Chris Ward is my all time favorite rebeled-out surfing Hero! Three times in this life, I have been so honored to surf next to him at North Jedi, Oceanside harbor. Everytime, he was friendly and welcoming of me. The Speed and Power of his maneuvers, capivated me hardcore. For decades, I've always rooted for the Man. Strictly because of his kind, down to Earth nature. Regardless, of him never becoming World Champion. He will always be My Champion! God bless You Chris Ward
While I was seriously hoping for Ward to be the next Curren or great Californian hope for World Champ, I still think his style of surfing is the best in many ways when combining power, flow, and the highest in tech at the same time, though it seems he's been disenchanted lately which is making him pull an Occy pre world champ comeback. The time feels right for ...Lost to catch fire again, I think, so I'd love to see him pull some magic and nail a world title he rightfully deserves, just like the cocky, rocky, kamakazi himself.
Good observation on his style and let's not forget he's probably been in the Top Ten (at least I think) Best Barrel Riders in the World when it gets gnarly for 15 years if not more, multi Pipe Masters finalist w a 2nd that was just a hair away from a W .Chris left Lost altogether almost a year ago. The clothing side of things had been struggling pretty hard recently and couldn't really pay anyone anymore hence Mason Ho to Rip Curl and Wardo looking for a main sponsor. He has signed up w a new board co. called Watermark. He recently released a signature board design and Wardo fins. He's in a pretty good place right now and surfing as good as ever. He won a contest in Mex just recently and still has competitive spirit could Win QS's still but the QS is such an expensive time consuming yr long grind most of the time to surf shitty waves. At 39 with a toddler still under 10yrs old he co-parents, a new girlfriend, new board sponsor but no big cash rich main sponsor on the horizon he's smart to go "freesurfer" and chase slabs, big barrels and good waves and maintain a consistent quality content internet/instagram presence. thats not happening for alot of reasons one he doesn't take surfing seriously enough and more importantly the landscape has changed on tour the days of getting pissed drunk, faded and pilled out of your mind are long gone....and people loving that attitude and that surf culture died when Irons was found dead in a Hotel room with his wife 8 months pregnant... Todays tour is way more buttoned down for the Wards to succeed nowadays for better or for worse...
