Magnificent. Stephen Foster could never have imagined the profound impact this song would have on America. Simply America's best and most proud traditions. Even if a mint Julep costs a grand.
I've watched every Kentucky Derby since being introduced to horse racing at age 7 by my father and still, even though I don't know why, I get tears in my eyes at the playing of "My Old Kentucky Home".
It is a song written long ago and just happened to have the right words put to the right music so as to become a tradition and a classic like an anthem or hymn. It From what I heard it is a song that tells about a "dying way of life" the ways or rural society. It tends to tug at the heartstrings to hear about people who feel that their happy home has changed as technology and changing ways takes over. It is the kind of song that can make me teary, but ultimately change has to happen and older ways of society and culture were not as carefree and happy as stated in songs.
Thank you for posting this. I was terribly upset yesterday when I could not get the race on tv. I am terribly homesick for KY. Watched that and got all misty eyed.
Only a Kentuckian would understand that! Non-Kentuckians, living in this state, don't understand. For me, it summarizes the Kentucky life. I am from the Nation of Kentucky!

Hello to Venezuela!! Another running of the Kentucky Derby tomorrow, the first Saturday in May. Don't know where all this time is going. But I Can't wait to watch after the NHL Playoffs! Enjoy! Cheers!
They let the drunks sing it ! ... It's supposed to be a solemn homage to home written by soldiers hundreds of miles from home ready to face death in combat during the civil war ... Get it right this year nbc, stick to the band, the flag, the roses and the horses during Old Kentucky Home. ABC nailed it spot on every year!
Nick Lachey and Joey Fatone, the ladies were Cyb and Patricia Barnstable, founders of the Barnstable Brown Foundation, it funds medical research, and holds a Gala every year on the evening of Derby Eve as a fundraiser, where a bunch of celebs and high rollers go and get shitfaced.
The singing of My Old Kentucky Home is my favorite part of the derby every year. I love it so much, I don't even care that the people who don't know it are butchering it, hahaha.
Same thing here, only replace it with "New York, New York" since I'm in NY and go to the Belmont every year. It really fills my heart with hometown pride, and probably does the same for you! It may drown out the professionals, but New York belongs to _all_ of us!
I’ve lived about half my life in Indiana and half in Kentucky even though I claim Indiana as my state and my basketball team I love this song and enjoy the state very much
Whenever I see this, it makes me sad to know that it might not be as big of a deal if the breeding and racing industry in Kentucky falls because Senator David Williams is too stubborn to budge on the whole gambling expansion idea. It deters lots of money from coming to Kentucky...he's bad for business.

When I was at the Derby in 2013 chills went up my spine when this song was sang.
+CubsFanJohn1 I think you mean: "... when this song was sung".

It's a shame Virginia doesn't have a state song anymore.

Is everybody ready for this year's Kentucky Derby?
Why are they singing it as a dirge?

I think it is awful when ordinary people are encourage to "sing along." The professional choir and band are there to be heard.
