i think the reason why they decided to not show this prison as we usually see prisons in media is to get the audience to believe on a different kind of prison, a prison with the goal of rehabilitation rather than incarceration

I feel like this movie did a phenomenal part in showing how claustrophobic prison can be and how it is impacting these guys lives. The whole REASON they’re even doing this program is to escape the harsh reality of prison and find an escape. The main goal of Domingo’s character is to literally leave prison and be out in the real world. Multiple scenes of them imagining the outside world and yearning for that. Scenes of their human rights being violated by prison guards and discriminated. The film isn’t in your face about all of this and treats it subtly because it respects its audience and trusts us to connect pretty simple dots. 10/10 movie for me, one of the best I’ve seen in a few years

Watching this after Sing Sing's screening a couple weeks back at Boston's Roxbury International Film Festival! So stoked for this to come to theaters in the US soon.

I think the reason they didn’t show how bad the prison was because it was supposed to be an uplifting escape for the audience just like the theatre group was for the members. As Dino said in the movie,”We’re here to become human again.” I also think it was maybe to protect the actors as they were already putting themselves through a lot emotionally by returning to a prison for filming purposes.

For me, showing the actual prison and the horrors of it more would've made the frustration and desperation hit harder. Still loved the movie I think im just a sucker for prison stuff

I can't understand what the hell is A24 doing in releasing this movie. In the UK it should be out on 30th August but there are absolutely no signs of this film appearing anywhere. They are messing with its release to somehow have some positive effect on its Oscar recognition. If I have to spend my time searching how am I going to see this movie for me its killing the vibe.

Just saw it and loved it. I agree that his performance was way up there, as with Rustin. Such a wonderful actor. So, the Taviani brothers made "Ceasar Must Die" back in 2012. No coziness there. Pathos, pain and redemption. Thank you for your vids and greetings from Hoboken.

Just saw Sing Sing at the Miami Film Festival!!!
Sing Sing is a great movie! It’s like Shawshank meets One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Hits all the emotional beats. People who don’t know that all the actors are playing themselves will be blown away at the end credits. I do think because of that it’ll win best picture. It’s doing something new. Its biggest Oscar hurdle is will the film make money at the box office. If it can make 75-100 million worldwide. Assuming it has a budget of 20-30 million, it should be good for the big win.
Only negative is it solely focuses on the theater group and doesn’t have much prison atmosphere, outside of rehearsals. But we found out that the reason for that was they didn’t want the former inmates to have to be back in a prison environment. So it was mostly all filmed in a detention center. Besides one day actually at Sing Sing prison.
Coleman Domingo gives an amazing performance. Definitely the Oscar frontrunner. They even gave him top billing in the credits. Even before the director. One thing I didn’t know going into it was Domingo’s character is based on a real guy. That guy makes a cameo in the movie.
Clarence Marlin is a definite frontrunner for Supporting Actor. He cowrote the movie and is one of the actual members of the group. He’ll definitely win at least one Oscar for the screenplay. If it wasn’t for Samuel L Jackson in The Piano Lesson I would say Marlin is the winner of supporting actor too. I wouldn’t be surprised if Marlin and Jackson split awards in the next circuit.
Two of the actors/real life former prisoners were at the theater last night. Because they both live in Florida. One of the two watched the movie for the first time with us. He was an OG alumni of the theater program. The director of the film was also there. And he told us that 60% of incarcerated people go back to prison within 3 years of getting out, but only 3% of the theater inmates go back.
Oscar Predictions before seeing it: 8 nominations and 5 wins. After seeing it: 7 nominations (Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Actor (Domingo), Supporting Actor (Marlin), Editing, and Song) and 4-5 wins (Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Actor (Domingo), Editing, and maybe Supporting Actor (Marlin). The one nomination I took away was for Paul Racci. He doesn’t have much to do in the movie as the director of the group because all the good teaching moments go to Domingo. Therefore he has almost no arc

I know it is getting Oscar buzz but personally I would rather see One Life, It Ends With Us, Fly Me to the Moon, Ordinary Angels. I realize this and Dune Part two are more realistic but it has been a weak oscar year so far.
