Nice images. Good to see you out and on your belly getting it done. :) I have had wonderful experiences with the 180 -600. I am truly surprised at the AF speed and VR with my Z9. It has become my go-to wildlife lens.
It's a great combo. I use it a lot filming wildlife

Great to see you out again. And thank you for putting the distance to the subject. I've often thought I have something wrong in settings or the camera is just not getting the focus right. Now I understand the results I get are typical for the distances.
Very much so about distance. I plan to do a video about teleconverters and distance to subject is a HUGE factor. Anything past 50 or 75 years depending on size of subject will denote if you get any detail in the subject.

Scott, it’s so wonderful to see you outside in nature where your soul is so happy! What a beautiful location! I love the low camera angle views of the Black oystercatchers! Both of the lens-camera combinations you used produced fine images! I would imagine the Canon R7 and 200-800 combination was a lot lighter to carry in the field, even if the ergonomics of holding the camera were not as good as the Nikon Z9.
I would really like to see a Canon R7 II with much more of a professional body, improved sensor resolution, subject recognition, AF speed, tracking, and accuracy, and a much larger buffer! A CF Express Type B card would also be a great addition! I would also like to see Nikon make a true mirrorless successor to the highly acclaimed D500!
Thanks Vaughn. The r7 combo was almost same weight as I had the 1.4 tc on it, but it was a touch lighter. Yeah be nice to see those things in the next r7. probably couple years out on that camera though
Awesome footage Scott ! I mostly loved the duo opening their mouth like a mirror at 4:20 🤩
Before that shot, all other Nikon images were @560 mm and also several Canon shots were @900 mm. Do you shoot on purpose a little shorter than the maximum focal length because of sharpness ?? or was it mainly because of the composition ?
So far, I didn't yet pop a 1.4x between my R5 and the 200-800. Doing that on the R7 yields you nearly 3x the reach (although you don't factor in the crop ration in the focal length info, and I do get why) of how you were using the Nikon combo. I'm amazed that on youtube and after your processing, these R7 images are nearly the same IQ as your Z9. I bet in full resolution you'll notice the difference ;-)
Good to see you're able to get really low again. Take it step by step, but I'm sure being out with our feathered friends gives you the extra energy to recover man !

Cassie is one of my photography buddies I shoot with a lot. I haven't had any swipes with the 200-800 myself.
Beautiful shots!! the 200-800mm was on my bucket list but recent events destroyed my project on saving for it,I crossed it off the list as I won't recover financially ,retirement is coming so I gotta be careful with my pennies.

In the UK the Canon 200-800 is non existent, local camera store saying may not be available at all this year 🙁
The kens is VERY rare right now. Stewarts Photo here in Anchorage has so far only gotten 1 copy and that's the one I have. Hopefully Canon will get more of them out soon.
Any chance you can do a vs between the AFS 180-400 f4 and the Z mount 400 f.4.5? That would be awesome. I'm wondering how the olde 180-400 f4 would do with the Z8? It's supposed to have excellent optics and has the built in 1.4 TC. Thank you!!
If I can get hold of the lens, but it's doubtful. Pretty hard one to get a hold of to test out.

One of your best vids to date. I have to say, the Nikon photos look sharper on my screen. Did you have back surgery or ??? Whatever take care & hope you are feeling better.
No surgery so far. Both lenses are very sharp. Just had really different light conditions from the oystercatchers vs the small birds. plus I had the 1.4 TC on the 200-800 lens. During the oystercatchers we had full light cloud cover which is the best lighting conditions for not shadows etc. The small birds the sun was peeking out and tossing some mid day harsh light out.
Which lens/setup do you prefer? I'm still on the fence with the 200-800mm (haven't shot it yet). I have an R5 with 100-500mm which I love. I plan to get the R5II unless they don't update enough. I have also recently been using a Nikon ZF + 200-600mm with plans to try out the Z8. The stabilization for video seems far better on Nikon than Canon (or Sony). Plus the lack of external zoom and shorter throw seem nice on the Nikon 180-600mm although I haven't yet used the 200-800mm.
@@bladerealm124 200-800 I prefer over the 100-500. that 600-800 range and DoF is fun. Now the z8 and the 180-600 is very very good combo. I love the sensor on the z8/z9

I was wondering you have considered doing a video on Nikon’s new 28-400 mm z lens on a Z8. Is it a wildlife lens or just a gimmick? The light weight has some advantages, but the lens has a lot of disadvantages.
That's an interesting lens. I think they priced it too high for the folks that would be interested in. If I can get a copy of it, I will test it out and see.
@@WILDALASKA Hope you can. I am interested in it. My 180-600 on my Z9 comes in at eight pounds. Too much for my 78-year-old querpo to hike around with for any distance.
If you had a budget of $4500 USD for a body and lens setup what would you chose? I only shoot wildlife still and video. I am leaning towards Sony A7iv and 200-600mm, but I see nothing comparable with Canon. The canon R6mii and RF 200-800mm is decent but you can't buy one currently as the lens is on backorder.Any advice?
Invest in the Glass. Get the best lens you can get and the bodies are all great in the mirrorless world for subject detection. End goal is to work up to a 400 f/2.8, 500/600 f/4, but that gets you into the $5k+ range in the used market. The separation, low light capability, colors etc are much superior to all the other glass. The front glass crystals take 18 months to grow alone, hence the big price tags.
The best for wildlife as of current date is the Z8 and the Z 180-600 in the price range you are kicking around. This hits at $5.2K though, but it is the king as of today from everything I have tested used.
