Thank you! @EVCustoms I was able to revive my Milwaukee 5.0ah 18v battery and make it functional again. Mine had the dreaded blinking first LED, and wouldn't accept a charge, so it was out of balance. I opened it up using the secure T10 torx and checked the modules, and the middle modules was around 3.15v while the outer ones were 4 volts. I connected my DIY variable PS (verifying the correct polarity), and set it to 8.4v @ 1a charging over night on the middle module, it started out charging 6v then it slowly increased to 8.4v then at the end of the charge, I checked it and was 4 volts. I held the button down for a few seconds then it went into a check mode where it blink several times at each level step. I then checked the overall voltage it was 20v. I plugged it into the Milwaukee charger and it went from red to green right away, then when I checked the battery LED status it was 4 bars! This revived my pack and saved me from having to buy another pack. 🤙🤜🤛🙌👍

Milwaukee introduced the M18 line in 2008, with shipments beginning in 2009. So that battery is at most 12 years old and likely much newer.

Right on Doug! They had the V28 in 2005, but for M18, you’re spot on. Just goes to show you, ya cant believe everything you see on the inter webs! Peace

Just recovered a 12ah pack by manually balancing with a charger and 5w 12v bulb to discharge.

The first li-ion tool batteries came out around 2004-2005. I think Bosch was one of the first, and they released in 2005. Ni-Cad didn't die out until 2015ish. There's no way this thing is from 2001

i dont think 121 is the datecode nor that the cell is 20 years old. Datasheets from this cells are from about 2010 and i have many old 15E cells from both SDI and SDIEM and all says 121 on the label. The battery bro app is good but not perfect. The datocode is more likely written on the cells and from my archive SDI cells are C2E4 J502 64971 and sdiem B5FR M3191 B4.

This is like some apocalypse shit. Finding that battery in the wasteland and being able to fix and use it to power up your first gen iPod you found!

Nice testing. Not 100% sure, but I think Milwaukee cuts-off the batteries at 15V (3V per cell); I will have to actually test this in practice with a tool to see.

  • @TheKingOfInappropriateComments

The M18 tools weren't born yet 20 years ago. We were still using NiCD back then.

Just opened mine. Corrosion on contacts with cells. Likely from humidity.

Hi, I got two old Razor 24V scooters for my kids. the batteries are dead but that's not a problem. I collect dead batteries from power tools. I would like to know if I can recover the Bms from the M18 batteries. Instead of throws, could you use Bms to make 12V batteries? I can't find any information about the maximum number of amperes that Milwaukee M18 bms can withstand. Thanks a lot

hello............Troubleshooting and repairing Milwaukee M18 Lithium battery: try to learn more about how to reset the management chip on the BMS, so that you can open the charging and discharge current for the BMS. Using EV 2300 kits and software from chip manufacturer Texas Intrumen

What did I miss? Old batteries that I work on need more than a charge and discharge. Did I miss a cell change?

He brought the low cell groups up to 4.1V to match the good cell groups. His charging equipment is not something I recognize, nor his method, since he appeared to charge 2 cell groups simultaneously. I use a power supply to charge the cell groups individually. Interesting that after a cell charge-discharge-charge cycle that the cells stayed balanced. That is the indication of a useable battery.

Dude, I hate to tell ya, but that’s a ‘Knock Off’ battery. A very good copy, but it is Not an OEM Milwaukee M18. And no way is that Date code right! M18 batteries were not launched until 2008/2009! Peace
