Adam Savage Installs a Collet Locker on His Lathe!

  • Here's another instance where one build begets another build. While working on the rack gears for his miniature vault build, Adam found himself in need of a better system to hold those parts in his lathe using a standard 5C collet. So instead of using his tried and true chuck, he disassembles part of his lathe to install a collet locker and closer to get the repeatability he'll need for this project.

    there are calculations for feeds and speeds for every bit out there or you can calculate them your self
    cnc relies on these calculations
    manual relies on the feel of the operator
    but mainly cnc allows for manufactures to have an operator run a program that someone else wrote and produce parts and always get the same part over and over again and save money on the operator(unskilled) while having the programmer(skilled) doing the hard work
    manual operators all have to be skilled and get paid for that skill

    it's a " Royal Products lever collet closer" and the thing you called a "bent shaft" is a "draw tube" ;) they are made to be used with a spindle taper adapter sleeve which allows the collet to be INSIDE the spindle nose, this reduces the stockout and minimizes the chance for runout from axial misalignment. using it with a scroll closer nose instead gives you the worst of both worlds, the poor alignment of a collet hanging way out there, with the setup time and complexity of a lever closer. the scroll closers were less used traditionally because of the high cost and (potentially) poor runout. the current availability of the cheap keyed closers combined with the easy setup makes them by far the most common choice for hobby machinists these days.

    Is a collett like what's in a dremel head?

    • @aritakalo8011
      @aritakalo8011 Месяц назад +8

      Yes, in the nut and collet models. As in that separate nut and then the set of different size little inserts aka set of collets depending on the insert/tools shank diameter. Dremel uses push type collets. In this video being pull type collets. Difference being how the clamping force is applied. Push types, the collect head is pushed into the taper/holder. Typically done with a threaded nut going over the collet. In pull type the rear of the collect has the threads to be used to pull into the holder.
      However some dremels have drill type universal chuck as the tool head, meaning essentially a mini 3 jaw chuck. Advantage being it can accommodate various sizes.
      However collects advantage is more precise and consistent holding.

    Did you need to use the collet chuck with the closer? This is a bit unusual. These closers are normally used with a small Morse Taper to 5C taper adapter that you just push right into the spindle bore. The extra working room is probably not a big deal, but you do have fewer pieces potentially adding runout.

    Tube rattling aside, It seems to me you are overcomplicating the front end, and that may in part have complicated the backend of your collet closer setup.
    I don’t understand why you are sacrificing your ring gear closing collet chuck to use as a closer head. If your spindle taper is big enough (mine is a MT6, it’s a big machine, not a tool room machine) just turn a MT->5C collet adapter to use with the locker, so you have BOTH a locker, and a ring gear collet chuck, as both have their uses. Worst case make a D1-6 5c adapter precisely setup for your locker. You have all the things you need to do this right? I am pretty sure I have seen you use a tool post grinder, so…. For ER-50, I just made my own chuck adapter that fits the D1-6 plate that I already have threaded (3”-8 ACME with a 82° taper for centering and aligning) for random odd ball things I want to screw into the headstock, and like odd collet adapters, and sometimes I will thread the work itself to mount it to that plate. That plate and the collet chuck adapters has turned into one of my most valued tools.
    These are not terribly hard things to make, and it seems it’s about time for you to make a collet chuck in your turning skills progression, and may result in a more “elegant” solution.😊
    Long live the manuals machines!
    (I have both manual and CNC)

    Would it have been possible to machine an new '5C chuck' with the screw-interface 6 inches in? From my uneducated/looking outside in perspective there would be enough length to make the collet reach inwards.
    That way you can increase the length capacity. Also because you can machine closer to the driver side, there would be less runout?

I don't get the open hostility between CNC guys and manual guys. They compliment each other.

    Adam an impressive gatherer or watchmaking equipment and other interesting tooling has passed away and they are auctioning off lots of stuff. As I know you have recently been beefing up your small lathe gear it may be worth looking at to see if there is anything interesting for you. Another channel i follow just posed a video about it here: ruclips.net/video/CcPDZB11A9w/видео.html

    Can the bouncing handle be rigged to be removable? Also, perhaps it is the bouncing of the handle which is flexing the pipe causing the variation in tolerance? Can you remove the handle and double check the tolerance again?

    I was looking at buying one of these for my takisawa tsl800 but it's was the same deal as yours, it would need the tube modified. It wasn't even a good deal like you got so after asking them a few questions about it I knew it just wouldn't be worth the hassle.

    I have this same cheiftian 15 inch lathe. Mine is 60inch long. Seems to be very solid.

    Hope you got a heat treatable oil hardened tube, like O-1, because those internal threads must be fully hard.

    Machining metal is a art and a skill, both of those work differently in manual vs cnc, and yet they are the same...

    yikes. you are basically hammering on the bearings in your spindle when you hammer on the collet closer.

    After watching this video, I still don’t understand how the locker helps with setting parts a repeatable distance into the collet… it looks like it just makes it faster and easier to secure it…doesn’t he still need an end stop inside the collet…??

    I made mine a thread to lock instead of lever. Because it now fits many lathes, and not stuck on one machine forever.

    Can the lock not rattle loose ? , That would be dangerous.

    • @shuriken4573
      @shuriken4573 Месяц назад +1

      No, they won't rattle loose if properly tight. It is an adjustable over center mechanism so it will normally require a lot more force than normal vibration to unlock. You could leave the mechanism too loose to properly lock and your work may slip but that is user error
