I worked for two different French families, and you are right…it takes time and effort to build relationships. The men are appropriate and the women are kind. You are doing a great job standing up for the culture. I don’t watch Emily in Paris for intellectual stimulation nor accuracy, because it’s neither. I LOVE the fashion, the color, the gorgeous views, and the ridiculousness of it all. Should the producers and writers try harder? Yes, they should. But I’m not looking for reality…I’m looking to escape it.

I love Emily in Paris just the way it is and I think that if they changed any of it to tone it down or be more realistic it wouldn’t be as fun or desired to watch. It’s just entertainment and not meant to be a true representation of Paris and the French culture.

I agree with your opinion about this show. I watched 2 seasons and decided not to watch a third one. I’m not familiar with French culture outside of being a tourist, but I did find the show to be unrealistic. Any person who ever earned something through hard work (and marketing is a very tough industry) will be amazed how effortlessly Emily solves all the problems and has great marketing ideas that would work in a culture that she has no idea about! Just how did they live without her before…

I find that many of these shows feed the American perception of France for people who have never been there. And feed a stereotype Americans think it is. I have found the same kind of thing in Asian films. And in Asian film they do not portray Americans well. Which is very sad! Your critique is spot on. They feed stereotypes and false perceptions the country.

My husband and I have been in Paris many times and is our favorite city ever. We have not encountered rude people but we realize that the French are more seriously minded and we respect that. We try to blend in,speak a bit of French and have had other tourists come up to us for help. Many Americans (and we have seen them) while abroad give us a bad name with the way they act. We all need to respect other cultures and act appropriately.

Thankyou for this video! On all counts you are correct. EIP does injustice to the French people, who I have found to be hard-working, congenial, kind, and respectful. And, I too found Emily and Mindy's outfits to be absurd and out of place. Also, Emily's apartment in Paris is great! Two big windows and her own bathroom, and a spacious kitchen. Yet in the show, she seems dissatisfied with the place. At best, this show is just a curious entertainment not based on reality.

You are absolutely correct in your observations regarding the show. I have watched the entire thing and I will watch any further seasons, despite its inane silliness and ridiculous nature. The reason I watch it is because I love Paris and I love French culture and I love the aesthetic scenery. No other show is going to give you continuous views of the city the way this show does so it’s worth the angst of putting up with silly dialogue and ridiculous storylines. You may not appreciate that living in Paris, but for those of us, living elsewhere, Bowmanville Ontario actually, it’s a feast for the eyes!

The large apartment and endless wardrobe make me crazy. I scoffed at this from the beginning and cried “Aha! See?” while watching your apartment search videos. How could it be in her budget, and where would she stash that expensive and over the top wardrobe in an affordable apartment? I know, it’s just a cute little series, but seriously, she has no real struggles?

OK found some time to reply. I think you are right in many ways on how they wrongly portrait French people. But with that said, I am older than you are. I think most people outside of America is used to be portrayed in a templated way. As I am from Sweden we are used to be pictured in a very promiscuous way due to a couple of movies made in the 60th. But when I was in France in my youth I and many of my friends were shocked over how promiscuous they were and how rude they were. If you didn´t speak French they hardly replied to you and you got no service. Have in mind that they hardly spoke any other language which was a part of it. But it was not unusual that they sometimes replied in English when you asked in French even though there English was a lot worse than my French. Just to let you know how bad it was. Not sure if you know this but Paris had a campaign to get Parisians to be more polite cause they scared away too many turist. Many I talk to still think French are rude and I have to defend them all the time and say they are so much better now than before. The same goes with smoking and drinking. Everyone smoked and everywhere and they had wine for lunch even the bus drivers or taxi drivers. It has been a change to the better in many ways but oohh how they laughed at every other country who implemented restrictions about smoking. Thank you for a fun channel. Hope you read my post in the right context. Not to criticize you

Good luck on season 2 :) ; as a french (and white) boy not born in Paris but living for 6 years+, i endorse all your smart reviews. La bise is a thing you can do in the collge/school, with your friends really easily; it's more complicated in a professionnal universe, eventhough i tried in my first day at Conseil d'Etat and it was half awkward, half welcomed. There is something you didn't say : Emily discovered the French culture very rapidly, few days after her arrival in Paris (whereas you were already able to speak in french, been a student, etc); she is seen by other people as a helpless american girl, totally lost and not able of speaking in french. I wasn't schocked by the way of mens trying to help her but also to trying to seduce. I witnessed few scenes from old guys trying to bise / hand kiss / etc (I don't say it's normal, for sure) or from guys as old as Emily (single or not) trying to seduce in every occasion. Emily in Paris is a series also about love and it's dreamly offered and they want to put comic in everything.

I think most people know it is just fiction and don't see it as reality...if you watch other shows doing a scene in Paris...well...it's based the same way...even in International films that I have seen..But no matter...I know few You Tubers that love the show..even one has one outfit that Emily wears and she has lived in Paris...I don't think she see's Paris like the writing in the show...but, most love the fashion that Emily wears....because as I know most of the ladies shop where you can buy them...like Dior and other designer shops...but, I agree with you...they are just ordinary people like us...with just a bit of differences in culture...love your channel...

I couldn't agree more. You have been able to watch much more of this abomination than I have. When some of my friends got all excited about this show & thought I would love it because I love French culture, loved living there, etc., they were stunned when I hated it & thought it was idiotic. For the most part these were people who had never even been to France. and maybe that was the audience this show was targeting. There are many TV shows that do this with all sorts of different cultures, i.e. shows that act as if all Italians are mobsters, all southerners are racist, all Californians are airheads whose only concern is how they look. these presumptive portrayals only seem accurate to someone who does not know much, if anything, about whoever is being portrayed in such a one dimensional fashion. Ignorance abounds.

I'm not young and I agree for the most part that the main character is incredibly ethnocentric which is not uncommon with Americans abroad. Rather than attempting to assimilate with the cultural mores, there seems to be the sense that Emily (and all things American) are somehow better more dynamic, smarter more innovative ....pretty condescending stuff. I've read a few reviews by Parisians and overwhelmingly they find the show insulting, simplistic and juvenile

Why watch a commentary of a show only to comment against the commentary? I also live in France and couldn’t watch through the first episode because I found it offensive.
