So this is the song that got me on the bus - summer 78 I was 15, parked on a dead end (funny that) getting stoned with a friend and looking out at the Long Island Sound. He plops in the Skeletons 8 track and when it got around to the abridged version of this I was hooked - that rhythmic swing feel to Pigs vox to Jer's lead to that frantic end - hooked.
Why do people always comment about how someone was "underappreciated"? You find it on every video and song, even when the song was number one on the charts, triple platinum etc. Pigpen was never underappreciated. He is highly appreciated.
The ultimate version of this song. No mush stuff. No long winded vocal diatribes. No broken solos, no bad screams by Bobby. Great gospel style back up vocals. Drum solos are tasty and not too long. Explosion ending is fab, Only thing missing is the minor progression like the St Louis version. This version is still better, The best of all versions I have ever hear. Guess that's why it may the album........
Fillmore Bro I think there's better versions of the She got box-back nitties, great big noble thighs part. Ive heard them hit that part way better but this is one of the best versions no doubt
Just saw Dead and Co. at the Hollywood Bowl. My 50th year as a Deadhead. I kept waiting for Dead and Co. to break out into "Lovelight" and bring down the house just like I saw them do it at the Fillmore East in 1969. The did not and Jerry is still dead but I enjoyed the concert anyway.
DOCTOR: Susan, get to the TARDIS Were going to theAvalon Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, January 26, 1969 SUSAN: Why grandpa? DOCTOR: Errr... Research... now go
I've always wondered if someone from this show was so moved by this performance that they randomly stepped up to the mic at the 10:15 mark and spoke those words
I really dig the funky groove at 9:30, I can really hear the some Bootsy Collins groove in there. I especially love Jerry's playing, It's a kind of tune that makes you really happy. :)
Two dimensional, with Jerry and Bob only and neither, as awesome as they were in their genres, could effuse Pig's authentically powerful blues presence...I saw Dead first at Woodstock (WEIRD scene...), then in May of '70 at Fillmore East, NYC, then in HEIGHT of "deadness", I hung out with Jerry for couple of hours, virtually alone, Aug '70.Smoking dope with him (mine...), I picked his brain on newest project, "Am Beauty".He turned me on to free tix to The Dead's show, THAT night SF Fillmore WEST.
With all due respect to the Pigpen fans, the band was better without him. Just like Pink Floyd post-Syd Barrett. Jerry, Bobby and Phil had to step forward and with that there was more balance to everything they did.
cookq Interesting that Jerry Garcia would disagree with you. He has been quoted as saying that when Pig left, the band, for all intents and purposes, ceased to exist...
***** favorite album by pink floyd is piper at the gates of dawn. one of the most whimsically psychedelic albums i've ever heard. syd barrett was the heart of a child incarnate that became trapped in a nightmare of drugs and insanity....and pigpen's influence on the dead was nothing but great. it went beyond what he contributed himself (which was a lot in his own right) and extended out to the other members. his passing was a huge loss for the dead but they of course dealt with it in the best way possible like they always did whenever they lost a keyboardist.
cookq Sorry man, that's crazy talk. The Dead were a superb blues band with Pigpen. They morphed into a lot of wonderful things after Pig passed away, but they never did the blues as well again. Listen to any version of Big Boss Man and get back to me.....

Saw them way back before the Dead at The Cinnamon Tree dance hall in San Carlos Ca around 1965
Man, pigpen was so damn incredible and underappreciated. God bless you pig!!

Pigpen was never underappreciated. He is highly appreciated.
Underappreciated to who? To his band, peers, and fans he is very much appreciated.
He's adored. ☮️

Let us not forget the 30+min version at blackfoot pow wow add that they did that song for over 50min at that show in total.
Fillmore Bro I think there's better versions of the She got box-back nitties, great big noble thighs part.

Back in the day, I heard the Dead with Pigpen perform this live SF. The group just really nailed it!
The musical timing is phenomenal!!
ESPECIALLY those drums that DRUMMER had to be possessed....
This is one of the most epic things ever.
The final part is the best, shine on meeeeee, shine on meeeeee!!!!
@@sait69 Absolutely. The back-up vocal harmonies here are some of the best ever. Whoever pulled out the "mee-eeeee-eee" @ 5:45 is awesome.
Pigpen OWNS this song !
Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. The one, the only!

They have ended with love light twice here in NC. Pretty good actually...
Iwas there too. Jerry was offered some coke backstage and he said you sure there isn't any acid in this?
D&C just leaves me cold...

The one and only version; the one and only Pigpen.
I'm a lazy swine and I approve of Pigpen's version. 🐷
they opened this song at a 10, cranked it up to 15, and never let up.

gone 42 years today - RIP, Pigpen
Wondering if he's grateful that he's dead!
@@sparkyk5736 PROBABLY ESPECIALLY IF HE KNEW ABOUT THIS COVID-19!

Pigpen was fantastic. My favorite Dead song.

I'd love to see Pigpen & Brent belt out a blues tune together!

"Let's do in 15 minutes what anyone else can do in 5 minutes and we'll do it not as good." The message of the Grateful Dead.
+Johan Davenport OK music expert LOL
+Johan Davenport Ha! (not that I agree, I am easily amused)
+Johan Davenport sorry you don't understand. You are missing out on one the the greatest improvisational pop tunes every recorded.
+Rodney Rouse greatest tune ever my friend
