  • Straight Rack and Pinion
Rack has a series of teeth cut parallel to each other along a straight blank. A rack is engaged with a pinion both having equal tooth pitch. They are used to convert rotary motion to linear motion and vice versa. The rack is connected to a linear actuator whose motion drives the pinion resulting rotary motion as output which is available in the pinion shaft. When the pinion is driven by a motor the rack moves in a linear manner and the output linear motion is available in the rack.
    Helical Rack and Pinion
If the rack has teeth inclined to some angle then it is called as helical rack and pinion. The angle at which the teeth is inclined is known as helix angle. The pinion will have opposite helix angle with respect to the rack but with equal tooth pitch.
