  • Just an easier way to make rifle rods.They look nice, easy to make and best of all cheap. I didn't want a bunch of wooden blocks in my safe and have to worry about gluing them, bending the rods and all that stuff. If you guys need thinner rods you can also buy a regular cabinet knob with threads and buy the 8-32 threaded rod that screws into it. The 8-32 rod is a little flimsy but will also work well for those of you who need a thinner rod for your barrel.

    Nice project. Take a look at 5mm carbon fiber arrow rods on ebay, they don't bend like the plastic rods and no need to put coating on them, the carbon fiber will not damage the barrels, Tipton uses carbon fiber for cleaning rod.
    Drop of super glue will keep the wood knob on the rod.

    Thanks for posting this. Great idea. The commercial ones are too expensive for what they are.

    I used your idea and made my own rifle rods! I used a belt sander to flatten the knobs. Worked great. I purchased some indoor/outdoor thin carpet at Menards for the under side of the shelf. The kind they use to cover professional speaker boxes. $39 cents a square foot. Used some spray on Contact cement to glue the carpet to the shelf. Velcro sticks to it really good. If looking for carpet, just take a piece of velcro to the store with you and try it on whatever carpet that you picked out to make sure it will work. Just a tip for anyone with a .22 or .223 caliber rifle, you'll need to buy an 1/8 inch rod for this because once you heat shrink the 3/16 inch rod, it won't fit in the .22 caliber rifle barrels. Not sure about fastening the 1/8" rod to the wooden knobs as these are going to be smaller, and since the knobs already have a hole drilled in them, you may have to glue them in somehow. I have to make a couple of those, but haven't got that far yet. But the other ones worked great! Thanks for the idea, ramssl!!

      Glad I can help thanks for watching. For the .22 or .223 caliber don't use the wood knobs, try using the regular threaded cabinet knobs and buy the 8/32nd threaded rod for them. Once you shrink wrap the 8/32 rod it should work for the .22 and .223 caliber barrels. Hope this helps.

    Loved the video loved the concept just a thought what do you think about replacing the Velcro with small nudinium magnets and just put a sheet of thin gauge steel at the top

      Another good idea, I just had a lot of velcro handy, still works great to this day.

    Another tip for you guys that need a thinner rifle rod and want to use the 1/8 inch rod as mike suggested. If you want to use this rod and wondering how to hold it in the wooden knobs just put a little wood glue into the knob hole and bang a wood dowel into the hole. Let it dry and cut off the top then drill a small hole for the 1/8 inch rod and install the same way, or you can bang a golf tee into the knob and make your hole for the 1/8 inch rod that way. hope this helps.

    My Idea is similar but I took old used drawer/ door pulls left from when I resurfaced my kitchen cabinets. From Amazon I ordered 3/32 x 15 1/2" bamboo dowel rods. These will screw right in the used cabinet door pulls. Also ordered loop cloth and 3/4" round self adhesive hook dots. Cleaned the door pulls and stuck on the dots, inserted the 3/32 x 15 1/2" dowel rod , applied the cloth loop fabric to the underside of gun safe shelf and there you have it. Enough for 50 rifles $35.00 or so. Bamboo dowel rod is fairly stiff and fits a 22 LR barrel on up to the 12 Ga. shotgun .

      So you didn't use the heat shrink tubing
      Just used wooden dowels correct

      no metal rods , Bamboo 3/32 x 15 1/2" dowels on Amazon. No shrink tubing.

      Also I filled my safe tonight. I have one 17HMR caliber rifle. I used an old cooking thermometer for that one. Velcro dot stuck on the 3/4" dial face. , the bamboo dowel rods wont damage the gun barrel. I would make a practice of running a patch down the barrel before taking the rifle out to shoot

      I can't locate the bamboo rods you mentioned on Amazon
      Any chance you could post the link for me
      Thanks

    Well done. I know it complicates things but for greater stability, the rod needs to be close to the diameter of the bore.

    • @ramssl
      @ramssl  Год назад

      Yea that would be way to complicated lol I have been using these for the past 6 years and they still work great on every size gun, they hold the guns great because they don't bend like those cheap plastic ones they sell, just move the rod to the front of the barrel, no need to size every bore, plus I don't have to worry about what rod is for what gun. Still have a bag of the plastic crap they sell in my safe, I haven't figured out a good use for them yet lol.

    What size heat shrink did you use?

    • @ramssl
      @ramssl  6 месяцев назад +2

      If I Remember I think it was 1/4" but it depends on the size rods you go with. Just go on amazon I got a 50' roll. The good thing about the shrink tube is it will shrink to just about any size rods you go with. FYI those rods still work perfect to this day still have them on all my guns.

      I really like the idea and it’s a hell of a lot cheaper than what they want for them.

    • @ramssl
      @ramssl  6 месяцев назад +1

      yea that's another reason I made them, not to mention those plastic ones are crap. I see people also use the wooden dowels sold at home depot may even be cheaper, no need to shrink wrap since its wood inside your barrel and not metal. Just another idea GL.

    Suggestion: Until you showed the actual application of how these are used, I thought you were making a horrible diy cleaning rod. You should explain what you’re making at the beginning of the video to avoid confusion.

    • @ramssl
      @ramssl  Год назад +1

      Suggestion: Read the title it says diy Rifle Rods that's what they are called no further explanation needed, it doesn't say diy Cleaning Rods. Searching Rifle Rods may help you to not get so confused so easily.

    you're putting metal rods in your gun barrels?

    • @ramssl
      @ramssl  7 лет назад +3

      They all have Black Polyolefin Heat Shrinking Tube over them, no metal comes in contact with the barrels.
