We live in San Diego and coincidentally just did Sequoia in October and Tucson, AZ over Thanksgiving. For Sequoia we were pulling our camp trailer with our Model X. We camped in Three Rivers at a campground with 50 amp service, allowing us to recharge nightly like we were at home. Still this proved to be limiting trying to reach the far end of Kings Canyon. I’m looking forward to my max pack R1T not only for the increased range but for that extra exploring range in these remote areas with limited charging. I hope Rivian and others get on the plan to install chargers in or at least near National Parks.
The trip back from Tucson right after Thanksgiving was no problem. I thought superchargers would be full but it turns out we never did have to wait. This is one of my wife’s concerns with the pending Rivian. The supercharger network is not only better distributed but more reliable as well. There’s definite anxiety when EV tripping in a non Tesla.

When I got my 2018 Tesla I for some reason had free supercharging at Qualcomm and I lived in apartments without charging so I was always there but it wasn’t THAT bad, depending on when you go. Problems came when there were multiple chargers not working well but Qualcomm is pretty cool so I’m glad I had that experience. Now I live in Tucson and own a home so it’s ten times better quality of life

Nice update! I'm thinking of transitioning from my Model 3 to a different make of EV someday, and your observations about the DCFC network were helpful. Interesting comments on the R1S vs R1T. I had originally ordered the SUV but I realized that I would not use the third row much at all and the bed had greater utility. A couple of months into ownership and I think that was the right call. I've used the bed a bunch. There is plenty of space in the 'T for 4 people.

There's another EV channel I follow on RUclips where the channel host who lives in the Los Angeles area bought a Rivian R1T and tried to road trip with it up to the Bay Area and had a horrible experience like the one you had in El Centro. Every Electrify America DC fast charger that he tried was either out of service or had a ridiculously slow charging speed where it would have taken an entire day to charge. These kinds of experiences really highlight the advantage of owning a Tesla. Tesla's supercharger network is so vast and their equipment is so reliable that you almost never have a charging challenge. Even if you happen to get a charger that's out of service, there are so many others available that it's almost never an issue.

Every review of a Rivian I watch is the same 1-the software is “ nit there yet” and 2-charging is less than an optimal experience. These are pretty important things to be having problems with for an EV. Maps that send you to the wrong destination should be a serious red flag. I get it they are a startup sp these are “first or early adopter” issues but you are not seeing the same level issues woth software from other EV manufacturers introducing their new cars into the market. These are expensive trucks and SUVs that should come with a working maps app day one. I cannot talk most of frioends into an EV due to the problems with non-Tesla charging networks. These are not insignificant problems for someone new to EVs. Sure we are all veteran owners so we can figure this stuff out but that is the problem right you have to have a great deal of experience with EVs to successfully own a Rivian.

Perception vs Reality. I watch these Rivian videos and it kinda exposes the perception of Tesla from the masses as always disingenuous.
What we have here is a TON of "quality" issues on a brand new 80k+ vehicle. Sound familiar? Because when Tesla had even a fraction of these issues it was literally in the news. A constant barrage of articles and "influencers" making way overblown diatribes of "quality/service" issues so much so that it would become part of the brand. And it was good for the algorithm because bashing Tesla was guaranteed clicks & views.
And now...we have all these new EVs coming out and surprise surprise...they have similar problems (just like all cars have) but the difference is, people not pushing that narrative for click & views and making light of it. Some of the reviews I watch don't just have quality problems...hey have functional ones. Bad suspension? Features breaking on day 1? Oh dont even get me started on the horrendous charging issues.
It has been pretty amusing to watch from an outsider perspective. I dont own a Tesla or any EV yet. I got pulled into this from an engineering interest. (work in aerospace) It just goes to show you that unfortunately we as people cant blindly trust each other and especially cant trust the media from mainstream to the independent content creators...and have to dig a little more to get an honest & genuine perspective on where the future is headed with all this transition that will happen. Get multiple sources folks and do some critical thinking for yourself...yes its more work but at least you wont get fooled into making a mistake because of the algorithm.

Here is a lost lesson....Rivian and Lucid will bankrupt as soon as the big car makers get in the electric game........buying these is a waste of money.....

Is this a video about the United States charging infrastructure or the vehicle? You eat up most of the video talking about topics that have nothing to do with the truck.

You’re wife said it correctly (charging in CA) it’s not a problem THERE. Rich Rebuilds did a trip over on the east coast in a Rivian and it was a totally different experience. He makes the best points in charging in that the infrastructure is key and most places (out of CA) just don’t have it.

Like Bjorn says, "ABC", always be charging, my observation is that if one depends on EA, should be "always Be Checking (for other stations)"
If you have a portable L2 EVSE, most camping sites provide 1450 outlets. jus sayin.

Great series on the Rivian! Just don't know if I would commit to one vehicle that is electric with a 230 mile actual range. I would have to sell my Santa Cruz and EV6 to get the Rivian. The prices have really come down. Launch editions are mid to high 80's and falling. If it was a Tesla with the super charger network maybe, but I travel to Austin and San Antonio for family and just don't know about the EA network etc. (Ben's face while at the station in El Centro says it all) My EV6 does not leave town. The R1T sure is sweet though!

Good to know that the biggest issue with these trucks are the charging networks and not the trucks themselves. Now I just have to wait and see if/when they come to the UK and at what cost 🤞

The charging problem is why I won't buy a electric vehicle it can barely take u from city to city then u have to wait hours to charge its a fun toy but not something I would get to be reliable
