Gerber Center-Drive VS Leatherman Surge: Comparison Review
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 11 окт 2024
- This is my comparison of the Gerber Center-drive multi-tool to the Leatherman Surge. The Center-drive appears to be tailored more for a mechanic or technician. The average DIY may appreciate the this tool though. The lack of certain tools narrows its flexibility as an "All-round tool", i.e. can opener, saw blade, scissors, wire strippers, strand wire cutters, wire crimpers. So what follows is a comparison with my current multi-tool (Leatherman Surge and Wave) and Gerber Center-line Multi-tool.
As mentioned in the unboxing and review videos, I plan to return the Gerber Center-line for repair or replacement, based on workmanship issues (total of 3 issues; pry bar chipped (?) corner edge, center-drive bit holder slant cut at opening (?), x-channel guide block burred at corner), whatever option Gerber elects based what they determine to be best course of action. Bottom line what I expect is quality right out box. Overall I still like the layout of the tool. The center-drive is a vast improvement over my earlier Gerbers (yes I own two of them) so I'm familiar with Gerber. So when the Center-drive was made available, I needed to check it out to see if it was my replacement for my Leatherman Surge that I use at work.

Thanks. Peace.
I have the Center Drive and love it for the tools I need most when I don't have the regular tools for doing certain tasks with. The extension for the Center Drive was the main reason I purchased it and then the knife blade length which was the largest at the time. The tool can be used around home, working on my lawn and garden equipment, and also on my automobiles.
i know I'm kind of randomly asking but do anyone know a good site to stream new tv shows online ?
@Markus Kelvin flixportal xD
@Atticus Langston Thanks, I signed up and it seems like a nice service =) I appreciate it !
@Markus Kelvin no problem xD
I recently purchased a new Leatherman Surge, and I have no regrets.
That's good to hear
the surge has a large flathead which I use as a prybar works quite well for opening paint etc. and you can also just use the pliers to pull nails.
Gadget Survivalist, your review is a breath of fresh air. You aren't obnoxious (even when answering incredibly stupid/insulting comments and/or questions), and you convey a lot of knowledge in a solid and informative way. I appreciate your info AND the way you deliver it in an unbiased manner. I "liked" this review and I subscribed to your channel.
Bravo! You are one of the BEST presenters, regardless of topic! I'm looking forward to more of your videos!
Thank you for your comments and support
Great review, much appreciated. Think I'm gonna go with the Surge.
Excellent choice! However, you may want to check it out first, before buying, since it is a bit on the heavy-side -- Just be aware of that. I have no problem with mine.
I just learned some things about my Leatherman I didn't know, great video. I have a Leatherman surge along with the bits, added a small mini ratchet and a Victoria Knox Swiss Army champ. Those are the only two multi tools I will ever buy. 30+ years doing carpentry has taught me to always buy the absolute best the first time around and only buy one. I also bought the Victoria Knox Swiss Army rescue knife which is really cool
Thanks for the comment
The Surge can also can use Bosch saw bits where the saw and file attachment goes. Bosch blades allow greater cutting power and for a wider variety of materials maximizi.ng the utility of the Surge. The Center drive cannot do this. The Leatherman bit set contains an eyeglass screwdriver bit. This is not designed to be used on the new Surge ( on the old design yes), but it can be cleverly used on the new one if you know what to do. The vid for this is on RUclips. All the Gerbers I've ever owned had inferior steel compared to Leatherman. The fit and finish for Gerbers are generally less precise than Leatherman. The feel of the quality of any Leatherman just makes it a pleasure to own.
You are right about the Bosch: I mentioned about it in my Surge Review video at 1:38 --> ruclips.net/video/pQenb422HR8/видео.htmlm38s Re: Bit kit, I just finished recording -- coincidence. lol. At this point, I don't need the small bit in my Surge, but I got curious how to fit the tiny bit in Surge... I have a couple of old Gerbers too. Retractable plier head of old Gerber is much firmer. Why Gerber decided to use more plastic!? -- I just wonder. I agree with your last comment. I use Leatherman too (Surge.) Thank you for your comments.
Craig Mosolowski thanks for the info,i knew their was one you could replaced the sawblades but i wassent sure, now i know
Craig Mosolowski p
The prybar/Bottle opener is also a can opener! And it works great!!
I enjoyed your detailed compare and contrast implement comparison. Great analysis, thank you sir.
your welcome
I have a Gerber Center Drive multi-tool and love it so much even though it was not to be used just for survival usage. The tool is designed to be used by machanics, hobbyist, or survalists, and that is what I love about it. The Leatherman is a nice tool, but after some thought and listening to others who own them I decided on the Gerber brand instead.
Sidney Mathious Good Luck..
Bad choice
The Gerber design is top-notch IMO... but their workmanship still lags significantly behind Leatherman. And for that matter, Gerber is also lagging behind Victorinox as far as build quality goes. I wish Gerber would invest more in their build quality, I would be willing to pay more personally as I think their R&D and functionality is top-notch.
I have had a Gerber MultiPlier 800 Legend for ages. I was hoping to replace it with something that has replaceable 1/4" bits. The Center-Drive Plus looked clever and promising.
But then I see Gerber still use those absolutely worthless (too small, too dull to cut anything soft, too brittle to cut anything hard) little carbide cutter bits. And unlike my old MP800 I would have to open the handles to reach most tools, and then close them again to use them! I'd have to change bits just to use a flat or phillips screwdriver, there are no screwdriver blades. There's no saw or saw blade holder, and there's no can opener - I'd still have to bring the trusty but delicate and heavy Swiss Champ when camping. Of course I want scissors, but then I'd have to buy the Plus version of Center-Drive, and as a bonus the tool would lose that useless serrated knife blade, but then they have put annoying serrations on half the proper blade - idiots!
Also, it seems like the Center-Drive only comes with e.g. hex bits in that utterly mongoloid imperial system. And weird little square bits? WTF? I already have imperial size tools in the boots of my old British cars, I and everybody else need metric tools for everything else, like my bike which is where a multitool comes in handy!
I'd keep the MP800 and combine it with my Swiss Champ (although it's a heavy combination), but the MP800 knife blade and all the screw driver blades are broken. Even though the tool is made to easily be screwed apart, Gerber insist I send the whole thing across the Atlantic for "repair" instead of just selling these commonly broken parts separately.
And the Leatherman multitools that look interesting and aren't 2 kg lumps of solid steel don't even have sprung pliers. And/or require the handles to be opened to access individual tools. Goddamnit. Do American tool makers still live in the seventies?
Thank you for the great video. I'll stick with my Leatherman Surge, Charge and Wave. The size and weight of center drive matches the Surge... I'd be sacrificing half of the tools on my Surge for the center drive and flick pliers.
Your welcome !
Excellent review. Very detailed the way I would like it. It helped cement my decision when replacing my lost 20 yr. old M-T. This review with a couple others like the one showing the SOG near equivalent and it’s spring wearing out and thus not holding the knife or saw back in place is a BIG no-no /issue for SOG. So now I’ve just purchased a Surge. Even though it’s heavier or bulkier or more manual to operate than others, for the long term, it is a solid product through and through and could well last me my lifetime; my intention. And when Gerber makes it difficult to understand what is its M.O.C., that’s even more reason to trust a brand like Leatherman. Thank you again 🏆
Reach out to Leatherman's Customer Service, I've actually use them for assistance and even returned my Surge for repairs at no cost. They actually replaced it with a NEW surge instead for quick turn-around. Be advise they do have on-line form you'd fill-out for service and the one of the questions was something if your Leatherman HAS ANY sentimental value to you. Cost wise is shipping and handling hope this is helpful.
@@gadgetsurvivalist3986 Thank you. Just by chance I once called Leatherman and they call from start to finish was positive and professional. 👍🏼
Very helpful review, my friend! I've been saving up to get a Leatherman Surge, but I think I will pick up the Center-Drive instead. I find myself needing a bitdriver almost daily, and I like the layout of the one on the Center-Drive a bit better, as well as the interchangeability with standard 1/4 bits.
What I've found with the Serge is you can open the pliers half way when you are using the screw driver so you can multiply the leverage
The more you use it, you'll be surprised what things you can use.
check out your removable saw/file. The blade holder will accommodate Bosch Jigsaw blades, of course, some jigsaw blades are long, so you can't fold the jigsaw blades into the Surge. The plus you now have additional cutting blades, however, the blades will be a bit loose in the holder, but it will work, just be careful about blades breaking due to flexing.
Great comparison, very thorough, and well presented. Excellent video. Thank you.
Thank YOU for your comment!
Thank you Gadget for the review, it is clear and unbiased and short engough. thank you so much!!!! ( Leatherman kicks ass BTW)
Your welcome!
It’s perhaps ironic that the gerber tool prominently says made in USA. Gerber is owned by a foreign company I believe, while Leatherman is made in USA and owned by an American company
You're correct, play on words "made" should be "assembled"
Also the cut on the CD arm is the design, not a cut flaw because I have the same cut on mine, it's simply the design.
The knife steel is 420HC for the center drive
Should really have compared this to the Leatherman OHT. The rattly thing on otf pliers sorta comes with the territory. Of course it's gonna appear weak against a solid standard MT like the Surge.
It's been a while, but I believe Gerber did that comparison with the OHT, what Gerber focused on was the blade size (longer) along with having a lever, and of course a full-size driver tool, no doubt Gerber CD blade is longer than the OHT. However, I believe Leatherman was attempting to appeal to everyone in general, no specific trades, as MTs evolved MT manufacturers needed to keep pace the expanding demands from all facets i.e. Military, automotive, heavy equipment, outdoor enthusiasts, etc. Lastly, ALL MTs are going to have their individual weak points, it just what knowing the limitations of the MT. Thank you for your comments.
That's all very good but why not show us how you open the Surge pliers with one hand? There is nothing wrong with the Leatherman tools but the Gerber is a solid choice too. I don't have the Center Drive but my 30 year old Gerber has seen a lot of use and abuse and has outlived a couple of nice Leatherman multi-tools along the way. Not hammering the LMs, just saying that Gerber has been a great tool and the main reason I chose to take it with me most days for so many years is that I only need one hand to get to the pliers. It's not a one trick pony but one hand opening is a really good trick and sort of overshadows the rest. Maybe I am a belt and suspenders guy but I still put some range time in strong and weak hand only shooting and reloading drills too. So as an old guy I can safely tell you that the Leatherman pliers are not like "real" pliers just because they are integral to the frame. Rather, the Gerber pliers are like "Real" pliers in that it only takes one hand to slip them out of a belt sheath and use them to grab stuff.
Nice vid though, I am a new subscriber...
I own and use both, however I use my Surge as an EDC at work. I've used my Gerber (Center-Drive)at work too. No contest with one hand operation for the Gerber, being a mechanic I can appreciate the handiness of it. Working the Aerospace Industry military and civilian for a lot years the Surge is like a "mini" tool box, granted it has some tools many folks may not use at all, The Center-Drive does have a few limitations, and nothing wrong with belt and suspenders either and glad to hear you still put range time too.
John Burr The only Gerber multitool I have, is the Crucial. It is decent, knife works well enough, but it lacks tools and features I use. The two multitools I use the most, are my Leatherman Wave and a Victorinox Spirit, both with their respective bit and too kits. I’ve been reading up on multitools, and in many places people complain any quality control issues on the Gerber Center-Drive, such as the tool breaking under torque.
You can open the LM pliers with one hand like a butterfly knive.
I can deploy the pliers in my leatherman surge like a butterfly knife,
I used to do that before turning into Leatherman for repairs. Now it's stiff and tight so I can't... lol
my dad do that too, it looks cool af!
takes a lot of working in to get a leatherman that loose!
I have owned my Surge for almost 2 weeks and I have not regretted buying it. A bit heavy but so useful. In construction I want tools that are durable and can take some abuse. The Surge seems to fit that need need and more. The Centre-Drive on the other hand felt cheap. The use of plastic makes it look and feel cheap and breakable. And the sliding pliers, while cool looking and I can appreciate the engineering that went into it, seem like they would break under light use.
Glade to read about no regrets. Surge is very durable and heavy, having to work around support equipment, it's extremely handy. I carry mine 5 days a week (at work) and a Wave on weekends, now "breaking in" the Leatherman P4. Lighter than the Surge, easier to use, almost same weight as a Wave. Obliviously the heft is not there compared to the Surge, but still feels solid like a Surge I think....
I agree with your comments. for what it worth I kinda wore out my Surge and had to send it for repair i.e. plier jaw a bit loose and wire cutter chipped and dull (I had original Surge with one piece plier and wire cutter head) they replaced it with a New Surge with a replaceable wire cutter. Leatherman does honor their warranty and no i don't get any perts from them either for saying it.
As I watched this video I pulled my Centerdrive out of the pouch. I don't believe the "cut line" is actually a cut line unless they are all miscut. Mine has that same line and never noticed it until watching this video. seems like a nitpick that means nothing. Just my opinion, and is not intended to breed an argument. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Actually that "cut line" caught my eye as I handled mind, when I got it opened up. Maybe I was nitpicking, but when I purchase anything I expect a certain amount of quality and workmanship, it may not impact fit, form, function, just makes me wonder and I appreciate your comments too.
Gadget Survivalist “quality” is in the eye of te beholder, sir. I personally don’t care for fit and finish of a leatherman when I can put hell of a lot more torque down on my gerbers and not worry, I’ve bent up and cracked up more than a few leathermans, just on regular use, I put my gerbers through hell and within my personal uses are quite resilient. The “play” you referred to in your video for the pliers is there from the slider rails, once you actually tighten down on them you have better grip than leathermans and the play completely subsides. And I don’t believe it was a “cut line” since every center drive I’ve seen has the little curve by the bit holder. I did like your video, very informative, and extremely thorough, just lacked one thing and that was heavy use shown, or maybe some form of “torture test” to see under what use which one is better. Keep up the good work and nice video!
He did show that he already tweaked his small screwdriver. This might prove your point.
Thank you for a very good and thorough job at reviewing the Surge vs the Center drive. I enjoyed your comparison with the Wave as well. My experience with Gerber as not been as enjoyable as with the Leatherman tools. I have a number of Leathermans (Super tool, Crunch, First Wave, PS, Juice (Yellow), Wingman (x2 - the absolute BEST value before the hike in price), Flair (the best wine opener bar none), a micra and a multitool pruner (I think its the one for duck hunting). With Gerber It has been touch and go for quality as I think they compromise on fit and finish to reach a certain price point. Leatherman makes a real long-nose plier that equals the best dedicated tools out there. Not so with Gerber who offer very stubby long noses. This one however seems to be a real effort at making a great bit screwdriver with additionnal features, and appears to be worth a look.
Thank you for the comment, I agree it's been touch and go. I've noticed that Gerber appears to be ramping up there efforts to cover ALL areas of the market, Likewise Leatherman is also, but at a conservative rate in my opinion to retain quality..
How are the Gerber's plyer strength? Can they grip as hard as the Surge? With my Surge I can grab and turn out a 3/8" x 4" lag bolt out of a 4x6. Can the Center-Drive do this or will the handles bend, because they look really weak
I own both, I personally prefer my centerdrive over my surge, I prefer how the pliers work on the center drive and I really like the bit driver on it also. My GCD also has that "cut line" you speak of, when talking to a Gerber rep about the tool, he said that is not a "cut line" it is a high side to aid in replacing the bits, they found cutting it on an angle made it a bit' easier to replace... Also I asked them what the material on the smooth knife is and he said its 420HC , I will say it stands up well and sharpens easy. I would love to see aus 8 replacement but not likely.
I hope this helps someone make their decision, we all have different preferences and priorities, I like the tool to not be too heavy, I use the driver, knife, and pliers most on my multitools and I like all 3 better on the center drive, the surge is a very capable tool also, but I think my biggest complaint about it was how much effort it takes to access its tools, sometimes MORE isnt better, if I am wearing gloves and need the driver, its a pita with the surge, where with the centerdrive, I can easily access it with 1 gloved hand, also I can do the same for the pliers, just flip the tool and they fly out and are ready to use, where my surge was a two hand job....
BOTH GREAT TOOLS...
Appreciate the feedback, especially about the "cut line", whoever I spoke with didn't know enough about the GCD. However, I see it as a "missed" selling point, especially if you're using it in low light condition, not totally in the dark.
I too own both but prefer the Surge over the GCD, like you said user preference and basically, that's what comes down to. besides, I believe the only other way to improve on any MT is making them lighter without driving the cost through the roof. Again thank for your feedback.
I have seen the Gerber plier claw broke on Amazon review
I know this is a 3yr old review but you forgot to mention that the Surge also comes with a saw blade, and that you can actually use jig saw blades in the saw blade carrier so that you can use them individually.
Actually I did cover the saw blade and the use of jig saw blades {Bosch brand}. However keep in mind the jig saw blades do vary in length are thinner, prone to flexing and may break on you if not careful
if the surge had a decent pry-bar, it would be the perfect multi-tool. that's the only thing i'm missing and have to carry a wenger watch case opener to compensate. at least the wenger case opener is thin.
Since I don't own a Wenger, unable to comment on it, As far Surge and pry bar issue, never really had a need for it (pry bar), If I did have a need for a pry bar I'll improvise when necessary
Large flat head I use for pry bar on my surge
this surge came out in 2013 .... do u know if there is going to be a newer one thanks
Unfortunately I don't work for Leatherman, so I'm unable to answer your question.
Great review. Surge it is! Thanks.
You're welcome! :)
Definitely go with the Surge. The Heavy Duty with extra bits and extension
I'll second that...
I really don't understand why someone would want the center drive. Catching myself one handed 90% of the time I need my mutlitool, would just piss me off having to open the Gerber, unfold it, get the tool I need, and then repeat the process backwards. Granted, you still have to open the surge for some tools, but your most commonly used items are readily available
Bit driver for standard hex bits is a standard function I think every multitool should have; unless it's a survival/bushmans version. The Leatherman are great, but the fact that their bits are proprietary makes it less of a multitool, and more of a specialized one.
There are so many multitools, but I which I could just put my own together.
You forgot that the surge file is changeable with the saw, but I might have missed it.
I was attempting tool to tool -- matching. Since Center-Drive doesn't have saw blade, I just didn't show it. At 8:25, I said "BTW this file blade in its place you can put saw blade. " But I should have mentioned clearly that Surge comes with a Saw blade which Center-Drive doesn't have. Thank you for your comment.
Leatherman Surge all the way...
SURGE WIN BY MILES
OK. No argument. lol
Actually if you go by stock and military use the centerdrive would win now if you can't see the favoritism then I'm sorry. Have MP 600 standard and a wave yes the leather man is better in this comparison in this case it comes down to preference. He commented about the wire cutter but did not include how the carbide would be better for the pier so it wouldn't break. Now the center drive is 420HC as well. Not to mention the action is smooth. Now as stated the military issue is the Gerber MP600 while leather man... Can't afford to give our trips they're quality. So you tell me a company who doesn't want o lose money or someone who can afford to lose some money and continue in today's business world.
Даже однорукие Р2 and P4 не могут победить Surge по функциональности!
Very thorough comparison. Thx
Thank you for your comment really appreciate it.
I bought a pro scout 600 many moons ago and find it lacked considerably against the surge...I would not waste money on gerber again for it's lack of function. It looks to be a slight improvement though, but needs scissors and saw to be something I would want. Leatherman all the way!!!
I have a similar Gerber (the one pretty similar to GB-7550, probably earlier version of it) with 7 piece bit kit. I agree with you: That's why my EDC since then is Leathermans (either Wave or Surge.)
I have a Leatherman Charge TTi, which has served me well over the last 2 years. I have never had any issues with it and have no complaints about it either, before this in my previous job I had a Leatherman Kick which I was trying to break so i could get a Leatherman Wave, because that´s what all the new guys got, but never managed to break it, I am sure if I took a sledgehammer and bashed on it it would break, but I had to make it look legit like it broke while working, but again I never managed to break it...which it also what really got me into leathermans and earned my trust and respect for them. I actually still have the old leatherman kick at home somewhere. Anyway, I have seen images of this and seen it for sale at a few outdoor shops, is this Gerber really as great as it is made out to be? ...should I get one or just stick with my old trustworthy Leatherman Charge TTI?
Wow no need to destroy your Kick. I'm sure it has served you well just like my "small collection" of Leathermans that I acquired over the years. I just retired them from EDC duties. At some point I'll probably hand them down to someone else family or friend
Don’t bother with the gerber, they are great if you can’t afford the premium price of a LM, but if you can, the LM will always last longer. I have 8 leathermans I’ve collected over the years, and even a couple gerber tools. The LM line of tools are just more ergonomic and offer better and stronger tools
I was going to buy the Surge but I already have a Wave. I did, however, buy the Center Drive and I totally love it. It does everything I want it to do and it's also way lighter than the Surge. I don't mind my multitools to be heavy, but when it's made out of soft steel and weighs like a brick in my pocket, I will not be paying ridiculous prices just for a Leatherman when Gerber multitools are military tough, well made, and more affordable. All my Leathermans sit in my tool drawer collecting dust. After "the bike Incident" and nearly breaking my ST300, I have been using only Gerber multitools and they have never failed me. I have the CD, MP600, and I just bought the Diesel which was only a few dollars more than the NXT and I love the black oxide coating on it. The Center Drive is my personal favorite because I can use ANY bit instead of wasting more money on proprietary bits which is Leathermans way of a quick, greedy, insidious, money grab on it's customers. Also, everyone I see who endorses Leatherman or say that it's such a great tool, obviously never put their Leatherman through daily, real, hard work. All their Leathermans and other tools are all nice shiny and clean. After waking up to the truth and experience, Leatherman is a joke, a gimmick that poor bastards would waste their hard earned money on!!! Had I've known any better, I could have saved hundreds of dollars and grief. I only have 4 Leathermans with bits, pocket clips, bit extender, so yeah it really does add up to a few hundred dollars well wasted!!!
Rice Villatoro “military tough” plastic.
It really just depends on how lucky you are LOL I have a gerber mp600 and the flat-head screwdriver Corner snapped off on a brass screw head no joke
Good review but couldn't finish the video because the camera focus issue, starting to get headache.
Need to work on it more and thanks for your input.
I have all the leathermans and looking really hard for an excuse to buy the centre drive. Still little success
Hahaha . I have the letherman surge end I am so happy . The letherman surge it is for hard work end EDC survival tool.
Thanks for honest review....
Thank you for your comment!
I have a centre drive and mp600, I think it does the job better than the leatherman. I found myself using the gerber more than leatherman because of ease of access to the tools.(the way it opens) even though I do have to say I think overall quality of the leatherman is better.
As long as the Center Drive fulfills your requirements is all that really matters. I've tried using my Center Drive at work and found it feeling "loose" or flimsy and went back to the Surge. Thank you for your comments...
Still undefeated. The leatherman
Believe me, I'm a Leatherman Surge and Wave user too, had to check out the center-drive, not really impressed with it. found it kinda loose too. boils down to individual need and application
Just curious, how would this compare to the leatherman mut? Thanks for the good comparison
MUT multitool (or are you talking about the MUT EOD?) is designed towards the military, law enforcement, and outdoor users, which is evident by the presence of a punch tool for weapon (AR-15/M-4/M-16 type weapons) disassembly. I wish I had MUT when I was in the Marines, would have made a rifle (M-16/M-16A1/M-16A2) cleaning a lot easier. So to answer your question: There's no comparisons. We are talking about apples and oranges now. Thank you for your comment!
Why would I need to put my pliers up and down? If I’m going to carry a multi tool it can take as much room as it needs. I bought the surge
Hey there, is there a noticeable difference between the knives? I have never used a multitool of any quality, how do these compare with midrange EDC knives like the delica? I don't really want to carry both.
from what I've been reading and in one video that serrated blade on the center drive is a joke , dull blade and not very sharp
I recommend carrying a knife paired with the multi tool. Multi tool knife blades are good, but nothing to write home about. They are good for your boxes, light wood work, etc, but having a dedicated pocket knife will always be superior.
how did you lose the tip of your pinky if you don't mind my asking? great vid btw
While stationed Hawaii many years ago, was told to "lend a hand" with a pallet jack, there were five of us unloading from a "comm" trailer attached to M151 Jeep, unfortunately, my hand became stuck in fork scissor, would loss two fingers but the docs managed to salvage one amputate the flatten portion of my pinky. needless to say I was a "bloody" mess that day.
@@gadgetsurvivalist3986 dang. yeah crushing injuries are no joke.
Well done Comparison
Thank you for your comment.
Center drive plus would have been a better comparison. Like it makes a difference anyhow.
i would enjoy opening the leathermans knifes out each time i would use them but gerbers it just so much extra steps of opening then getting ou the knife and locking it all back up again
Centre drive’s pliers are spring loaded, that’s a big feature for some.
The spring action of the pliers is convenient no doubt
The centerdrive contains her era mystery steel
Is it just me or does the saw open the wrong way on the centerdrive....
Hey I would like to buy a surge, of course I checked a lot of reviews from a lot of websites one of those was Amazon and I found some really negative reviews with photos of the surge rusty or even broken (it was a full priced one 169€ ), but every other single website says that it's very durable and I don't know what to do, does Amazon simply sell fake garbage??? Can anyone that actually owns or owned the knife give me advice plz????
Super studley video. great info seems unbiased too. i can make cases for owning both, but let's face it the center drive is way more boss looking...don't know if i could leave out the importance of a can opener and scissors in the surge, get both!
Funny thing is when the video was made, the intent was to return the center drive, however I still have it. try as I may just couldn't use the center drive for my EDC at work. Always defaulted back to the Surge....
Can anyone tell me the thickness of the centerdrive prybar at it's thickest point, down near the pivot point?
Gerber center drive is the strongest multitool I have.
Much more stronger and robust than my leatherman surge and my victorinox spirit.(I broke 3 times surge and is almost impossible to brake Centerdrive. The steel is harder and better heat treatment)
Except for the shamefully carbide cutters, CD is the best multitool for working environment.
Not so good as edc or camping outdoors.(no wood saw, no scissors)
But it Have fews tools and very goods.
Great video, was looking for this one

I have a sepinsoon I am looking at a supertool 300 or center drive or surge witch is best
I don't understand about 'sepinsoon.' However, let me guess what you want to ask.. I think you want to know which multitool is the best among Supertool 300, Center-Drive, or Surge. I think it depends on individual needs or requirement. Personally I cannot comment about Supertool 300 because I don't own it. Center-Drive and Surge I do own. And between the two I prefer the Surge. The Surge is more of a general purpose multi-tool. It covers a broad area of applications. So be aware. You may have some tools you may not use, however, there are available. And the Leatherman warranty, I have used, and found it very good.
Get your stepson a wave, if he plans to EDC it, or a surge if he needs something heavy duty. Don’t bother with the Gerber tools, and the super tool 300 is nice, but doesn’t offer a lot of tools, and non of them are one handed opening like the surge and wave
How to get this piece, how much Price INR
I have both. The Gerber is cheap rubbish when compared with the Surge. I would never buy another Gerber product based on my experience with this thing - whereas I was happy to purchase a small Leatherman pocket knife as recently as yesterday.
welcome to the club!
wait not to dis on your leatherman moistness, but why would you want a proprietary bit that doesnt work with 99% of the rest of your tools when you can just use regular bits? i mean yea you can buy a bit extender (indeed i would too, love leatherman but for someone that is always using regular sized quarter torx and square bits why would up want to have to use a bit extender? just food for thoughts.
As a mechanic, compactness, reduce bulk -- It has to do with keeping the weight down. Convenience to carry when I'm on the go. Sometimes carrying the tool box is not convenient. Thank you for your comments.
i just took my favorite standard bit extension and put it on a grinder for a few mins to make it fit the surge adapter. now I can use regular bits and didn't need to buy the leatherman one.
to me, the surge is better and feels more stable and solid
Welcome to the "club", that's usually the general feeling about the Surge.
too many steps on deploying your tools on the center drive, plus the play of the pliers does not ensue confidence in the hard use of the tool
I have to agree with what you are saying. However, deployment of the Plier head is quick! and you are right about the play in the Plier head. Appears sloppy (loose). Thank you for your comment.
I must be the only person that uses the screwdriver on the surge with it half opened like a L shape.
Way more.torque and it fits small places like.that too
Not really, I use mine at work quite often....
leatherman surge and center drive has same 18 featuredumy!
Leatherman Surge has 21 tools to center-drives 16, if in doubt please refer to both Leatherman and Gerber Websites for details
They're made in The USA, thats whats great about both tools.
I agree about 'made in the USA,' however, quality of workmanship separates them...
Surge is much better!!
No argument from me, although I do own several other multi-tools which include the Wave and consider it a "compact" version of the Surge.
Shouldn't this be vs oht?
It can be, however so many multi-tools on the market, makes it difficult to really compare. So it boils down to individual needs or requirements that would determine the multi-tool of choice. Quality, workmanship, practicality, functionality, size, weight, and cost.
Don't waste your money, get a Gerber MP600 or the Diesel. My personal favorite is the Center Drive because I can use any and all bits that I already own. I take things apart all the time. Leatherman is a Huge waste of money. The U.S. Military uses Gerber, Leatherman uses soft steel on its tools. Just read my comment down below!!!
Rice Villatoro i own the mp600 and i bought the surge after that. It’s a real pain in the ass to get your tools on the mp600. A shitty little knife. Every single details on the mp600 looks cheap and probably is. I’ll sell mine. Tell me if you want it. I’m way more happy with my surge
Military goes with the lowest bidder
Surge
My surge is nice l never go to work with out it but the Gerber is not bad
Whatever multi-tool you feel comfortable with gets the job done
I own the wingman it's a great handy little tool
Center Drive for the win!
OK!
maybe work with them both before you post a video?
MY victorinox cybertool better than all these. If I need something bigger I just use a dedicated wrench and what not.
I heard of it. If you are just dealing with computers, you want small tools, so Cybertool should be perfect. But if you are working on some larger projects, Cybertool may not be it tho? Thanks for your comment.
I know it all comes to personal preference but for me Gerber is junk and has been since the late 80s . And for leatherman I've had 6 different models over the years and not one has failed me . And I know your saying 6 of them ! Every couple of year they come out with a new and improved model and I get that itch and I pass the old one down to my son and get the newest model . ( somewhere in my son's room in a drawer hes got a Treasure Trove of all my old knifes !
Welcome to the "Club"
Wow dude... you must be paid by leatherman. I get all your criticisms of the gerber except you somehow ding them cuz they don’t accept leatherman bits?? Leatherman bits suck! They are half sized so if you really have to work them you will strip out the fastener cuz the fit isn’t all there. The full sized bits with the gerber are far, far, superior to the leatherman. Even if you have the leatherman bit adaptor. That’s extra cost wise and another thing to keep up with. As a technician the gerber is definitely the superior tool for everyday use. Customize your bits, maybe 8$? Have a tool that can take care of 90%of your jobs.
Nope ain't paid by Leatherman or any other outfit. Wasn't attempting to "ding" Gerber bits. I do use both types however I do recognize the physical limitations, yes I've managed strip or break on both types, and knowing that limitation, if I accomplish the job with what I have without going back to the toolbox that's that saves time and effort. Thank for your comment...
TheIndyabn "gerber is the superior tool" that gave me a good laugh. Leatherman is the standard that all multitool manufacturers try to measure up to.
Gerber is absolute trash! Why buy gerber's garbage? When you have quality choices out there like. 1) Victorinox's Swisstool X or Spirit. 2) Leatherman Surge, Supertool 300, wave or rebar. Even the Sog powerlock is head and shoulders above anything gerber makes.
No argument here, unfortunately curiosity got the best of me about Gerber Center-Drive....
it's impressive how much info you put in this review. Anyone researching info on what this multi tools have to offer would get everything they need to know here. Great job an thanks for posting.
You're welcome and thanks for the comments too.
To refer to your comment, I prefer Gerber, not that I don’t understand quality of a Leatherman, but the center drive is exactly what I need to work on my motorcycle, sure it’s not “as good of a quality” like most assume compared to a leatherman, but I’ve been able to crack leathermans many times over just using the pliers. referring to what leatherman makes, I don’t need a saw or half the things it actually comes with, my MP600 and center drive have worked for me many more times than leathermans have. Personally speaking, gerbers fit my needs a lot better and price is also a factor for me, I bought my mp600 for 30 dollars new in box and my center drive for 75 on some online sale. Rarely can I stumble upon a cheaper leatherman. But to succinctly answer your original question, “why buy gerber?” Because it does exactly what I need it to, nothing more and nothing less.
That's what I thought too when I got a gerber mp600 some 17 years ago as a gift. The metal looked cheap. But in those 17 years it didn't rust as much as my leathermans that were kept in the house and were maybe 2-3 years old. But when there was a stripped nut on my car and the leathermans (blast, wingman) couldn"t remove it as well as my regular plier, I reached for the mp600... it was able to just lock on it and turn it open. I was shocked the Gerber did what the others couldn't and have since viewed Gerber Multitools differently.
Both are crap like all multi tools they can do some tasks some what ,but not worth the weight or expense compared to a real tool. They may work to some extent in a pinch but can never replace the proper tools for the job.
I understand. I'm a mechanic by trade. Multi-tools are not exactly 'Real' tools. I consider them as 'back-ups.'
Spark Jumper, They are meant to be compact, they are a compromise to carrying all the individual tools themselves.
Ever consider how hard it would be to carry your toolbox deep into the outback? There is your answer. These aren't supposed to be shop tools, they are built for a specific purpose, that being handy, easy carry tool that can do a lot of jobs when you are out and about.
I am also a mechanic by trade, 20 years+, The multitool has a place in my pocket because it regularly saves me a trip back to the tool box for a little crisis here and there. I regularly use the serrated blade on my Surge or Wave to unplug Ford O2 sensors or other stuck items. I Recently took a roadtrip on the Harley with 2 other riders to the tune of several thousand miles and the Surge and bit driver saved us money and time on multiple occasions. So i always have one with me.
Spark Jumper you sound like someone with an inherent bias and little experience actually using these. As a trade professional I’ve used tools in the automotive and trucking industries, deep-sea diving and building maintenance. You are incorrect.
never cared for Leatherman
Thank for your reply..
I would use the bladeless mp600 or rebar instead; I carry a neck knife already anyhow.
