    To be fair, I think Marner is hoping for another team to sign him to a higher $$, via offer sheet, and no one is doing it. The other thing to consider is that maybe he doesn't think the Tavares signing was beneficial to the team, defensively, and that the team will never have a window to win because they have badly mismanaged contracts, under Dubas. Kerfoot and Ceci still need deals which means that Marner's contract falls around a really low number, if you sign them to 1yr/$1M deals. And if you do that...all of your d-corps comes up for RFA/UFA, except for Morgan Reilly. And the salary cap is probably not going to up enough to sign all of them. Stats-wise....Marner had 94 pts in his 3rd year after 61-69 in his previous seasons. Marner is the best player for Toronto and Matthew's contract was a massive detriment to Dubas.

    Leafs made this problem for themselves by bending to Nylander, then giving Matthews exactly what he wanted. If Matthews took 10.5, then Marner would be happier to take less I'd bet. The way I see it is that the first 2 guys got what they want so why should mitch not get what he wants. I feel like some team will come in and offer sheet 10.5 mil for 5 years and Toronto will match and this will be over with. When you convince a star to take less, your other stars will likely follow suit, but when you give everyone what they want (including Tavares) nobody will take anything less than what they want. And it's not like its crazy if Marner wants the same deal as Matthews. He has been their most consistent player over the last 2 years and the bread man just got 11.6 so you can't say a winger wouldn't get paid that much.

Idk what it is about the leafs players but they seem to not budge at all Karlsson and meier are both getting like 6mil (ya tax and what not but still). whether it's 8.5 to 12.5 times number of years you know that the signing bonus % is the prevailing factor, to deal with issues like escrow, etc. Matthews 94% Tavares 92%, guys like Panarin/Aho 91%, McDavid 86% O'Reilly 87%. u think it's a $ x # of years.

    I'm just thankful Pasta got signed last yr at 6.6 mil a yr. Don't have to worry about him for another 5 yrs. I'd be kinda pissed off to being a leafs fans and Marner not taking 10 mil a yr. If he was on any other team he'd be making tops 8 or 9.

    I find it hard to believe that Marner believes he deserves the same as Matthews. Sounds like Ferris and his daddy are way too involved and they need to back off. Hopefully Marner tells him that. The guy had one super impressive 94 point season but the previous 2 years were 61 and 69 points respectively. The guy benefited greatly from the addition of all star Centermen Tavares ... It's no coincidence his point total, particularly his assists went up so much. He is a great player that's for sure...fast, hard working on the ice, and clearly skilled. But he's also a winger, not a center. He's asking for center money...after one spectacular statistical season not 3. He doesn't deserve 11 plus mill a year that's for sure. Honestly 10 M a season would still be slightly over paid. The guy should be signing at 9 or 9.5 ideally over 6-8 years but I'd be ok with 4. If Dubas messes this signing up like he did with Nylander so far then he's going to completely get taken for rides every time contracts come up. I do think that Nylander contract was a fluke and I do think there's a chance he could pan out this season but damn if he over pays for Marner he's gonna handicap himself more than he already has. If the Marner camp does drag this out and goes close to the season. I would trade him. Fuck it. Trade him for a bunch of first rounders or an equally talented player or a big time D man. Dubas can't back down and needs to reset the tone for his tenure.

      You're right he needs to trade him for a good dman or any other assets. There is a slim chance he becomes top 5 in the league even though he will be paid like a top 5.
      Also the Nylander contract will look so good in coming years, Nylander is an amazing player and will no doubt eclipse 61 points a season.

  • @michaelfusmusic9447
    @michaelfusmusic9447 5 лет назад

    Marner’s most comparable free agent in this off-season is Panarin. To me, they are on the same level in terms of skill, ability and influence on the ice. So there’s no reason why Marner should not get 11.5 million dollars with the way the market is inflated today. The issue is not that the Leafs don’t want to pay him what he’s worth, it’s that they don’t have enough cap space to give it to him. This is a mistake from the Leafs to not pursue him more aggressively the year before and on Mitch’s father for all his negative comments towards the organization.

    • @gordonbgraham
      @gordonbgraham 5 лет назад

      Panarin was a UFA, can't compare an RFA to a UFA, because UFAs go to the highest bidder. No one is bidding for RFAs, so they have no leverage. Not a good comparison contract-wise

    It's obvious that Marner wants 4 or 5 years but Dubas is offering 6+ years. It's not about value, it's about term. My problem is these young RFA's want $8+million for 4 or 5 years and they think they can make more as UFA's at the end of these 5 year contracts. What do they want $13million? Do they think they should get more than McDavid? No. That's what is causing problems is these teams don't want to have to put all their cap space into 2 players 5 years from now.

    They should have let Nylander sit for a year and the Leafs wouldn't have this dilemma. Saying that, Marner should be offered no more than
    $9 million or have him sit the year. Now that the Leafs have rid themselves of Kadri, I don't like the way this team is shaping up. Matthews, Tavares, Kapanen, Anderson and Nylander are all going to have to have career years to make the playoffs and then Matthews, Nylander and Kapanen will need to maintain that standard of play for the 5 years after that. As for Marner, take a 5 year deal at 9 per with a large upfront bonus in the $20 million range and get back to playing hockey looking forward to another future real big payday with a couple of Stanley Cups under your belt! Play hockey ... be happy .... forget all the crap!

    • @MrRaziza
      @MrRaziza 5 лет назад +1

      Sam Santucci I’m no Leafs fan by any stretch of the imagination, but saying that they need to ALL have career years to make the playoffs? What kind of take is that? The Leafs have one of the most offensively sound teams in the league. The issue has been defence and grit that made it very difficult for all that offensive skill to push through against certain teams/in the playoffs. If they can actually manage to stop more pucks from going into their net so they don’t have to constantly outscore the other team to win, they could have LESS offence and be fine.

      Already bolstered their defence with Barrie and Ceci. Traded Kadri for Kerfoot for 1 million less a season. Signed up 2 of their up an coming stars in Johnsson and Kapanen.
      They literally traded away all the guys that most fans wanted them to get rid of. Marleau, Hainsey, Brown and Zaitsev.
      They have made some good moves in the off season.

    Most Teams would be willing to pay Marner 11M hes a franchise player hes going to continue to get better and impress more and more each year. The leafs offered him 11 for 8 years he said no because he didn't want the 8 year term. But how can you blame him the salary cap is going to continue to rise and Matthew's is gunna get his chance to make maybe 14 or more in 5 years. Marner wants that opportunity too. But after 8 years hel be 30 hes not getting a 13 or 14 million dollar contract for 8 years at that age maybe 3 to 5 years max where Matthew's is going to get his long term deal with big money, 11 seems like a lot now but we need to remember McDavid makes 12.5 another team offered Tavares 13. Nylander makes 7 but someday he might cash in on 10. It's hard because no Marner is not a Centre and no hes not the teams goal scorer but how is that really fair? All of Mariners team mates would of scored less without getting any minutes with marner. The league has not seen magic hands like marner. Sure you need the goal scorer. But Matthew's wouldn't of looked as good without marner on the power play. Hes a key player like it or not and is just as important as our top 2 centers. I mean come on the 11 best point getter in the league at 21 years old. And only gunna rise from there. Led the team in points 2 consecutive seasons. I can see marner excepting anything over 10.5 for any less than 5 years. Or over 11 for anything more then 6. Matthew's and Nylander really didn't take a deal why should marner? The other problem to is when people compare him to other wingers or even centers around the league. Toronto is the highest taxed city to play in in the league so that's not really fair either. Kucherovs 9.5 hel see roughly 8 million of it in toronto hed see less then 6. The league salary cap should be based on what the team pays the players after taxes. That would fix that problem
