Hi Terry, Congratulations on your new boat. Getting grounded on your 1st trip is the best thing that could have happened. It shows you the stark reality of how dangerous sailing can be especially approaching the hours of darkness. If those winds changed and you had wind over tide you, could have easily ended up in a serious situation with the boat taking a heavy grounding and water. Don't compare your sailing journey to other people as they may have more free time than you. Its better to build your knowledge up progressively than in one hit that way it stays in your head. All the training days you did are good but you don't start learning until your on your own. Your going to suffer engine problems, tangled sails and more groundings. Its making sure you spares upon spares and keeping on top of maintenance and always carry a spare outboard a, radio & nav with a separate power supply that will get you out of a sticky situation. A few precautions can turn potentially dangerous situation into a minor inconvenience rather than having to call the RNLI. When I started out 10 years ago, the risks I took were utterly stupid looking back. I think as you get older and having kids makes me think twice about the days I go out in as well as what you enjoy. If you upset the wife by taking her out on a rough day get used to sailing solo 🤣

An amazing series of videos. I’m in exactly the same situation. I’ve owned a powerboat for a few years, but not have bought a sailing boat and feel like a complete novice (feel and am a novice!!). Your videos have been fantastic!! Keep them coming.

Terry, my girlfriend and I are very much newbies too so we're enjoying your content. We're working through our DS theory at the moment and are aiming to buy a 28ft BK in the autumn!
I'm from Hadleigh originally, and now live in Portsmouth, so it's great seeing what life on the water is like back home on the east coast. I was a Sea Scout in Leigh On Sea 20 years ago so we'll have to plan a trip over there eventually!
I notice that Dancing Bear is for sale on Apollo Duck so I hope that means the brokers are just being cheeky with adverts rather than you having it up for sale?
Good luck with your journey! We'll be following along.

No that’s the old add I can sure you she is not up for sale. Thank you for the comments and the follow it really helps. We are putting back in this Friday after two weeks of repairs but now she is completely ready for the season ahead. Keep in touch and good luck with the rest of the courses and look forward to seeing you on the water soon.

What kind of boat is it? Looks to me like an Alberg design. Known to be quite seaworthy!

I bought a trapper 500 just over a year ago from Suffolk Yacht Harbour just down the river from where you bought yours. I also had zero sailing experience. Went out with an instructor on my boat for a day then spent all last year sailing on my own up and down the river orwell. In November I passed my day skipper theory and practical using what I had learnt in the year. I have fallen in love with sailing and have already started upgrading/modifying the boat to my needs. Can't wait to see how the channel progresses. Nice to see another channel closer to home on the east coast.

@weboughtaboat2024 Will do👍🏼. We're still watching this film and it's got some fantastic information and great tips too. I agree with bilge keel yachts for the ease of drying out but heart is torn with the likes of a contessa. Either way we feel bilge keels offer best of both worlds. Have considered a lifting keel for the drying out thing and it's a possible consideration. Some sound advice in your film old chap, and thanks chap🫡😃👋
