Who got an enormous break on the 1st hole that the USGA later admitted was a mistake. Considering the way the playoff played out, that ruling cost Loren Roberts the title.
"24-year-old Ernie Els..." wow, time flies. Sidenote....the final round/playoff took place 3 days after the infamous OJ Simpson Bronco "chase"...........this was also the last men's U.S. Open for ABC sports after 29 years of coverage. It was Arnold's last U.S Open as well...

I remember watching this as a 16 year old on my gramma’s little black and white TV. Turning the rabbit ears every so often to see the picture. I swear, I willed Colin Montgomery to that playoff. I was so happy at the end of the final round.
I watched the final round of the ‘94 Open, as I have watched every US Open final round since 1972 (and attended several), but I didn’t remember the ruling on the 1st hole that Els benefitted from (it was actually a gift). When a member of the Executive Committee of golf’s governing body in the U.S. doesn’t know the rules well enough to make a competent ruling in their most important event of the year, then the entire credibility of the USGA is called into question. In a sport where character matters more than anything, Trey Holland didn’t have the character to answer questions from the media about his ruling after the round. It wasn’t a matter of whether the arm of the lift holding the camera could be retracted as he stated to Bob Rosberg, but it was simply a matter of rolling the body of the lift back away from Els’s line of sight. After all, what did he think the wheels on the lift were for and how did he think the lift got into the position it was in, as it was driven there or rolled there using the wheels for the purpose they were designed for. I understand Trey Holland may have been embarrassed or humiliated for the egregiously wrong and inept ruling he made, but he demonstrated a lack of character and cowardice by not answering questions after the round.
Fortunate for Ernie he got that ruling on hole one. You have to have a few good breaks go your way to win majors. Unfortunate for the USGA official who was so embarrassed he got it wrong he declined any press questions.
Can you feel my horrible hangover ? Lay in fairway it would spin!! Just real bad alky then ! Don't miss it at all!I was there with sister yelling in my face for being embarrassment! Not fun!
Irs same in all opens and same for everyone, was decided before it all started. The hissy fits by the commentary was frankly pathetic....should have known the rules before talking
This is the biggest one I’ve been waiting for. My favorite player winning his first major at my favorite US Open site.

Many thanks to the USGA for posting this Classic.
Our pleasure!
Please USGA remaster this audio, for the good of the game.
Great comment!

Oakmont looks so different with trees. Their tree removal project was insane. I personally love how it looks now without the trees.
Seems mad they ripped out the trees...looks so different now

I think between Freddie winning the '92 Masters and shortly after this event all of my golfing buddies went out and bought Lynx Parallax iron sets...😆
Yes we did!
Amazing how good Oakmont looks with...actual oak trees.
Terrible ruling on the 1st hole. Absolutely inexcusable

Audio feedback annoying.
Unusual heat wave in 1994. Even I can feel it through screen

In your early 20s? Lol
@United States Golf Association Please fix the double audio.
We will look into this, thank you for bringing it to our attention!
@@usga Thanks for the response!

Some these par 3's rediculous good shots not rewarded ! They skip over ! Thats bs! A discredit to Oakmont!
