I'm not a basher but I think that there was a huge disconnect when the producers decided to use Jennifer's voice instead of Aretha's. Audiences agreed apparently as the movie underperformed. Jennifer is one of the most amazing young vocalists around (there is no denying that) but Aretha's story can only be told through her legendary voice... I don't understand why they had Jennifer change her unique tone and style to create a hybrid imitation of the Queen of Soul. Just imagine if Ariana Grande is chosen to play Mariah in her biopic and they used Ariana's voice instead of Mariah for the soundtrack... there would be riots.
@@SquidProQuo80 I don’t think Jennifer’s vocals are the reason the movie could have underperformed. I also don’t know if you’re talking about them just copying and pasting Aretha’s vocals and having Jhud lip sync all the songs, because, that would have been a waste of Jennifer’s talents and I can assure you that would have had terrible responses from both Jennifer and Aretha fans. I’m sure Aretha herself would have wanted Jennifer to sing with her own voice
@@recemitchell9163 Exactly that would've been very disrespectful for Aretha to tell Jennifer she has to lip sync when she knows Jennifer is the whole package it doesn't make sense to lip sync when she sounds just like Aretha that's why Aretha aloud her to be herself. Aretha asked for the whole package and Jennifer Hudson is the whole package. P.s. Respect movie did pretty good at the box office but it just didn't do as good as they though money-wise because of the pandemic that's what screwed up everything in my opinion.

Respect suffers a bit from typical biopic scenes and compression of time, but no matter as Hudson is everything. Her ability to sing act is unparalleled and she is magnetic, believable, and vulnerable. The last five minutes of the film, when she sings Amazing Grace as Aretha is spellbinding. I could watch Jennifer Hudson singing on screen all day, and I would have goosebumps the entire time.

I totally get the voice-match, but it's missing the essence of Aretha. Aretha voice came from a place of f pain, conviction and a whole range of other deep emotions. J-Hud for me is just a good performance. Unpopular opinion, but mine.
I am not disputing J-Hud's life experiences that involve pain, I just don't think that she had them in mind as she sang. I am saying, her pain does not feel relevant to what she is singing. What I hear in her voice is the need to pay deepest resprct and homage to Aretha, which is the true intent; hence, my saying it is a good performance. However, personally, the fact that with Aretha, I've always heard her life essence in her songs, this create marked distinction between the voices for me.

@blksung Her vibrato is slow, and her timing when its time to give them big notes were just totally missing in action also her tone is just wobbly as hell. Also, she lacked the agility Aretha had too.
Aretha's version is just way better in the musicality department.
@blksung She said she was channeling Aretha by using the headier mix approach. Which is NOT how she sings regularly. Her timing is just off to me, probably cause her voice is just naturally slow. My ears hear it, yours don't. Goodbye
