What a gift of trail magic those spikes were! So wild to see the deer struggling with keeping their footing on the icy topped snow. Beautiful snow out there in the forest. And also sketchy with the ice coating. Hope you stayed warm in the shelter! Looked really cold out there.
Kathoola ExoSpikes are a good choice that I use. Microspikes are more aggressive and better for consistent ice/snow conditions. The ExoSpikes are less aggressive and can be work comfortably for short distances across rocky or bare terrain. They are lighter too than the micro-spikes. I’ve seen AT hikers using one or the other. The ExoSpikes seem to be very durable too.
With all that snow and ice, you really need at least one trekking pole to help break a fall. Why don’t you ever have enough snacks? You need to be prepared with all the winter weather ahead of you.
I use Yaktrax and we have the same conditions because I’m not that far from where you are and I’m telling you one thing, the spikes have saved my ass about 12 times so far. More snow coming!
Read the conditions and use those spikes...it should not take a slip and fall, with a near tumble down the side of the mountain to make that decision that they're needed. Great for your friends to provide you a pair, but that's a mini set...only two pins each foot. Soon as I could, I'd get my own set that stretches to fit your entire shoe, offering a few pins on both the ball and heel zones of the foot. Myself, I just received a new set for my own needs...not just for hiking, but if I'm in town and see icy sidewalks, I'm using them.
I’ve really enjoyed watching your AT flip flop. It’s amazing how your gear choices have changed from the beginning to now. Looks like you’ve learned a lot. Mind me asking, at the beginning you were talking about your sobriety and I was just wondering how that part of your journey was progressing? Have you started thinking about post trail? Plan on doing any other trails? CDT? PCT? Thanks for sharing your journey.
That's some crazy ice sheets you were walking across. I'm glad you were safe and no major falls. I did couple short hikes here and we had ice too but most is already melting away. Happy Trails brother, see you tomorrow ✌️
It’s nice that your not breaking through the snow and ice. Looks like nice walking with the spikes. I have both micro and nano spikes. Deal changers. Take care
Thank goodness for good friends. Their hospitality and the spikes were so valuable. Dont know how you're managing without trekking poles amazes me. And you're filming!!! Be careful out there. Thanks for including us.
Nice that you got the spikes, although I have to say, in that weather you definitely need trekking poles, you don’t want to end this hike over something you can control. I’ve been watching you everyday for over a year, I know you’re a tough guy, but be careful, because I don’t want to see you get hurt or worse, and other people put a lot of faith in how you hike.
🚶👟👟⛺🌞 Brrrrrrrrr it sure looks beautiful out there them deer needs a microspikes to stay safe and stay warm out there brother and happy hiking 💯💪🏆🏆🏆 AKA Louisiana mountain man
You're cruising! We'll probably pass you as we NOBO in February. That would be cool. I'd like to hear more about your choice to not use trekking poles. I know you said it made you concentrate on your foot placement. I'd love to ditch mine.

WHEW!!! DAMN that's icy and COLD!!! Stay safe!
Maybe consider the trekking poles again for this ice walking? You are the boss, but it seems they might help prevent a fall on this ice. Be safe.

Captain Crunch!! 😉

Ur the man. Hiking that stuff is brave.

Please be careful and definitely don’t take risks with the slippery conditions.
I Wow that’s some snowy ice conditions right here. Randall as a definite saver with those spikes. Stay safe and warm and happy trails.🤟🏻🥾🏔
I hate that ole hard icy snow. glad you didn't get hurt too bad.
Lambert Meadow isn't a meadow anymore. Found some flying squirrels there once - very cool. Wood rats are said to live under the shelter.

Safety first C.J. Cheering you on! 👊
Stay safe and WARM!
Bee Yoo Tee Full crunchy morning.
Those power wires just SOBO of Daleville are just as loud as when I went through there in April.
Stay safe 🙏

It's not "managing" those conditions without trekking poles...it's taking the gamble.
Idk how good trekking poles even be on ice like that be gamble even with them
I was anxious just watching you ! Prayers said ! You are amazing ! Get some antibiotic cream on your leg please 😉🦠
Get some micro spikes Captain Jack. It’s treacherous out there. Stay safe
Now you know why penguins walk the way they do! They don't want to slide around on their little penguin butts either! Waddle, waddle! Stay safe man!
Carvins Cove is pretty from there.
I was about to say you need some Kahtoola MICROspikes.
Still do I think . Those ones are not god enough I thunk . :)
What a scary treacherous hike👀❄️
Just do not buy the Hillsound brand. They break super easy, you will be unhappy.
Ice, ice baby. Gonna be frozen for another week.
Getting ready to get rougher. If you haven’t gotten spikes, get some. I got a pair I can send.

Yes and worried about a head injury with your hands in your pockets and nothing to brake your fall. Take care of you.

The cold eats through us skinny guys, keep the calorie intake high bro! You burn more to keep you warm believe it or not!
I'm just thinking you really need to get at least some real micro spicks, the icey stuff is dangers!
You will be in my thoughts. be safe
Michael
Go easy there’s a package for you for me and Salem
Dude you need Micro spikes bad . :)
He has them.
Those are not really micro spikes. They are some low end version. Better than nothing but not what you really need and they are not made for hard use.
@@mtadams2009 then maybe they are micro - micro, or nano spikes.
Does your Arcreryx rain jacket actually work, I haven’t found a rain jacket that works yet, they always soak thru. Thanks Otter🦦🦦🦦🦦🦦🦦
Nope. Definitely soaks through. I’d still prefer some kind of 3 layer gortex for winter but I’d get the REI one if I did it again
