Giving up the booze is a fantastic example to your children.Sadly I went to far with my addiction.Saw the light to late, but now sober for nearly a year.Watching videos like yours really does cement my sobriety and has educated me to act. Thanks
My biggest triggers, the ones I come across most frequently, are boredom and impulsivity. Like the impulsive urge to drink is what's the hardest for me to overcome. It's the fact that I could drink that makes me drink, if that makes sense. I wasn't even thinking about it, it was just as simple as "hey there's alcohol available, we should have some" and before I knew it, I was drinking. Now that I'm more aware of that, I actually put thought into it. "Hey we could be drinking right now" "hmm no remember the last time we drank excessively? It led to so many problems we're still dealing with. We can't have it." "but what if we drank just one?" "LMAO since when has it ever been just one??" this thought process is actually helping me with the impulsivity of excess drinking and I've noticed I don't want to be the person that people don't trust with alcohol. I want to just be myself, no altered behavior or thought processes. It's been extremely difficult as I've never gone without alcohol, but I'm slowly getting to the point where I don't want to drink and recognizing the bad that came with drinking.
Animals have huge issues with boredom too. Dogs chew things and my cat stares at me for hours when she's bored. It's such a great topic for you to bring up with drinking.
Wow, this is so me. That's one of the major realizations that compelled me to stop drinking was that I found the act of drinking to be extremely boring and unstimulating. But I didn't want to stop so I didn't stop for quite awhile because I didn't know what to do and didn't want to become bored as that is my worst state of mind to be in. Needless to say my life is so full and busy and stimulating once I stopped ingesting a poisonous substance, because I feel so much better and have so much more energy and mental focus/clarity!
Boredom can actually be a good dopamine detox. After a period of boredom we can appreciate smaller things that give us a dopamine buzz . Walks , talks , company , nature. We don't need to eay fix of alcohol for a dopamine buzz .
The boredom problem. If I don't drink, what am I going to do with the time? So, I kept drinking...for 25 years. If early in sobriety, doing anything is good. Arts and craft or hobby store. Paint by numbers! I didn't know these shops existed. This is a great topic. It is helpful. Thank you. :)
I'm 4 days on the wagon and one of the main reasons is that alcohol drastically reduces my work rate to the point where nothing gets done. Instead of being creative, I'll have a drink. Over time (for reasons other than alcohol) I lost the enthusiasm I had for making art, it became a drag, and alcohol would come to be a replacement for activities I was once so passionate about. Now I've been sober for a few days I've had to try and regain that lost enthusiasm and have actually managed to do some work, cause it's what I HAVE to do - otherwise I am wasting my talent and a potential career. Alcohol might work for some, but in my case it was a substitute for creativity and a panacea for boredom.
I love your down to earth nature. And your help to think about alcohol. Alcohol really is nasty, and when you really think about it, ie health, feeling bad etc, it helps to not consume it. Dont want to kid myself but right now i have no desire at all to put that poison in my body. Thank you.
I would definitely say boredom is my #1 reason I drank... thank you for diving in and researching this more! I really see myself in your experiences and stories. Thank you for your work!
What has gotten me into self medicating is the lack of people around me that are creative in the way I crave to be around but I’m scared to seek them out or can’t be bothered to do so because I imagine the eventual disintegration.
You’re my new favorite person , I’m so happy I’ve found you during this time of understanding life and myself & my alcoholism , I’ve been watching your videos and I’m going to continue. Everything I’ve learned from you so far resonates so well . Thank you so much for being and doing the work you needed to do for yourself to help the rest of us. It’s beautiful
If you stay curious and seek God, it is an adventure every day. That’s my take. I don’t get bored that much because there is never enough time to read but I did drink to shut off my brain from any emotional pain. I can’t wait to get her book! It’s like I woke up from all the lies.
i swear, this is the most helpful video i have hit. part of my life is in the creative spectrum (music), and i am HIGHLY prone to boredom, which is also THE major drinking trigger for me. this video really helps with its emphasis on pursuing growth activities that involve goals. heck, i'm already in a field where that is true, but this video really drove the idea home. thank you.
Great quotes great content...Im embracing the boredom and pain currently just 4 days in knowing most of it will be gone as I approach my goals...just found your channel and love it thank you so much.
thank goodness for this video. it got me through strong cravings this morning. I am a VERY bored person so this info really helped me realize a lot of things.
I didn't even know I needed to learn about this topic until you taught me with this video. Thank you so much. Making my inspired list now. And, thank you so much for including the Leggos, painting, cake making until you did journal onto book which turned into your boredom breaker. You gave me examples that it's OK to "fail" at first attempts at boredom. So often, my inner critic is loud when I try anything new. I will now tell Inner critic, "Hey! I'm in my Leggo phase. Back off!"
Very helpful and profound video nobody has talked about boredom in this way before it is so helpful thank you. Now I need help with the next step. I do not know what I want to learn about what my goals are?
So, getting together with friends to taste different wines is something to do. This often accompanies a complementary meal. We get to study wines, their origins and visit the places the wines are made. If this is not a constructive hobby to pass the time, I don't know what is. Those who drink to get sloshed and suffer from hangovers the next day are just doing it wrong.
What a great thing to get introspective about and ask yourself why you're feeling so passionate about this? Would you feel a need to get so fired up about another activity in your life? Look up the ACT technique and keep getting curious!
@@ThisNakedMind I am just as passionate about cross country skiing, kayaking and cycling, activities I plan to continue throughout my retirement years. It's all about balance in our lives.
Thank you for your awesome vlogs! Your openness and educated answers are so helpful! I just bought your book and will read it cover to cover. Keep up the good work!

The awareness you're already exhibiting makes a monumental difference! You've got this!!

Yes they certainly struggle with this as well.

Such a great way to think about it!
This is very true for me.

This might also explain why so many of the most creative artists, musicians, poets, and writers often had problems with addiction to drugs/alcohol.
They usually do their best work under the influence, I hate it
MustangDaddy1981 That’s my problem! I also do my best work while drinking beer!

I'd suggest journaling. As you work on it it will come to you.
