Make sure that the hard drive you are using is USB 3.0 to format for Games & Apps. If you are getting issues where it does not prompt to format for Games. Then check the serial of the external hard drive to check if its USB 2.0 or 3.0. If it is 3.0 make sure that the drive is properly formatted. If it is USB 2.0 you can only use it for Media Storage.

My external drive is an IOMEGA 298gb hard drive that has been formatted to exfat. When plugged into my Xbox One S it gives me the option to view contents (has none) or store captures there. How do I change this to store games/apps?
S Beuerlein ok, a couple of questions first: is the drive usb3? If not you’re out of luck I’m afraid. Also, why are you going with such a small drive? I honestly wouldn’t use anything smaller than 500gb for games and apps and 1TB would be much better. As for the drive not working for games and apps, I suspect it’s the usb issue I mention above. Hope that helps.
my 2t hardrive is usb 3.0 but for some reason after i select format for games it just disappears? i cant figure it out i’ve watched so many youtube videos.
That's a weird one. I've not encountered that before. Have you tried a different usb cable and/or plugging the drive into a different usb socket? Dodgy cables can cause that kind of thing.

Im trying to sync my 360 info to cloud saves to update it through an Xbox one. Unfortunately its not reading my drive as xbox info, only as external media drive. Its an unfortunate circumstance at this current juncture
Sorry but I'm not entirely sure what you are doing here. You will need to sync 360 data from a 360. Are you trying to use a 360 drive with an Xbox One?
@@JoeChip yeah i was, i ended up buying a 360 and updating my flash drive info to cloud that way so i could use the more recent saves when playing my compatible games on xbox one. I havent had xbox live in a few years so my online information was a little out dated
This video was just the first one to pop up for my search, but its not exactly what I'm looking for. I need help trying to move DLC from my 360 to my xbox one, and I tried putting it on a hard drive and transferring it, but the xbox will only read music and shit. How do I transfer the data. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Caleb Marshall Not sure if you’ve already tried this or not but here goes: On the Xbox One 1) Go to Games and Apps 2) Navigate to the 360 game for which you have already purchased dlc 3) press the menu button on the controller 4) on the menu that pops up select “manage game and add-ons 5) Select “Ready to Install” from the left hand menu You should see a list of the dlc associated with the game. Choose the dlc you want to install. You can’t purchase dlc for 360 games from the Xbox One. You will either have to do it from a 360 or purchase the items from the Xbox store online. Hope that helps
When i go to storage and the drive. It doesnt say format for games. It says view contents and set as capture location but no format for games. Does that mean my drive isnt 3.0?? I bought it on amazon and it says it was 3.0
It may be that you need to format the drive on a PC first. I’ve not had that with a new drive, only those I’ve previously used elsewhere but it is possible. If you do need to reformat the drive, follow the instructions in the following video: ruclips.net/video/qhHpU-McFNs/видео.html
Iv a WD 1TB hard drive 2018 from a sky q box. How do i format this for xbox one s as my hard drive in the console is wearing badly. Is it the same processe as this video or do i have to get something else
Your problem is a bit different. If the drive inside your Xbox is dying you are going to have to replace it and that is a wholly different process to that described here. If you still want to use your old Sky Q drive, you’ll need to connect it to a PC and use disk management to reformat it before connecting it to the Xbox. This video shows what you would need to do: ruclips.net/video/qhHpU-McFNs/видео.html
I have a problem.. once it's formatted ... I can't bring back my media stuff?.. I accidentally switched it to store games and apps.. i didn't mean to.. now all my media have been erased.. is it possible to bring it back?
Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely that you can recover your data. You could try some recovery software but that can be very hit and miss, or you could pay a company to recover it for you, but even that’s not guaranteed to work. Sorry.
I know you would probably not see this because this is a 6 year old youtube video but when I press the menu button it shows only view contents and set as capture location and if you can help me that would be greatly appreciated
have you checked where the Xbox is actually capturing to? I sometimes get a message saying external capture has been disconnected but it still works perfectly.
I plugged an Adata SE730H 1TB SSD, when I click A it doesn't show me the same options as yours... I just get: -View Content -Set as capture location I clicked on Set as Capture location anyways, and it says the device is too slow (0x80bd003b)... I'm like WTF this is an SSD! I sacrificed the space and trippled the cost just for speed! I need help, 1- I don't have an option to format it. 2- it says the drive is too slow!!! Ho can I troubleshoot what's wrong? Thanks in advance
You're going to have to reformat the drive with a PC by the looks of it. As for the speed, I'm not sure what is going on there. What usb port do you have it plugged in to?
@@JoeChip I did format it using a PC it didn't help... However I found out what's wrong... See the ADATA SE730H SSD came with a USB C cable that has a type c connector at both ends, so I couldn't use it with my Xbox and I used another cable and faced the issue I mentioned up there, and changed the cable again with no avail. The cables were the culprit, the dropped the I/O speed from 540MB/s down to 45MB/s ! The had a USB C connector but had USB 2.0 speed. I went and bought a USB 3.1 Gen2 cable that supports speeds up to 10Gbps! And everything went smooth afterwards, I got the option to use it for games and apps and I did chose that, then I transferred all my favorite games to the SSD. 😊 I'm happy now 😁
Great video thanks helped me a lot but just wondering if I wanted to edit the videos on my pc would it still work like that if I started recording for 1 hour on the external drive and if I plugged it in to my computer will they be on there?
Videos won't be stored on a drive formatted for games and apps. You'd need to set the drive as your capture drive, which precludes it from being used for games and apps. If you do set an external drive up as your capture drive, then you can edit the captures on a PC, yes.
Yeah, it can. Still a bit flakey at present (for me at least) but it does work. Think it came with the creators update but I'm not sure about that. Of course, the creators update won't go live for people outside the Xbox Insiders Program for a while yet. Should be more stable by then.
Hymn, i will see if there once i turn my xb on. Checking suggests it was unstable last year. Does it play discs yet? PS - a new service xbox game pass out
TheKeithvidz Sorry, Keith, your comment wasn't flagged up, otherwise I would have responded sooner. I haven't checked to see if it plays disks. I'll have a look tomorrow and get back to you. I've actually just done a video about the new service. I'm pretty positive about it. Only 21 games in there at present as it's still in the testing stage but it's supposed to drop with 100 when it's officially launched. Good price too at £7.99/month or $9.99.
Literally the one guy that knows how to do it I spent 30-45 mins on Xbox support live and another 20 mins reformatting it on my computer, to watch 1 minute and 55 seconds of the answer I feel dumb now lol I was hitting the menu button the whole time

I bought a 2tb usb drive that’s 3.0 and but I don’t get the format for games and apps option on my Xbox and it keeps saying to capture game clips and screenshots externally storage most be 3.0 or faster this device is too slow
I don’t see that I used my storage device on my Xbox has 30+ games on it then I put it into my PS4 for some dumb reason when I put it back I got the media or games message I clicked media cause it said it saves everything now my storage device doesn’t appear any where not in settings when I plug it in Please help
Well, you have almost certainly lost your games etc from the drive. But no worries, you can download them again. The only issues you might encounter would be with saves and trophies (but if you have PS Plus, even saves and trophies should be ok). You’re going to need to reformat the hard drive on a PC, though. The following video should help with that: ruclips.net/video/qhHpU-McFNs/видео.html
You’ll need to reformat the HDD using a PC. It’s quite easy to do but make sure you back up any data on the drive first as formatting deletes everything on the drive.
okay this is helpful and all, but I’m struggling on how to get to the storage settings. when I plug in my external, it takes 5 minutes or more to show up on the home screen, then the option to open it disappears quickly, so I go try do it manually by pressing settings but all of a sudden it freezes. can someone please help me
Try using a different usb lead and/or a different port. If that fails you may need to reformat the drive on a PC. And if that fails you may have a faulty drive.
Side note I know have the one that works for the console because I already have games saved to my PS3 on here. Please help or I might have to buy a new memory card just for the this console.
The fact that you've used the drive with a PS3 previously will be your problem. You'll need to reformat the drive using a PC before you can use it to store games on the Xbox. Doing that will, of course, delete anything on the drive, so make sure it's backed up first. A quick question, though. You say memory card. Are you trying to use a usb stick for this? If you are it won't work. You need a usb hard drive. Hope that helps. If you need help formatting a drive on PC, I've made a video on how to do that, so just let me know and I'll point you towards it.
Joe Chip so do I have to format the drive every time I plug it into my PS3 if it’s already formatted for my Xbox? Also you say in the video that you use your external hard drive for your PS and Xbox games and apps which stores your memory on the games/apps that’s what I’m trying to do.
I had a question when I first got my terabyte device and then looked at how much storage was on it it said that 200 megabytes for being used off of a 1.7 terabyte storage does anyone know about this please help?!
This is most likely to do with the way sizes are calculated for hard drives. Basically 1.7TB sounds about right. It's a pain in the arse as drives never show up as having as much space as you would think but there isn't anything wrong with the drive. If you are interested, the following article sheds some light on this: www.howtogeek.com/123268/windows-hard-drive-wrong-capacity/
Hi joe chip. What it is i wanted to know is iv'e recently swaped ps4 to xbox one s & i've got an external hard drive i used for ps4 to store games. I want to reuse it for xbox so will i have to reformat it on pc to reuse it for xbox or will the xbox reformat it for me. B great 2 hear from u thnx 😀
Damian Bennett That's an interesting question. I've never tried to take a drive directly from PS4 to Xbox One. I suspect the Xbox won't recognise the drive as both systems use proprietary methods to format the drives. Personally, I'd just format it on PC first. It'll only take a couple of minutes. Hope that helps.
Damian Bennett No problem. It's not much more complicated than that, but there are a couple of steps you need to follow. I recorded a video a while back that should help, which I'll link to below. But if you have any issues I'll try to help if I can. ruclips.net/video/qhHpU-McFNs/видео.html
It's because the drive has to be formatted for games and apps and (in effect) becomes a system drive. This stops it from being used for captures. You'd need a second USB drive for captures.
Have you used the drive anywhere else, or is it new? If it has been used before, you may need to reformat it under windows as a simple partition. If it's new, you could try a different usb cable as that is sometimes the issue. Let me know how you get on.
If anyone could help me it would be immensely appreciated I go plug my hard drive in and it can only format for media but my hard drive is 2.0 and 3.0 is the fact that it’s also 2.0 why it’s only working for media?
So I only have a 128 gig usb and I just found out that it takes a minimum of 256 to be able to do this. I don’t get why because that’s more than the Xbox comes with stock. Does anyone know how to get around this?
The minimum size the Xbox comes with is 500GB. Anything less than that and it would be really struggling. Unless you are only going to be playing a very small number of games, I would say 256GB external hard drive is actually inadequate.
Greetings you! I was wondering how to I unformat my Western Digital 8tb external Hardrive on my Android Tv Box, so I can use all my 8tb instead of the 1.3tb storage which it sees, after formatting. I formatted my Hardrive only for portable usage (not format for "this device only") thinking it would still allow me to use my entire 8tb storage, but come to find out after formatting, it doesn't. I would like to unformat my hard drive, and place storage access back to Internal Storage, so I can have the full use of the 8tb storage. If you could please get back to me with some info, If you happen to know, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly! (Note: I do not need to restore/recover files. Only to regain usage of my new 8tb storage external hard drive)
You should be able to create a simple volume that uses the drives full capacity. This will have to be done on PC. You’ll need to know what formatting your box requires, though (FAT32 ExFAT etc). Also, it may be that your drive requires to have certain files on it in order to be functional but you’d know more about that than me.

@@JoeChip can you provide a link for that video please? i just got a new USB that i would like to use for my xbox one, thank you so much.
It doesnt say it for mine. Please someone help. I bought a 3.1 flashdrive usb C, but it doesn’t give me the option to format for games….
What type of drive can I use to transfer like DLC and games from 360 to series X. For example DLC from arkham origins
Does this work on the Xbox one s*
Is there a way to do the opposite. Set an ext. Hard drive to games. Want it for media and captures but don't have pc to format it
How do you do it just the other way around
my 2t hardrive is usb 3.0 but for some reason after i select format for games it just disappears? i cant figure it out i’ve watched so many youtube videos.
That's a weird one. I've not encountered that before. Have you tried a different usb cable and/or plugging the drive into a different usb socket? Dodgy cables can cause that kind of thing.
When I "click A" to change from Storage or Media to Game Storage, the option to change it to Game storage does not even show up. I'm using a Seagate USB 3.2 Gen 1 external Game Drive. Help lol
joe chip i want to add more videos and music to my external hard drive but i can't as it says its full and its not as its 3.2 tb free of 3.6 tb which only 12% is used..in other words i got plenty of room for alot of videos and music..if you can help that would be great..i also tried to format it but didn't get the option to have media and music
How is the drive currently formatted? Is it set up for games and apps?
games and apps yes
I clicked Format and now it says 0.0 and when I click view contents there's nothing
I have a memory stick with only 64gb and it doesn't work, does it need to have a certain amount of gb's to install games on it?
This video was just the first one to pop up for my search, but its not exactly what I'm looking for. I need help trying to move DLC from my 360 to my xbox one, and I tried putting it on a hard drive and transferring it, but the xbox will only read music and shit. How do I transfer the data. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Caleb Marshall Not sure if you’ve already tried this or not but here goes:
On the Xbox One
1) Go to Games and Apps
2) Navigate to the 360 game for which you have already purchased dlc
3) press the menu button on the controller
4) on the menu that pops up select “manage game and add-ons
5) Select “Ready to Install” from the left hand menu
You should see a list of the dlc associated with the game.
If you do need to reformat the drive, follow the instructions in the following video:
ruclips.net/video/qhHpU-McFNs/видео.html
Didn’t work to me i tried to format my hard drive and did everything also it’s 3.0 and still not working please tell me
Has the drive been used elsewhere (with a PC, for instance)?
Mate I have a 3.0 2TB USB FORMATTED TO NTFS and I don’t get the option for game storage just media help please
This video shows what you would need to do:
ruclips.net/video/qhHpU-McFNs/видео.html
@@JoeChip cheers mate
So my USB stick says its compatible for both 2.0 and 3.0. I've been trying to get it to work and won't let me switch from media to games and apps.
This won't work with a USB Stick, only USB hard drives.
Sorry.
Es que no me sale solo me sale capturas abajo y nada mas y view co tents????????????
I know you would probably not see this because this is a 6 year old youtube video but when I press the menu button it shows only view contents and set as capture location and if you can help me that would be greatly appreciated
I am trying to get mine to set as capture location and the I change it to the ntfs format and then when I put it back in I can’t see the usb drive.
Hannah Gaming and Vlogs. Were you using the drive for something else before reformatting? Also, did you reformat using disk management in windows?
My Xbox randomly stopped saying external in the capture location tab it only says internal for some reason.
have you checked where the Xbox is actually capturing to? I sometimes get a message saying external capture has been disconnected but it still works perfectly.
I plugged an Adata SE730H 1TB SSD, when I click A it doesn't show me the same options as yours... I just get:
-View Content
-Set as capture location
I clicked on Set as Capture location anyways, and it says the device is too slow (0x80bd003b)...
I'm like WTF this is an SSD! I sacrificed the space and trippled the cost just for speed!
I need help,
1- I don't have an option to format it.
😊 I'm happy now 😁
I hit format device at the end then it has been like 5 min and it hasn't showed back up(xbox one s)
It don’t show up in the storage devices
For me either, u figure it out?
In step 2 in my disk 1 it doesnt say Convert to GPT DISK but in disk 0 it does say i can covert it into a GPT disk i need help... please!!
Sorry but are you commenting on the correct video? This video is just showing how to set up an Xbox external drive to store games and apps.
Thanks dude I messed up with mine I named it then pressed cancel so thanking you for this guide u saved me a lot of money
Luke Pearcel We all mess up. I do it more than I care to admit. Glad I could help you out of a hole, though.
hey i really need help, i set mine for media by accident and i’m following the steps on this vid but ig the settings changed so idk what to do.
Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean. What exactly happens when you try to format for games and apps?
Great video thanks helped me a lot but just wondering if I wanted to edit the videos on my pc would it still work like that if I started recording for 1 hour on the external drive and if I plugged it in to my computer will they be on there?
Videos won't be stored on a drive formatted for games and apps. You'd need to set the drive as your capture drive, which precludes it from being used for games and apps. If you do set an external drive up as your capture drive, then you can edit the captures on a PC, yes.
Hi, is there any way to do the opposite? I mean from a game drive to media drive because I don't have access to it from my computer anymore...
Yes, you can use your PC to reformat the drive. I made a video about it:
ruclips.net/video/qhHpU-McFNs/видео.html
Let me know if it helps (or not).
they vlc now. Joe sounds like if you have the ext drive set as a media drive video, music etc can play on the xb?
Good price too at £7.99/month or $9.99.
i saw the thumbnail and will watch it
TheKeithvidz Cheers Keith.
Literally the one guy that knows how to do it I spent 30-45 mins on Xbox support live and another 20 mins reformatting it on my computer, to watch 1 minute and 55 seconds of the answer I feel dumb now lol I was hitting the menu button the whole time
LOL. Easily done. I still hit the menu button on occasion.
Marshallbassist You would need to use disk management on a PC and reformat it from there.
The following video shows you how:
ruclips.net/video/qhHpU-McFNs/видео.html
Marshallbassist No problem. Glad to help 👍
Dude i almost had a heart attack when it said it was media not game and apps. Thank you soo much
No problem. You are welcome 👍
Dood how because im having headaches i just wnan download sum games on it
I bought a 2tb usb drive that’s 3.0 and but I don’t get the format for games and apps option on my Xbox and it keeps saying to capture game clips and screenshots externally storage most be 3.0 or faster this device is too slow
What drive is it?
@@JoeChip I don't have that setting
Now say if I put games on this usb drive and then plugged it in on my pc would these games work for xenia
I accidentally clicked media and this video didn’t help. It doesn’t even pop up in the settings for it to work so I don’t understand.
What file system type do both of these options format the drive as? fat32? ntfs? special?
When the Xbox formats a drive so that you can play games from the drive, it uses a proprietry format. That means the drive only works on the Xbox.
That doesn’t show up for me when I click the A button it just says view contents and set as capture location
You may need to reformat on a PC first. It should work after that.
@@JoeChipcan u show me how to do that?
I don’t see that I used my storage device on my Xbox has 30+ games on it then I put it into my PS4 for some dumb reason when I put it back I got the media or games message I clicked media cause it said it saves everything now my storage device doesn’t appear any where not in settings when I plug it in
Please help
Well, you have almost certainly lost your games etc from the drive. But no worries, you can download them again. The only issues you might encounter would be with saves and trophies (but if you have PS Plus, even saves and trophies should be ok).
You’re going to need to reformat the hard drive on a PC, though. The following video should help with that:
ruclips.net/video/qhHpU-McFNs/видео.html
The problem with me is that I clicked media by mistake and once I did my hard drive didn’t get recognized anymore.
You’ll need to reformat the HDD using a PC. It’s quite easy to do but make sure you back up any data on the drive first as formatting deletes everything on the drive.
It works on certain hard disk only I have hard disk from many years old seagate not detected for games as well as new t5 ssd too ..
i don’t have this option it only has view contents and set as capture location
When you transfer the data to the hard drive in settings does it delete everything that was already on the drive?
Yes. Any time you format a hard drive, it deletes everything on it.
Help me when I click the USB external it only says view contents please help me
Please help joe chip
That's very odd. Have you previously used the drive on a PC? If you have, you may want to reformat the drive on PC first using disk management.
okay this is helpful and all, but I’m struggling on how to get to the storage settings. when I plug in my external, it takes 5 minutes or more to show up on the home screen, then the option to open it disappears quickly, so I go try do it manually by pressing settings but all of a sudden it freezes. can someone please help me
Try using a different usb lead and/or a different port. If that fails you may need to reformat the drive on a PC. And if that fails you may have a faulty drive.
i formatted the usb did the whole deal and i still cannot format this for games
It does not show format for games and apps help

My media drive option only pops up after I have unplugged the USB Hard Drive. How do I format what I can’t plug in?
If you are interested, the following article sheds some light on this:
www.howtogeek.com/123268/windows-hard-drive-wrong-capacity/
When I change mine from media to games and apps, nothing happens. No notifications and it’s not in my settings. It’s definitely a usb 3.0
So this format thingy deletes every single photo, music, documents, and videos from the external storage? (I meant the hard drive or usb)
Nigga Balboa Yes. Formatting on any platform will delete everything on the drive.
please help me. i just bought sandisk 500gbs and i plug it in and took me to media player
Joe Chip Ok thnx alot. To reformat it do i choose ex fat or fat 32 then press format or is more complicated than that thnx 😀
Joe Chip Ok thanx i'll give it a shot lol. 😀
New hard drive and it show me view contents and set as capture location what do i need to do?
Try changing the usb you are plugged into, then switch out the cable. If neither work try reformatting using a PC.
Hope that helps.
Plz help when I go on settings it doesn't have that second option of media storage and I'm not getting that notification at the start
D.LopezXx Has the hard drive been used before with another device, such as PC?
Hello 👋 so basically I can store all my games and apps onto my USB BUT, I can't do game captures? Do you know why?
It's because the drive has to be formatted for games and apps and (in effect) becomes a system drive. This stops it from being used for captures. You'd need a second USB drive for captures.
hey it doesn't come up with the option to format it on mine? is there anything else I can do?
Have you used the drive anywhere else, or is it new? If it has been used before, you may need to reformat it under windows as a simple partition. If it's new, you could try a different usb cable as that is sometimes the issue.
Let me know how you get on.
what do i do if my drive isnt even apearing in my storage area in the settings
I'm not getting a format option. How do I make the Xbox show the format option?
You may need to reformat the drive using a PC (that will delete everything on the drive). Have you previously used the drive with other hardware?
What about if I want to use for games and apps and bring this to my computer to storage some pics too, can I do that???
Unfortunately not. Once the drive is formatted for games and apps that’s all it can be used for.
