Mianyang City, referred to as "Mian", also known as Mianzhou and Fucheng, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Sichuan Province, a provincial sub-central city, a type II large city, and a third-tier city. It is located in the northwest of the Sichuan Basin, in the middle and upper reaches of the Fujiang River. It borders Guangyuan City and Nanchong City to the east, Suining City to the south, Deyang City to the west, and Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and Longnan City of Gansu Province to the northwest. It is between 30°42′-33°03′ north latitude and 103°45′-105°43′ east longitude, with a total area of 20,200 square kilometers. As of October 2022, Mianyang City has jurisdiction over 3 districts, 5 counties, 1 county-level city and the Sichuan Provincial Government Science City Office. As of the end of 2022, Mianyang City has a permanent population of 4.898 million.
Mianyang has a history of more than 2,200 years. It has always been the seat of prefectures and counties. It was later named "Mianyang" because the city is located in the south of Mianshan Mountain. The Bianduishan site within the territory has unearthed stone tools and pottery from the Neolithic Age 4,500 years ago; it is the birthplace of Li Bai, the poet, and Ouyang Xiu, one of the "Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties", the hometown of Leizu, the mother of silk, the concubine of the Yellow Emperor, and the founder of the Xia Dynasty. The birthplace of the founder Dayu. Known as the "Hometown of Fule and the Silicon Valley of the West", it is China's only science and technology city approved by the Party Central Committee and the State Council, an important national defense and military industry and scientific research and production base, the second largest economy in Sichuan and the central city of the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration. , has 18 national-level scientific research institutes such as China Academy of Engineering Physics, China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, and China Aviation Development Sichuan Gas Turbine Research Institute.
In 2023, Mianyang City's regional gross product (GDP) was 403.873 billion yuan, an increase of 8.0% over the previous year based on comparable prices. The added value of the primary industry was 39.319 billion yuan, an increase of 3.8% over the previous year; the added value of the secondary industry was 159.905 billion yuan, an increase of 7.7%; the added value of the tertiary industry was 204.649 billion yuan, an increase of 9.2%.
