In this episode of the Sidcourse, we take a look at how players can still enjoy the incredible world of video games even when growing older.

Video games aren't an integral part of daily life, but as a form of entertainment, they're one of the most incredible mediums for storytelling, mechanical engagement and interactive technology. Growing Older comes with commitments, whether they come in the form of work, family or relationships, and as a hobby, enjoying games is no longer a priority.
However, purchasing and playing the biggest releases that require more time, effort and experiences that you be engaged regularly aren't the only types of games available.
We take a look at three types of games that require little commitment for time and are easily accessible. Episodic games from Telltale, Indie titles like Tacoma, Firewatch and Subsurface Circular. And of course, what we like to call the Arcade Nouveau; games with easy to understand gameplay loops that are hard to master.
Other recommendations include the episodically released Hitman (2016) from IO Interactive. A game that offered endless replay-ability, challenges, consistent updates to content, without the toxicity of multiplayer but consistently engaging.

Absolutely phenomenal. There's multiple points, such as Indie Story-based games being designed for people who may not want to spend $300+ on a platform to experience them, that I never considered. There's plenty of games I love that frustrated due to what you described, being gone for months and coming back to be lost. It's a problem that I'd say are the most similar to Novels, where you have to both write for someone completing it in one eight hour session on a Sunday, or a chapter per week. Being that I can't shut up about Black Lagoon, it actually does something pretty interesting. It's neither fully episodic, nor one overarching plot. It's got a series of arcs, that last 5 episodes at most. This allows viewers to feel the character growth and development, without needing to follow one long storyline that'll inevitably lead to a disappointing conclusion.

I totally agree. I do think games have spent way too long trying to be cinematic and "like film" when with the kind of length that games get into, even short games, they're better suited to writing arcs and stories the way television shows have done.
Thank you as always for the support on the channel, you are actually the best

"It's ok to not play the latest and greatest releases, they all still exist when you do have time."
I have been living by these words for the past 8 years now. I'm perfectly at peace with foregoing 2019 releases and playing games that I had purchased 3 years ago and getting around to them only now.

I can definitely empathize with you when you say that you don't have much time to play games anymore. Kinda comes with adulthood. But it also has made me appreciate shorter games with mechanics that encourage replayability. Long games are admittedly intimidating to me in my adulthood, so I'm happy that this issue is being put into perspective so well by you in this video.
Great work, Leo. Keep it up. :)

Lacking free time is definitely an issue I, and many others, have run into. If you go to a gaming forum, everyone complains about 6-10 hour campaigns but I'm here going "That's great! I can finish that."
Which is why I play Destiny. It has a lot of problems but I don't have to worry about forgetting where I was or anything like that. I login, shoot aliens and go to work.
    Another great video, Sid!

Core Ideas I've never understood how people can put 2000+ hours into the game where there is a lack of depth. But costuming the game in your context makes so much more sense.

I'm 20 years old and in uni. I don't have much time on my hands, so I play what I can. This summer I had a lot of free time, so I played trough all the Dragon Age and Mass Effect games. Now I will go back to Stardew valley, which is also a pretty good game for people who don't have much time.
You can play a day, which is around 10-15 minutes, then go do other stuff. It's very relaxing, has great music, a neat little story and hours upon hours of content.
I feel you on the Witcher. I want to play that game, but don't have the time right now. I might pick it up next summer.

"My own personal neurosis forces me to start again, and I'll be back at square one."
After about 35 hours played in Witcher 3, there was a section in a quest dungeon where I was forced to leave behind an insignificant amount of loot. Up to that point, I had looted and sold every single thing of importance I could find. I lasted about another 15 minutes in the game before I restarted and deleted that save because I had "screwed up".
    You're definitely not alone.

You might enjoy The Binding Of Isaac. You can ''finish'' the game in about 30 min, and be pretty satisfied. You can then move on if you want to, or start a new run to work towards additionnal challenges and unlocks that enriches the game, if you so desires. And every time you start over, the game is different, and always satisfying to play. I've seen people put 10 hours in and be satisfied, while other put 500 hours and still play to this day.

What a wonderful insight to stumble across two years later. The state of never being able to follow through on the demands of commitment from the current gaming market is something that's been haunting me as someone who greatly enjoyed playing games for so many hours of my early life. At this point, it's on my bucket list to finish another game I really, truly enjoy because it's been so long.. I can't help but suspect my attachment to gaming is sourced from the desire to find good in the time spent growing up, but I digress.
Your points and perspective were a breath of fresh air to me, and I appreciate the time and work you put into the things you do. Keep at it, one day at a time, and do your best knowing that that's enough.

I too have been playing games since the ATARI, Commodore 64, Doom, Cruzing USA, to name a few.
I recently bought an XBox One. So far I have played Skyrim, Doom, Fallout 4, Witcher Hunt 3, Need for Speed, Flatout, Uno, Sims 4, Trivial Pursuit. I am not albe to work so I can spend more time playing I think playing Open World games helps keep our minds active especially helps hand /eye coordination. Also helps with memory. My favourite game Witcher 3.. I tend to agree with what you have posted. I love good story lines or just wander around. So I am 57 and loving be apart of watching the Game industry grow. Also my grandson loves wiping me out lol

I just wanna say that as someone who's struggling with trying to be a musician and also play videogames, have a job and be a better person, your perspective is a beautiful way to be able to enjoy gaming that i hadnt really considered. I always liked long jrpgs with weird complex mechanics, so i have been strugling with wanting to play them and not finding the time, so much that lately i ended up just playing with friends overwatch and rocket league, with regrets in the back of my mind about not having my 100+ hour long epic adventures. But now i understand why im not playing them, they just arent meant for me anymore. So thank you for making me realize that i can still enjoy gaming if i just center my attention in the shorter games that fit my time, because i always think about stopping gaming altogether and i think that this is a better compromise solution.

    I love this video...
Im a high schooler that is about to graduate and go to college and there is one sentence that has been creeping in my life recently "you won't have time for gaming". As a life long gamer this scares me, gaming has been part of my life since I can remember and now that Im about to enter the world of responsibilities I don't see myself having time for the thing that I love. This video talks to me, saying that its ok to reduce your consumption of your hobby. Im happy I saw this, it gave me the answer that I needed.

Some of my favourite games are ones that are inherently versatile. You get 10-30 hours of story, in a form that can be completed over anywhere between a fortnight and a long weekend, and then a seemingly endless sandbox, challenge, or scenario mode with some form of career and levelling progression to it.
Injustice 2 would be one of my favourite examples - the story is intriguing, the acting is amazing and the production design is astounding, but you can complete the campaign over about 2-3 days, if you play it all in one go. Or, you can choose to take on each "chapter" of about 3-5 levels following the same group of characters one at a time - each chapter going for about 40 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how well you do in each fight.
After the campaign there's an infinitely deep progression and gear upgrading system that you can experience through different online or challenge-based missions, upgrading your characters, customising your gear, and taking on different chains of missions that could fill either a whole day, or a couple hours of gameplay, depending on what you want to play.
You can also engage in guild-based combat or versus rounds with friends online, or even just connect another controller for some couch versus.
It's one of my favourite ever games :)

You've no idea how much this video helped me to calm down. I suffer from anxiety everyday because of this matter. I feel like I always have a backlog and it causes me to go crazy seeing how it just keeps growing and growing instead of decreasing. I need to learn how to accept that I'm no longer a kid and and that I don't have the time to play everything I want to, I have to let go of that.
Anyway, in the meantime, this helps a lot man. For real, thank you.

What you said about the Witcher 3 is how I’ve been with pillars of eternity. There’s so much reading, and takes true commitment to understand the story you can’t just stop playing and pick it up later or you’ll forget details. The game play can be very taxing when you’re just trying to relax for a few hours. Feels really bad. Back when I had much more time, crpgs were something I loved with immense passion.

  • @Desi-qw9fc
    @Desi-qw9fc 5 лет назад +1

I think it’s not just time commitments that change with age, it’s also mental space. I’m doing a PhD and I’m mentally exhausted pretty much all the time, and this is a huge barrier to me playing strategy games, puzzle games, or games that are inherently stressful. For example, I bought Aven Colony recently (a city builder) and I had a hard time mustering up the energy to learn all the buildings and what they did and how they interact. I kickstarted Pathologic 2 and I would love to play it now that it’s released, but the core experience of P2 is that it should be nearly unbearably stressful and I have enough stress in my life right now.

I am right there with you in the same boat. At the moment I : work full time in an office, keep up with my family, keep up with my wife's family, manage a rental space, sing and write music in a band, run tabletop RPG campaigns, and somehow try to keep up with my other hobbies such as anime and video games. All of this to say that of course I can't. Aside from the obvious adult obligations that I'm pretty much stuck with I'm also trying desperately hard to keep up with the social side of things with friends.
It's easy to see how games that have a 4 hour play-time could get people's gander. The last "big" game I could say I played was Metal Gear Solid V and even then it was in small spurts as much as I could over maybe 4 weeks. This is a stark contrast to the straight 24 hour marathon of Metal Gear Solid 4 that I played when it came out. It has really gone to show me how much time I don't have. I sometimes stop and wonder if what I'm doing is really what I want, or if I would be happier if I could play the big games that came out in 2017 I've heard so much about. Or maybe I should play mobile games more? Get a DS and just play what can be offered to me there? But even trying that course I didn't even have time to beat Pokemon Moon.
I'll probably never get to play anything bigger than Mario Odyssey again. Not unless of course, I'm retired. I'll probably never get to play Wolfenstein : The New Colossus. It just, realistically, will never happen. But at the end of the day I have to remember the games I did get to enjoy. I got to play Resident Evil 4 to my hearts content. I got to experience Metal Gear Solid 3 as much as I wanted. I even got to play some more niche games on the first Xbox and PS2. No matter what comes out, I still have to be confident in myself that I enjoy spending time creating rather than consuming. That's the only comfort I can find.

It's strange, I've watched this video three times over the last few months since starting my first full time job and it's crazy just how many approaches I've been experimenting with to viably maintain the hobby. I've been trying shorter story focused games from the Indie scene but the amount I'm going through on weekends is causing a massive flood of information that's doing more harm than good. I'm currently thinking about picking up some more open ended games such as your Stardew Valleys and Slay the Spires that can be dropped in and out of without the worry of "If I don't finish this game tonight I won't be playing it again for week!".
Definitely a video that's given me plenty to think about in recent weeks.

  • @BrickBreakerXX

I feel this so much. I used to play games a lot between the ages of 13-17 and it was so much fun playing games like Pokemon, Smash Bros, Borderlands 2, Rayman Origins, etc, etc. But now I'm 19 and whilst that may sounds really young I'm currently in a very demanding course that requires extensive time and consistently high grades (we're talking A- level and above, and even A- may not be enough). I have moved onto other mediums such as films, tv shows and books purely for the reason that I feel like my time is better spent there. If I read an hour of a book or movie I'm making significant progress through that content, but an hour in a game flies by like nothing else and I don't dare to play a single game for more than 30 hours anymore barring replays where I just play it for comfort.
I constantly feel like I'm missing out on my old passion, I now have money to play these games but so little time to dedicate to those experiences like I want to, especially how I have other things I want to do with my time as well like draw, play guitar, play tennis, do martial arts, you get it. I've just decided that it was time to move on from gaming for the most part, if I have a spare few hours I may boot up a game but considering everything else I just feel like my time is better spent elsewhere.

OMG i related to every single one of your points, despite being relatively young compared to most of you(i assume) i rarely have time juggling school, my social life, my several hobbies and unfortunately a few emotional issues. These tips and techniques for getting your times worth are also very good, but one you didn't mention that i find to be the "best" so to speak is emulating retro or/ ps1-ps2 era video games because they all usually display the qualities you mentioned in the video, for example they aren't too easy, game time usually varies from 10-20 hours and with all the collectibles and bonus content in classics like ratchet and clank, jak and daxter and crash bandicoot, etc. i suggest trying it out for yourself, it works very well.
also i have insomnia and you voice is the most soothing crisp thing, it gets me sleep when i need sleep 11/10

Really loved this video. Until a few years ago I was training as a dancer, working full time and still trying to have a social life. Had to stop dancing but still noticed that even without the two hours every evening of dancing I still have other things I like to do like tv and talking to my friends. So most of my gaming list is smaller games with occasionally one game over 30 hours every fifth game.

This is a great video, I've been thinking about a lot of these things I've been thinking about lately. I'm really glad I found this channel. However, one thing I don't think will change s how often we get episodes. Releasing episode once a week would break the wallet of most fans. Giving some time between releases lets people save for new episodes. Probably, for people who can only buy one game a month, having them coming two months apart doesn't only alow them to recover, but also lets them not feel captive of this one game that will take at least half a year to have whole.

Great video. I have been feeling the same struggles with finding time to enjoy video games. Especially with games like The Witcher 3, which my friends constantly tell me I should play. There are so many games that I think I would really love that are on my Steam library just waiting, but I can never make the time commitment to get into them.
I can't stand seeing all the amazing-looking new games come out and then see that the average time to actually play through it is 80+ hours. Definitely knocks it down a few pegs for me. I used to love that stuff though. It also feels like a lot of the newer releases have padded content that isn't as enjoyable, just to boost that playtime up.

Another option, that you touched briefly is portable gaming, Switch included. And even smartphone gaming. The games there especially since the Nintendo DS, have been especially designed to conform to the necessity of byte-size entertainment. If time runs out on you, and you are at the middle of something, you can always suspend the session. In everything, be it a small arcade style or a big expansive game. Of course on single player.
I've changed recently to focus on portable gaming, with this being part of the reason.
Also you seem to have a very varied set of occupations. You could let some go, in order to enjoy more time with and focus on others.

I dont know how much you care about random peoples opinions online, but i just want to let you know that i think youre a great man. You seem to seek out understanding and relaxation and you dont go around spreading hatred. I really like to play with your kind of person because its so relaxing, and i always try to defend people who are playing for fun whenever some hardcore yelling dude comes around.

For me, this exact niche has always been best filled by puzzle games, but recently, I've (re-)discovered Trackmania, and it seems to satisfy all of the criteria: Every single level is usually no more than a minute long, it's single player but still has you interacting with a community, the core mechanics have remained unchanged for essentially a decade, and the skill cap is incredibly high.

Amazing video, and incredibly relatable. I can't wait to have time for the Witcher series. I know you mentioned the souls series as a part of the "other types" of games, but I recently got my hand on DS:Remastered and I'm loving it for the exact reasons you say you loved breath of the wild (and why I bet it is going to be an amazing hit on the switch) every little thing you do makes some difference. Farming run for 10 minutes? Items to upgrade your stuff and move onto a new zone next time you can. Push into a new zone but can't get very far? The game saves every inch of progress and let's you pick right back up. And for those rare and glorious days I am able to play for more than 20 minutes, you can binge a full 3 hours and not even realize it. Seriously though, fantastic video thanks for voicing the struggles of the modern adult gamer. One of the many hobbies that time and passion can end up conflicting rather intensely :/

This was amazing, very spot on. Love, love, love gaming but as you say I lack time to commit to them more. There's just so much in a day I need and want to do. I'm a type of person that's satisfied while completing a quest. I'm a big fan of Skyrim and play it whenever I can. I get so immersed in it I don't normally forget what I was doing and what I'm supposed to do. I tend to log in, pick a quest, complete it and spend some time role playing. :)

Add having a one-year-old baby to the mix.
I only play roguelikes on a laptop nowadays (if I manage to gather enough mental energy to play a game at all).
I would recommend Caves of Qud. A roguelike that should run on everything, isn't expensive, could be played in short sessions, has incredible writing and a unique universe. It's a turn based RPG, so stopping in the middle of a session to take care of something urgent is not an issue.
The one downfall is that it may take a few minutes to memorize the keyboard shortcuts, but I heard that you could play the game with a gamepad nowadays.

This is an internal conflict I've been struggling with for years now and you've described it so well.
I've always loved games, but now playing them makes me feel guilty since I'm neglecting my other hobbies or obligations to play a game, which can be cathartic and fun, but also a huge time-suck especially given the few hours I have in a day.

I feel like there's a gap there between 2 hour walking simulator and 400 hour epic that was unfilled in this video. There are many games that are 6-10 hours long that can be played over a week like an Episodic Game, while providing both gameplay depth and an engaging story. You don't have to choose between gameplayless walking sims and storyless arcade games.

    • @LeonardoDaSidci
      @LeonardoDaSidci  7 лет назад +3

I find that the 6-10 hour game is really good, however they're the kind of games that don't always have the natural break in the game the way an episodic game does. Episodic games have an expected length of time per episode and everything fits into a structure that the player can grasp and understand. Whereas the single-player 10 hour game could be played in the same way, they're treated more like really long films, rather than episodes with beginnings, middles and ends in with each session.

Absolutely my vibe. I really want to play The Witcher games, but I just do not have the time to get as much out of it as I want. I can justify a 40-hour game, spread over a few weeks. But anything into triple figures and I just know I'll have to rush it and have a shallow experience, or miss out entirely. I largely concentrate on games pre-2010 (usually a lot older) as this tends to give me a deep experience in my sweet spot of the the 8-20 hour range.

I think the other big issue with games like the Witcher is not only the time requirements, but the fact that you really won't know what the value of that time is until you complete it. Now, all games have this to some extent, but that means the risk is higher for churn in a game that expects that wait time to be 4-8 hours to get that answer vs. 5 mins to an hour. I think this is why those Arcade Neuvo can be so compelling. That said, I think we can do that in longer games and as you've pointed out with games like BoTW, it can be done. Part of me wonders if it's also the console we play on. Maybe more mobile games can do this better as it allows us to fit them in around our availability rather than having to schedule our lives around them.

Recently I've been looking into why I like games and what type of games are satisfying to me and I have to say your outline of the Switch made me realize why I've come to adore the switch. BOTW was much more engaging for me since it allowed me to progress whenever I wanted and for as long as I wished. I no longer had to play a whole level but I could set micro goals on each game session which overall lead to the whole game experience becoming an enjoyment.

In childhood I had written down playing all the games in the world as one of my purposes of life. Growing up i built the same concerns as you.
It hurt knowing i can't do that and awesome games (my entertainment) will be available rhe day i die as well. This is so depressing if i believed that would be the end of me and my entertainment.
I know there is after life and the entertainment there is of best kind. I hope to invest my time in things that will allow me the eternal entertainment.

My god dude I totally have the same thing with Witcher! I've had that game sitting on my hard drive for over a year and I just cannot bring myself to play it because I don't want to start it and then have to stop, come back, and have to remember where the fuck I am! I feel like what those larger games need is shorter, concise loops of gameplay that make a large game rather than a one or few gameplay loops or stories that take FOREVER TO RUN. Maybe a model closer to seasonal television, where their is an overarching plot but each episode is self contained, and catching players up is easier and more engaging than they currently are which tends to require you to not only look up where you were but having to remember where that recap is.

As a studying student in electrical engineering I see my free time diminish little by little. I have an oke steam library filled with some good story games. But like you I ran into the problem of not enough free time and unfortunately I've already bought the witcher 1,2,3 and started over 6 times. This is how I usually stop playing and start trying to find another game for e.g. I finished uncharted 1,2,3,4 and I love those games. Why you may ask? The singe player isn't that long and the overarching story is easy to comprehend and stick to and there are not a lot of mechanics. I can really line myself up with the comments and statements you made in this video and I thank you for that sir. (English is not my native language, my apologies in advance if its not correct)

It took me 8 months to play through the Witcher 3, played as little as 10 min a day , most of the time between 15 - 45min and as much as 3h on a few weekends. Steady but slow is how I did it. It's doable even with a girlfriend and job, but in the end it's still a very long game.
Hollow Knight on the other hand is a game where you can get in for 15 to 30 min every other day and get meaningful progress, it's mechanically challenging, simple but very tight control scheme, incredible handdrawn artstyle and not overly long. Highly recommended because it works well when played in short bursts.

I like your video and I think I'm around the same age so I can relate to a lot of what you said and agree with much of it. My advice to you and anyone, if you want it, is go back to play older games you love and try and play them not how you used to play them, but how you want to play them right now. For example, I'm playing through Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and played some older racing games like Midnight Club 3 and I'm playing them better. I completed Midnight Club 3 and I never could when I was younger, I just wasn't good enough, I completed it recently and it felt wicked. And with Splinter Cell, I'm doing better because I generally think a lot more and better, I don't kill anybody at all, an absolute pacifist, the score at the end shot right up and it genuinely feels better at the end of the level, it's weird but an awesome feeling, very rewarding feeling.
Indie games are great too but the story driven sort with a lot of depth and not repetitive generic multiplayer. It's kind of sad though, the way a lot of game franchises have sold out, quite literally because they want to appeal to the mass audience. They've become a sort of double edged sword, in one way they get a lot more sales so do financially well but they alienate a lot of the older fans because there's very little substance there anymore, there's no magic and that's fuckin' awful to me, I doubt I'm the only one who feels this.

I love it when games respect your time, and have become increasingly intolerant of ones that don't (many jrpgs for example, which I've historically loved). I've put almost 300 hours into Zelda at this point, but not because I felt I had to in order to enjoy what the game had to offer. I could have done as much or as little as I wanted, and every aspect is high quality, unlike the countless grinding of Xenoblade Chronicles or the excessive padding of many Final Fantasy games, (especially when you primarily want to enjoy the story).
Celeste is another game that delivers a powerful story, fun, challenging and masterable gameplay, and an incredible number of ways you can choose to enjoy the story, whether you want to go through the main story, speedrun, collect everything, or a combination of these.

I am an avid TF2 player (I have over 1200 hours in it for god's sake) and basically every team based shooter that's somewhat popular (Overwatch, Rainbow, Counter Strike on occasion) and they remain one of the best ways to waste time no matter how much time you can invest personally, and I love that. Even with the amount of hours I've logged into tf2, I still haven't mastered anything. I'm still only decent at rocket jumping, sub par at sniping, a god awful spy, and still can't aim at all, and yet I still enjoy it over any other game I've ever played and I don't ever see myself quitting permanently until games become overly difficult to find. I dunno why I wrote this, but whatever. Not everything has to have a point in the end I guess.

When i was younger i had all the time in the world. I've always loved games. But never had any way of playing them. I remember pirating games that didnt even ran properly on my decade old ass computer. Games are really expensive in my country. I had no money and my parents didnt value games at all.
Now, i've finally bought a good PC and have plenty of games on Steam, but i have no time to play them. And i feel that i'll never have. And thats so frustrating.
Thanks for this video. It really hit close to home.
