to read as well as worrying that I was taking too much time and that I was being judged by both the worker and the people in line waiting for this small child to customize an entire sandwich and I just ended up going with the first things that the person told me. Like I would ask "what breads are there" and the first option they gave me I would just remember that one only and tell them that one and repeat for the cheese and sauce. Now every time I go to a subway I have to look up the menu before hand to memorize what I wanted to order so when I do order I would look like a regular who knew how to order subway.
oof
mans be writing a full on essay
I look up the restaurants menu online and write down what I want. (what kind of bread, cheese, sauce, meat.....etc) and then bring the paper with me when I get to the restaurant. There is a cafe in my city which I absolutely love, but I am not familiar with their menu items. (bad memory) I also have trouble seeing the far away board behind the counter, even with my glasses. So bringing the paper helps the person behind the counter not get annoyed with me, keeps the people waiting behind me from getting annoyed that I am taking too long, and it also lowers my anxiety level because I came prepared beforehand. I also have a second option in my mind, in case they ran out of my first option. (I hate when that happens!)
This is me hahaha

It’s a really good lesson for the child (and I’m saying that as an introvert who hated it as a child). You’re teaching them the different cheeses/breads etc, but also helping their confidence in talking to random adults so take your time with them and be supportive - even show them the different breads if there’s no queue or make a comment to say “a lot of people like xyz type” to help.
yea im not a social kid but if i get told to order i order the BEST thing (that ik what it is like bread i have no clue i just know bread is bread so i just go "what ever u reccomend")
You don’t need to be a extrovert to know that certain social activities can be good
Kids were honestly my favorite customers in Subway, they'll usually just order a 6 inch ham with mayo, or something small and simple, and they are always so sweet and polite in my experience.
Very Sus

I remember one time I had this young girl ordering with her mom, her mom was pretty strict and just told me what she wanted for her kid but the kid actually wanted to try something new so I did the normal order but if the kid wanted to try something I'd let her try, I would put it in a bowl to the side and let her try it as we were ordering.
In the end she actually tacked on some extra stuff she would normally not get like Mango and Seaweed. Hope to see her again she was the sweetest thing.
Ps. The mother was not at all mean or anything, I know what it's like to buy a kid something and have them not like it so I don't blame her for not wanting to take that risk.
To buy a kid 🧐
I’m assuming you work at another store with the same sort of ordering concept then since you said “mango and seaweed” which is definitely not at subway.
Yep that’s me
Where did you work that had mango and seaweed as an option?
Whoops, should've cleared up that currently I work at a Poké restaurant.
I have a lot of experience dealing with kids in a "build your own" situation. What usually works for me is to narrow down the choices for them and guide them to stuff that'll be in the typical wheelhouse for their age range. If they don't like the choices, they'll usually suggest another option. It'll probably even be something on the menu :D
It usually goes like this:
you, once the parent okays the size: what kind of bread do you want?
kid: uhhhhhhh
you: we have plain white bread or cheddar bread
kid: plain white!
you: what kind of sandwich?
kid: uhhhhhhhhh
you: i can do ham or turkey for you
kid: turkey!
you: any cheese? we have american or cheddar
kid: the yellow one! [american]
you: do you want vegetables on your sandwich?
kid: NO!
you: any mayonnaise, mustard, or ketchup?
kid: can i get mustard and ranch dressing?
you: y-yes.
kid: and toast that bitch well done
It’s confidence building. I have done it with all 3 of my kids, the feeling after ordering their sub is like a massive achievement & makes them enjoy it more. I will stand there & help prompt on things like bread etc obviously. Also if the server says like ‘good job buddy you done good’ for example at the end it just makes their day.
🥺
Yah but it's mad annoying
If I was a parent, I would let them try doing this if there weren't any people behind us because I don't want to make other people wait so my kid could practice, as I would also find it to be annoying in that situation. Other than that, I would let them go right ahead! The sooner they learn, the better.

teaching the kid real world at any age will help his social skills for future interactions
I think alot of us have been there. Its definitly a teaching moment for children. You have to get them socialized and used to certain interactions for the real world. I remember my mom making me order at subway when i was 6. Another part of it is teaching kids commerce and buisness. I was to pay, count the change, get reciept, figure out the tip - mom used to be a waitress - and it definitely made an impact.
All that at 6? I feel thats a bit young for all that
My parents as well. Not only that but also kind of teaches you stranger danger and how to deal with adults. Especially if there aren't that many around you
the subway employee probably wanted to kill themselves after that
It depends on the when and were

Yes, however subway seems quite complex compared to choosing one or two flavours of ice cream or getting a predetermined order like "400 grams of ground beef". It could help to determine the order together before going up to the counter.

It made my hole weak
The way he speaks in his little kid voice...
It reminded me of a painful and awkward memory from one of my vacation trips to Santiago de Chile (since I'm Chilean living in the South)
I'm autistic and I was not really good at speaking back in the day.
In one of the trips to Santiago de Chile, we went to a mall and to a McDonald's to eat something.
And the combination of my autism, being a social incompetent, the choice paralysis, and not helping that my mom forced me to talk and to choose my own meal (and no, no Happy Meal allowed. Also she used to be scary, thankfully not anymore)
I studded my order which was a Italian McChicken.
It was not a good day...
Thankfully I can talk more confidently and to order my meals, but I occasionally suffer of choice paralysis whenever we go to the mall. Not adding that I'm in constantly thinking about the price of stuff, and the guilt of ordering something expensive. Also that I really love food.
Sorry.
